"So, Who wouldn't want to be a millionaire?" Thats what will be on dicussion at our first Math's Lecture, given by our own Head of School no less, Prof. Alaistair Wood. To be more precise, Prof. Wood will introduce us to the "7 Clay Mathematical Problems", which will yield $1,000,000 for each clever sod that solves one of them. The intricacies of each problem posed will be explored, and who knows, this may spark off some genius you never knew you had and off you go to make your fortune! For futher information regarding these "Millenium Problems" see an article from the Irish Times at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~maths/events/images/millionaire.jpg and visit the official Clay site at http://www.claymath.org/prize-problems/index.htm This lecture will take place directly after the end of the General Meeting @7pm. A venue is yet to be decided, but all will be revealed at the General Meeting. A WORD FROM THE WEBMASTER: Well as some of you may have noticed, the site has yet to be launched :( However, by Thursday, there should be something worth viewing up, which continuous updates to follow, so keeping checking at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~maths At the moment the "Helpline" is available for use. This forum can be used by all members to post any ickle math problems they may have encountered on there travels, and hopefully someone smart enough will post up some help for ya :o) The more who get involved in this, the more successful it is likely to be, so get posting at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~maths/cgi-bin/messageboard/view.pl I know this address way seem a little long winded, but don't fret, come Thurs a link will be a vailable form the homepage at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~maths Oh, and one final word. We've had some queries as regards the results of the Competition we ran on Clubs and Socs day. About 20 correct answers were recorded, so we decided to award three prizes, all chosen randomly from a hat. The results were to be printed in An Tarbh this week, but we missed the deadline for submissions :( But anyways, here they are 1st Place: Ciaran O Conaire 2nd Prize: Robert Kenny 3rd Prize: Alan Meaney If prizes have not already been collected, come to the General Meeting, or if you can't make it, mail us: maths@redbrick.dcu.ie So thats all the ranting for now.
