Hey guys! First of all I'd like to welcome all of our new members to Redbrick. We look forward to seeing you at our future events. There will be lots of things going on throughout the year so don't be afraid to get involved.! == Intro to Redbrick== == Redbrick and Gamessoc Freshers Ball== ==First year rep EGM== ==Account Renewal== ==Intro to Redbrick== Date: Thursday 4th of October Time:6pm Location: LG26 We will be holding our annual "Intro to Redbrick" talk tomorrow evening in LG26. It's a perfect opportunity to learn about everything that Redbrick has to offer. We'll be showing how to get started with logging in, accessing your storage space and giving you some other cool tips on how to use all the resources that we offer. ==Redbrick and Gamessoc Freshers Ball== Date: Thursday 4th of October Time:7pm Location: Downstairs in Matt Weldons (The Slipper) This is the first big event of the year on the Redbrick calendar. Our Freshers Ball will follow the "Intro to Redbrick" talk tomorrow evening. We plan to head straight over to the slipper from the talk, so if you wont be attending the talk we'll meet you over there, downstairs in the Slipper about 7pm. The Fresher's Ball gives the 18th Generation of new members a chance to get to know one another as well as getting to know some of our current members. This year sees Redbrick teaming up with Gamessoc for an even bigger party, so come along and enjoy some grand food, grand company and grand pints. ==First Year Rep EGM== We will be holding an EGM to elect a First Year Rep (and vote on some other issues) in Week 4, on Wednesday 17th of October at 3pm, the venue has yet to be confirmed. Topics on the Agenda: System Administrator Election. Amendments to Redbrick Constitution. Rules and Regulations. First Year Rep Position. AOB If you plan on running for either of the positions available or want your say on any of the other issues make sure to attend. There will be free pizza!! ==Account Renewal== New members and members who have already renewed may disregard this notice. Just a reminder to our members who have not renewed their membership. It's the end of Week One and already we have news and updates. == PyCon == == NodeJSDub == == Common Room Cards == == Admin Test== == Intro to Redbrick & Fresher's Ball == == EGM == ==PyCon== Date: 13th and 14th of October Location: Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Dublin Website: http://python.ie/pycon/2012/ Tickets: €12 PyCon is the largest annual gathering of the Irish Python community. The conference will bring together Irish talent and world class leaders in the Python community for a fun, informative and friendly event. Saturday and Sunday will consist of talks, tutorials, workshops, open-spaces and sprints. We are hoping to organise a group to attend PyCon, so please get in touch with committee if you're interested in attending. == NodeJSDub == Date: 4th October Time:7pm Location: EngineYard Offices, Barrow St. Dublin 4. Website: http://www.nodejsdublin.com/ NodeJSDub is having its 4th meeting this October in Barrow Street in Dublin, it's a get together for those who are curious about node.js or are considering using node for an upcoming project. This month there're 2 confirmed speakers from mobile app developers FeedHenry as well as the promise of pizza aplenty and a selection of 'refreshments'. ==Common Room (N109) Cards== We have been informed by the Estates Office that the common room cards have lapsed. These keycards will then be reissued next week. Hey everyone, we're getting closer and closer to next semester and have a few things we want to fill you in on. == Pygmalion == == Creadak's Resignation == == OWASP == == NodeDublin == == Skycon and PyCon == == Pygmalion == Pygmalion, one of our new servers purchased earlier this year, has been installed by the admin team and is now up and running for general use. Pygmalion is our new development server, and the admins have installed a number of compilers and such on it, but please let us know if there's anything that was missed that you feel should be there. Happy coding! == Creadak's Resignation == As some of you may already know Craig Mac Entee (Creadak) has decided to resign as one of our system administrators. His work on the admin team was greatly appreciated and he will be missed. A new System Administrator will be elected at the EGM a few weeks into the upcoming semester, along with a new First Year Representative. Details of the admin exam will be announced when the new semester begins. == OWASP == Date: September 4th-6th 2012 Location: Trinity College Dublin Website: http://www.appsecireland.org The OWASP Programming Contest is running this year will be focused on different teams from universities across Europe competing against each other while coding a security -focused web application. After the two days finish, a panel of companies and security professionals will award as winner to the team/s who built the most secure application. The prize giveaway will take place on the 6th at the OWASP Appsec Ireland Conference. All students who take part of this competition will also receive a free ticket to the conference. We are looking for members who are interested in this, and hope to organise teams to represent Redbrick and DCU. The teams are comprised of 2-4 people. == NodeDublin == Date: 17th and 18th of October Location: Guinness Store House Dublin Website: http://www.nodedublin.com/ NodeDublin is a two day conference event hosting some of the greatest speakers from the node community. Tickets are normally €475 but redbrick can provide tickets at a discounted student rate of €70. This is amazing value as a ticket entitles you to two days all in, food, parties, alcohol, and lots of freebies. These places are extremely limited, so contact committee as soon as possible if you're interested in attending and we'll try our best to get our hands on some tickets. == Skycon == Date: 6th and 7th October 2012 Location: University of Limerick Website: http://skycon.skynet.ie/2012/ Skycon will be a two day event that encompasses many diverse aspects of computers. It caters for people who are interested in areas ranging from cloud computing, to open source side of computer development, mobile development and game development. Confirmed speakers so far include Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu SABDFL) and Randall Munroe (xkcd). Hey all, We are in the process of planning a trip to the 29th Chaos Communication Conference (29C3) in Berlin, Germany this December. The event is scheduled for the 27th-30th of December and features a variety of lectures and workshops on technical and political issues. Another important part of the Congress is the hack center allowing room for around 600 people to operate their devices. The hack center and other areas of the Congress are connected to the Internet with a broadband connection. The hack center is considered a huge laboratory for operating and testing modern network technology and software. We are looking at prices and feasibility at the moment and would ask anyone who is interested in going to let us know. Once we have numbers, we can work out approximate number of people who will go, we can work out the costs of the trip. Azazel Testing.

