Afternoon everyone,
I'd like to take a few moments to outline the situation regarding the new
constitution that has been enacted by the SLC/OSL.
As a lot of you are aware, there has been a proposal to put in place a
unified constitution for all societies. The template is attached.
The point that most people have picked up on is point 3.3.1
Associate Members shall pay an annual membership fee to the Society. The
> amount of this fee is determined by the OSL as 10 times the ordinary
> membership fee.
This measure was in no way intended to be punitive or inhibitory towards
DCU Clubs or Societies.
The idea behind the common constitution was to level the playing field and
to ensure that annual capitation funds that are allocated to all clubs and
societies are evenly distributed; to support clubs and societies to support
the activities they run for current students.
Following this announcement I arranged a call with Una Redmond (Manager of
the Office of Student Life) on Monday morning (28/4/'14)
During this call Ms. Redmond outlined the rationale behind this fee
structure.
Ms.Redmond was also aware of the unique membership breakdown that Redbrick
has and the role of our associates in the society.
To this end there are ongoing talks to amend and consult with societies on
an individual basis with a view to giving societies an opportunity to put a
proposal to the SLC for a lower associate membership fee based on the
particular circumstances.
If you would like to talk to me on a one-to-one basis please feel free I'd
love to get feedback from everyone on this matter.
