Coming up soon will be the Maths Intervarsities Competition, with MathSocs
representing the different universities around Ireland taking part. Last
years Intervarsities was in Cork, and a good crowd from DCU went down to
compete and otherwise. The Intervarsities is a good excuse for a get-together,
with students from all over the country coming along. This year the competition
will be held in UCD, so hopefully DCU will have a good showing.
Each university chooses a four person team to sit a test. The maths in
the
test is leaving cert level, but the questions can be quite difficult. Examples
go like:
find the minimum of x^x (x to the power of x) for x>0, or
find all a,b integers, a not equal to b, such that a^b=b^a (a to the power
of b equals b to the power of a).
Challenging but nothing too far out. This year's competition takes place
March 7th,8th,9th and to prepare the MathSoc are having informal meetings
to go over past questions and methods. These meetings are being held on
Mondays
at 5.30pm in X137 and all who are interseted in attending are welcome to
do so.
