-Introduction to Python, LG26, 6.30pm Tuesday 1st of November -Resignation -Hoodie order -Week 7 Preview ==Introduction to Python== We'll be holding an introduction to Python talk tomorrow(Tuesday) at 6.30pm in LG26. Some topics which will be covered are basic data types, lists, functions and classes. If there is time, we might touch on sockets and multithreaded programs. The speaker will be David Lynam(coconut) who is a CA graduate. This will be followed by platters at the bar. ==Resignation== Paul Bunbury has resigned from his position as admin on the Redbrick committee. We'd like to thank him for all his hard work and wish him the best. If you are interested in sitting the admin test please email committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie for more information. More details to follow. ==Hoodies== Want your very own Redbrick hoodie? We'll be taking orders in the Hub on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2pm. They will cost €25 and you'll need to pay upfront to confirm your order. The order will be placed in week 7 so if these times don't suit you please email committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie ASAP and we can try organise and alternative payment method. ==Week 7== We have unfortunately had to postpone Q-Zar for another week, It will now be on Wednesday of week 7. Monday of week 7 will have a boolette in conjunction with Gamessoc (http://boolette.alamzy.com) and admin training will return on Thursday with more on bash scripting. That's it for now. Hey everyone, -Rootkit Talk - "Ghost in the Machine", Tuesday 25/10, 6pm, CG05 -Admin Trainig - Bash Scripting Workshop, Thursday 27/10, 6pm, LG26 -First Year Rep Elected -Week 6 Overview ==Rootkit Talk - "Ghost in the Machine" == To celebrate Halloween and Zombie week we'll be treating you to a spooky talk on Tuesday at 6pm in CG05 (ground floor of the Henry Grattan). The talk will be presented by Cathal (aka nemo). Cathal works for Symantec, the largest maker of security software for computers. Windows Rootkits are pieces of software designed to be stealthy and are generally used to hide malicious programs and their associated side effects. They do this by manipulating Windows in such a way that it doesn't behave exactly as you would expect. Rootkits can be used to modify process images, system dlls and kernel structures to prevent Windows from reporting specific parts of the operating system and filesystem states to the user. Cathal is going to present an overview of some of the most common Rootkit techniques that are used to keep the ghosts in the machine hidden. The first 20 attendees to arrive at the talk will receive a free pint of Olm or can of Keller in NuBar afterwards, where we will also be tucking into a platter or two. ==Admin Training - Bash Scripting== This week's admin training takes place on Thursday at 6pm in LG26. The topic is bash scripting. ==First Year Rep Elected - Polka== Conratulations to Triona Barrow (polka)! She was elected our new First Year Rep at last week's EGM. ==Week 6 Overview== A little taste of what we'll be doing during reading week: Tuesday 1/11 will feature an introduction to Python talk. -Linux Installfest -First year rep elections -Admin Training Slides Week 4 is upon us! So, what do we have on offer? == Linux Installfest == Want to install Linux on your laptop but aren't quite sure of how to do this? We'll be giving a step-by-step tutorial this Tuesday from 4pm - 6pm. Pizza will of course be provided. Can't have you all going hungry now, can we? We will confirm the room tomorrow. Bring your laptop! Make sure to back up any important information before the event as there is always a small chance of something going wrong and your data being compromised. == First Year Rep Elections == Our EGM to elect a first year rep will be held this Wednesday at 2pm in Q121 (first floor of the business building). If you would like to run or have your say in electing our newest committee member (or if you're just a fan of free pizza) make sure to attend. Hi everyone, -Admin Training - Introduction to Linux Administration -First Year Rep Elections -Downtime -Pints == Admin Training == Interested in learning how to admin a linux server? Or even just getting to know a little bit avout how linux actually works? This thursday sees the return of our admin training! It will be at 6pm in LG25 in the School of Computing. Our first session is titled "An Introduction To Linux Administration" Our admin team are going to walk you through linux from the very basics. They'll get you familiar with the linux command line, what various linux tools are used daily in system administration, and explain a bit about how linux ticks. Previous experience with linux is non-essential! Everyone has to start somewhere, our admins definitely did! There'll be pizza! == First Year Rep Elections == Want to join our committee? Each year we elect a first year rep. This is a great chance to get to have your say in the kinds of events we run, learn about the running of a society and get to know loads of new people. If you'd like to run for the position (or come along to vote) we'll be holding the EGM at 2pm on Wednesday 19th of October (so not this week, the one after). We'll be providing pizza. Feel free to reply to this email with any questions you may have about the position or the election process. == Downtime = There will be downtime from Friday 14/10 - Monday 17/10 for essential server mainentance and kernel updates. == Pints == We'll be heading to the Nubar to unwind after lectures this Monday (10/10) from 5pm. Freshers' Ball - Renewals - Thank you

-Freshers' Ball in association with DJ Soc -Account renewals -Thank you for your feedback ==Freshers' Ball== We will be holding our annual freshers' ball upstairs in Matt Weldon's, aka The Slipper, Ballymun Road. We'll be kicking off the festivities at 7pm with some drinks promotions (3 euro selected drinks), free finger food for everyone and our own custom Redbrick cocktail that has been created just for us! Everyone is welcome so come and catch up with old friends, meet new ones and party to the tunes provided by DCU's own DJ Soc! ==Account Renewals== Clubs and Socs Days are being held today (Tuesday 5th October) and tomorrow (Wednesday 6th October) in the Hub. Our table is situated conveniently just next to the NuBar, so pop over, get some sweets, hear aboout our plans for next year (because trust me, next year is going to be GOOD) and renew your account. The prices are €4 for members and € for associates. Other ways to pay : http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/help/joining . Remember to email us if you are paying by Paypal or bank transfer so that we know to renew your account. Need more incentive to join? Well, how about : we're getting a common room in association with Engineering Soc. Only members of either of those societies will get access. MaK has a trip abroad in the works, more varied talks aimed at various levels(admin training, career related talks, programming talks and workshops, mobile app development...). Plus, did I mention that there'll be sweets? The deadline for renewals is the Monday 7th of November. After that date all unrenewed accounts will be deactivated. ==Member Survey== Thank you to everyone who participated in our membership survey for this year. We got some very informative feedback and will make sure to take it into consideration when we start finalising this years' schedule. We're holding a planning meeting on Friday so if you would like to volunteer for a talk/workshop or would like to suggest a topic please reply to this email. More programming talks and workshops were requested by a lot of you so we'll be working to get more of those organised for you. Admin training was also a popular one so that won't be going anywhere. If at any point during the year you'd like to tell us what we're doing right, what we're doing wrong or what you'd like to see then don't hesitate to get in touch.
