I think we should install debian on cynic, for the following reasons:
* Solaris is shit. * Debian has apt. * Solaris is shit. * Debian is easy to keep up to date. * Solaris is shit. * With deathray and cynic running basically the same services and operating system it'll make life MUCH easier. * Also, solaris is shit.
At the moment, the only thing running on cynic is bind, which isn't a big job to move. Obviously, this is a decision we need to make before we invest any time in cynic, and it gets harder to move it.

Wasn't there also a plan to turn it into a development server to give users the benifit of of a sun4u platform as well as a sun4v? It was mentioned. I don't believe there's enough demand (or any) to justify the extra work involved in this.
And didn't we decide that Linus on Sparc was bad because no one uses it?
No, no one uses linux on T2000s, cynic will be supported just fine (imo).
And sun are more likly to give us stuff if we run solaris on sun hardware...
Great, then there'll me *more* machines we have to run solaris on. Personally, unless sun are offering a thumper or other storage device I don't want any more sun hardware, I don't think we need it. a. -- Andrew Harford System Administrator, DCU Networking Society Ordinary Member, Societies & Publications Committee My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. They're pretty much the same as far as development is concerned, bar the need for threading on Sun4v.
And didn't we decide that Linus on Sparc was bad because no one uses it?
That's almost entirely a Sun_4v issue.
And sun are more likly to give us stuff if we run solaris on sun hardware... They don't seem to be very likely to do that anyway. And I doubt they know/care about a 280R

The debian disk is in cynic - if someone wants to move bind I'll try install it and we'll see how it goes. We still have all the jumpstart stuff setup on ceilingcat, so we can revert to solaris without any trouble if it doesn't work out. a. -- Andrew Harford System Administrator, DCU Networking Society Ordinary Member, Societies & Publications Committee You can't win, Darth.
