DCU Maths Society in association with Taking Care of Business (in a Flash) Promotions Presents The Second Annual Random Pub Crawl: The Crawl along the Quays Conceived by Dónal Dowling, Ray Dunne & Thomas Waters Based on a idea by Paul Erdós Inspired by a drink by Arthur Guinness As last years one went so well we've decided to revive the random pub crawl. It will take place this Thursday 28th November. For those who are unfamiliar with it the idea is to have a list of pubs and to visit them in random order based on some algorithm. The theme this year is to have 6 pubs on de north side (DNS) and 6 on de south side (DSS) close enough to the quays and see how many times we cross the Liffey. The pubs in question are DSS DNS 0. The Neptune 1. The White Horse 2. Charlie P.'s 3. Doyle's 4. The Oval 5. The Quays 6. The Flowing Tide 7. The Foggy Dew 8. SPI 9. Mulligan's 10. Nealon's 11. The Long Stone. The starting pub will be The Flowing Tide which was chosen at random by Dr. Dana Mackey. To decide on the next pub we get our algorithm to generate a number from 0 to 11 which is added (modulo 12) to the number corresponding to the pub we happen to be in. So if we get a zero we stay in the same pub. In the event we encounter any pubs which we don't get into or from which myself and Thomas are barred we will get the nice friendly bouncer to pick a random number for us to decide on the next pub. Some of the pubs are quite close (The Neptune is below The Flowing Tide) while others will involve a bit of a trek (The Long Stone to Nearons, which is on Capel St., for example). But that's really part of the fun. To see some pictures of the last year's festivities go to http://redbrick.dcu.ie/~maths/pubpics/thumbs/index.htm We'll be meeting in The Flowing Tide at 7:30 and plan to leave at 8:00. If you're going to be late you of course won't know where we are. However you can contact me on 0857318476 or Thomas on 0872966423 to find out. Oh the excitement of it all! Hope to see you on Thursday. "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy" - Benjamin Franklin Ray. Secretary, DCU Maths Society. maths@redbrick.dcu.ie redbrick.dcu.ie/~maths
