Apologies for the second email guys, we just received a last minute update on one of our events for this week. ==Movie Night== Date: Thursday 29th of November Time: 6:30 Venue: C104 Engineering Society have kindly invited us along to their movie night this Thursday. They'll be showing the hilarious film 'Ted'! This should be a fun night, and a great chance to get to know some more of the faces who we share the common room with. We hope everyone's looking forward to the end of term and a great holiday season. ==New Events Officer== ==Hoodie Order== ==Google STEP Internship== ==Christmas Party== ==Web Development Talk== ==Programming Tutorials== ==Admin Training== ==New Events Officer== We'd like to welcome our new Events Officer, Áine Duffy (Pedro) to the committee. She has some great plans for the coming year, and has hit the ground running starting to organise the upcoming Christmas Party. We on the committee are really looking forward to working with Áine over the coming year. ==Hoodie Order== We will be placing this years hoodie order on Friday Nov 30th.The hoodies will cost be 25 euro each. If you would like a redbrick hoodie, you can add your order to the list at this link: http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~vadimck/hoodies/ Adding your order to the list merely records your interest and order details for reference. Your hoodie selection will only be placed in the final order if you have paid the 25 euro to the committee on or before the 28th of November. We will be accepting payments on the following dates: Monday the 26th, Tuesday the 27th and Wednesday the 28th of November. Note that payments will not be accepted after the 28th of November. If you wish to pay for your order but will not be able to pay on these dates contact us at committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie ==Google STEP Internship== Closing Date: 28th December Website: http://bit.ly/Rlo1wJ This is Google's 2nd year of offering STEP internships in Europe. STEP is a unique programme in so far as it is focused on 1st and 2nd year Computer Science and related subjects students - so graduating in 2015 and later. This 12 week program 1st July 2013 and 20th September 2013 is open to all qualified university students enrolled in a B.A. or B.Sc. focused on: Computer Science Computer Engineering Informatics or in a closely related technical field. Applicants should have some programming experience in either Java, Python, C, or C++. Google are also looking to promote internships and Google products and services throughout the year, we'll keep you posted on them as they arise ==Christmas Party== Date: Thursday 6th of December Venue: Matt Weldons, 'The Slipper' Time: 7pm This year's Intersocs Christmas party is being held on the Thursday of week 11, mark the dates on your G-Calendars as it's sure to be a big one. There'll also be a visit from Santa, as well as plenty of platters and festive drinks deals! Hope to see you all there! More details to follow!! ==Web Development Talk== Date:Tuesday 4th of December Time: 5pm-6pm Venue: LG26 Dr. Donal Fitzpatrick will be presenting a web design talk in week 11. The talk will centre around web development powered by Drupal. Drupal is an open source content management system (CMS) used to design websites with a focus on modularity, standards, collaboration, ease-of-use, and more. It is a cutting-edge platform that supports the latest technologies that the Web has to offer. This is set to be an insightful talk from one of DCU's own experienced lecturers, so be sure to attend and take note of any development advice or tips he has to offer. ==Programming Tutorials== Date: Monday 26th November. Time: 5pm Venue: LG26 Due to an increasing demand from our members, we are planning to run weekly programming tutorials. During these tutorial sessions you will be able to bring along any problems you are having with your code/coding concepts and we'll do our best to help you out. Whether you're getting a compiler error that you don't recognise, you're having trouble with some coding concepts or a logic error in your code is driving you crazy sometimes a fresh set of eyes is all you need. These tutors helping out at the tutorials are students and as such may not be able to answer all of your problems. Also it should be noted that they will not be able to give you the answers to any assignments/labs you have that you are being graded on. If you are having trouble with an assignment or lab we will try to help you understand the problem and how you should go about solving it rather than giving you the answer. The tutorials were quite well received last week, hopefully those who came along got the help they required. We're hoping to get some feedback from those who have attended over the next while to see where we can improve. If all goes well we hope to get people in from industry to give talks and tutorials over the coming weeks. Scripting is a useful tool for performing the same task multiple times, or on large sets of data. Some typical uses for shell scripts include file manipulation, program execution, and printing text. Needless to say scripting is an invaluable skill for any system administrator so join us on Tuesday for some training and some craic. Hey guys, I have lots to fill you in on this week. ==Functional Spec. Talk== ==Programming Tutorials== ==Admin Training== ==Hoodie Orders== ==Events Officer EGM== ==Christmas Party== ==Functional Spec. Talk== Date: Tuesday 20th November Time: 5pm-6pm Venue: C114 One of our associate members, Lotta Mikkonen, will be holding her talk on writing a functional specification this week. Lotta is a graduate of DCU's Computer Applications and has much valued experience in writing functional specs for course projects. This is a vital stage in software development and is a necessary skill for any computing student. The talk will be especially of use to anyone undertaking a 3rd or 4th year computing project this year. ==Programming Tutorials== Date: Monday 19th November Time: 5pm-6pm Venue: LG26 Our first session of weekly programming tutorials is finally here! During these tutorial sessions you will be able to bring along any problems you are having with your code/coding concepts and we'll do our best to help you out. Once again I have to remind you that the tutors helping out at the tutorials are students and as such may not be able to answer all of your problems. Also it should be noted that they will not be able to give you the answers to assignments/labs you are being graded on. This weeks topic is "IPv4 and Subnetting". In this session the admins will be demonstrating the way in which IPv4 addressing works to send internet traffic around the web. They will also be talking about subnetting and how the internet is structured. ==Hoodie Orders== We are still taking hoodie orders at http://redbrick.dcu.ie/~vadimck/hoodies The cost is €25 and must be paid by 28th November or your hoodie will not be ordered. We will be taking payments at Admin Training, Programming Tutorials and the EGM. ==Events Officer EGM== Date: Wednesday 21st November Time: 3pm Location: QG21 As you already know we will be holding an EGM to elect a new Events Officer this Wednesday. Events officer is an active role in the Redbrick committee, with lots to organise, of course the rest of us are there to help with the bigger events. They also have a say in creating new events to add to the Redbrick calendar! If you are considering running for the position and have any questions don't hesitate to email committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie . ==Christmas Party== It's that time of year again, get out the old Christmas hats and tinsel because the annual intersocs Christmas Party is coming soon! Talk== ==Admin Training== Date: Tuesday 13th of November Time:6pm-7pm Venue: LG 26 Admin training will resume this week with our second session of the year. Her work on the committee, both as last year's First Year Rep and in the past few months as Events Officer has been greatly appreciated and we will miss working with her. We will be electing a new Events Officer will be elected in two weeks time at our EGM, details below. ==Hoodie Order== We will be placing this years hoodie order in a few weeks time.The hoodies will cost be 25 euro each. Send it on to us and we'll consider using it during our presentations making sure to give credit where it's due of course. Also we would like to know what some of your favourite things about redbrick are, as these will be the things that we highlight on the Open Days. I have attached the slides from last week below for those who wanted them. ==Carbon Has Retired== As some of you may already know the admin team took Carbon offline permanently over the weekend during the period of scheduled downtime. Carbon was serving as our primary programming/development server and was also serving as a secondary login server. It has now retired and has been replaced with our new server Pygmalion which is now up and running. ==Events Officer EGM== Date: Wednesday the 21st of November Time: 3pm Venue: To be confirmed. We will be holding an EGM in two weeks time to elect our new Events Officer. If you are interested in running for the position and want to know more about the the role and it's responsibilities get in touch with any member of the committee and we'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.
