[Admin-discuss] Virtual Machines!
Hey, After a good bit of work by a lot of people, I think we're (finally) able to offer members full virtual machines :) As the software to manage them is only about 3 weeks old and was written primarily by someone in a semi-asleep state, these (or specifically, the management interface) should be considered in a sort of pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha v0.00001-unstable state, but if anyone is interested in testing them, let us know and we'll set you up. We'd love to hear if people have any thoughts (or bug reports) on the whole setup, before we "officially" launch them in a few weeks (hopefully tech week). The management interface is at https://vmweb.redbrick.dcu.ie - the login details are not the same as your main Redbrick account, so don't enter your main password. As I said, let us know and we'll create you an account and a VM to play with. If anyone's interested, the source for the management interface is at http://hg.redbrick.dcu.ie/rbvm - if anyone sees any security holes (and I don't doubt they exist), let me know. VMs are given on the basis of trust. While they're fairly well firewalled from the main Redbrick network (and ISS's network), you still have the potential to screw up the VM network itself. We trust that users are generally well intentioned and won't do this, but if anyone does, we'll say mean things to them and delete their VM account, among other things. VMs have http/ftp access through the proxy at http://136.206.16.254:3128. The DNS server is 136.206.16.254. The mail relay is the same. (these services run on the physical machine cynic). The VMs all run on Daniel, a big tank of a machine we got last year for this purpose (8 core AMD Opteron 2356, 24GB RAM). Looks exactly like morpheus only with more lights. There are a bunch of ISOs uploaded to the system already for users to choose from, but if you want more, let us know and we'll see what we can do. Regards, -Andrew

I've put in some DNS entries for this stuff - proxy.vmsrv.redbrick.dcu.ie, mail.vmsrv.redbrick.dcu.ie and added an ntp server time.vmsrv.redbrick.dcu.ie a. -- Andrew Harford I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper!
