Visit of Dorothea Lange's son to Ireland, May 4-12, 2005 Daniel Dixon, son of one of the world's most famous photographers Dorothea Lange (1895-1965), will give four audio-visual presentations on his mother and her work in Ireland in May. Dorothea Lange is one of the most influential photographers to this day, and is crediting with starting the genre of photojournalism. She is most associated with her iconic photographs of the Great Depression in the USA, but in 1954 she spent a month in Ireland and took 2,400 photographs. Part of that archive was published in the book, Dorothea Lange?s Ireland, which was a bestseller in 1996. It was also the basis for the documentary film Photos to Send, which won Best Documentary awards in Galway and nine other film festivals around the world. During that trip she spent a few days in Dublin, and a month in Co. Clare, on the farms, and at the fairs, hurling matches, churches, villages and towns. She was accompanied by her journalist son, Daniel Dixon, who wrote the essay to go with her Irish photos in Life magazine in March 1955. This year Daniel Dixon makes his first return to Ireland since 1954. He has travelled throughout the US delivering presentations about his mother's work, and he will deliver four such presentations in Ireland on: May 4 (lunchtime): Dublin City University (DCU), Dublin 9; May 5, 7pm: National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2; May 10, 3pm: the Centre for the Study of Human Settlement, NUI Galway; May 12, 7.30pm: County Library in Ennis, Co. Clare, where many of the people who were photographed by Lange are expected to be there. Admission to all events is free. Additional info Daniel Dixon also worked with the famous photographers Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham and Roi Partridge. His father was Maynard Dixon, a famous painter of the American West. His daughter Leslie Dixon is the Hollywood screenwriter who wrote Mrs. Doubtfire (starring Robin Williams), and rewrote The Thomas Crown Affair (starring Pierce Brosnan). Just reminding you guys of our end of year expo next wednesday the 20th at 2pm in the glass room. We need entries, so get them in. We will have an agm then on Thursday, and we need to elect the new committee for next year, so it's very important you attend. We also have been chosen to represent DCU at the BICS National Society Awards 2004/2005 in the Most Improved Society category, which is a great honour, so thanks a million for supporting us this year. Hey everyone, Just wanted to let you know about DebateSoc's 'James Bond Ball' on April 14th... Tickets go on sale next week. They supported us muchly during PhotoWeek, so we're doing the same for them! :) If anyone's going and would like to take photographs for An Tarbh, that'd also be appreciated. We also need submissions for our end of year exhibition 'Exposure' which will be in week 11. Email me if you have anything - anything goes at this one. We need them asap, please. :) We're planning a couple more workshops, details will follow. :) Kate
