[MathSoc] IMA/IMTA Talk
Hi all, A few of us are planning to attend the talk being given by this year's young scientist winner in St. Patrick's College Drumcondra this Tuesday. See below for full details. We're meeting at 7:15 outside the new bar. We're going to walk to the venue weather permitting. Ray, Secretary, DCU Maths Society. maths@redbrick.dcu.ie redbrick.dcu.ie/~maths "The Distribution of the Primes and the Underlying Order to Chaos" David Michael O' Doherty (Gonzaga College) (Winner of the 2002 Esat Young Scientists and Technology Award) Tuesday 19th November 2002 at 8.00 pm St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Dublin 9. Room E211 Abstract: The talk will look at the distribution of prime numbers using both an experimental approach (C++ programs) and formal analysis. The unproven conjecture in number theory: p(x + y) £ p(x) + p(y), where x, y ³ 2 which states that the number of primes from 1 to x is greater than or equal to the number of primes from y + 1 to y + x, is examined. Special cases of the inequality are proved. The distributions of single primes and prime k-tuples are also examined. Insights into the relationship between primes and other chaotic systems are also highlighted. See http://dmod.digitalrice.com