Hi All, We are continuing the tests to get to the root cause of the issue that brought down Azazel Monday morning. To achieve this we will be unmounting /storage on all boxes and remounting it read only from backups. So we can test azazel with the perc attached. Logins will still be accepted during this time however you will be unable to modify your files. Mail will also be disabled. This will start at 8PM Tuesday. Apologies for the inconvenience. Azazel Downtime - An Update.

Hi, As was highlighted in our earlier announcement Azazel was reset earlier this morning. We are still trying to get to the root cause of this issue however for the moment to restore services to users we have changed login.redbrick and redbrick to point to at carbon. Due to this the RSA key fingerprint for these addresses will have changed to the following; 16:de:62:bc:b7:22:aa:38:c2:c7:e9:ae:fc:78:22:9c Apologies for any inconvenience caused. Unplanned Downtime - Azazel.

Hi, As you may have noticed our login server, azazel, was reset early this morning. We are still not completely sure of what caused this and to ensure it does not happen again unexpectedly we need to take it down again later to perform diagnostics. We expect that we will be down from about 6:30/7 PM today (Monday 18th) and will try to restore services as soon as possible. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. Redbrick Admin Team

Hoodie Orders || Downtime || Connector Event

Hey all there's a couple of important things to note this week: == Hoodie Orders == As you all know the details of the hoodie order were very difficult to pin down during the handover. At this point in time we would like to offer a refund of 25 euro to those who do not want to wait any longer. If you don't want a refund and simply want your hoodie, we assure you that we are still doing everything we can to track the details down so that we can investigate the overly long wait for the hoodies and ultimately get the hoodies to you. We would like to offer our apologies once again for the scarcity of information over the past few weeks. We will let you know what is happening, as it happens. == Downtime 5th of June == This coming Tuesday the 5th of June access to all Redbrick services will be unavailable as the admin team will be performing network maintainance and applying updates. Services will be unavailable from around 7pm onwards and we advise that you save any important material, and shut down any important processes well in advance of this time so that you don't lose any work. All screen sessions will be reset as a result of the downtime. The admin team apologise for any inconvenience caused. == Connector Event 13th/14th of July == Connector are organising a mini-startup weekend on Thursday the 13th and Friday 14th of July with DCU Ryan Academy. The event will run Thursday evening and all day Friday. We would like to encourage as many members as possible to attend these events as they are a great opportunity to network with like-minded people. Thursday evening will consist of talks from business and technical speakers, with pizza and beer afterwards. This will be a great opportunity to pitch network and pitch ideas to everyone you meet. Friday, all day, you will have the opportunity to work on your ideas with business mentors on hand to give you any guidance you need. There will be workshops in the morning and evening, an opportunity to pitch to investors and prizes for best ideas etc. Tickets are 20 euro (covers both days) with free food provided throughout. This will involve a day of sessions delivered by international speakers on how you can build and make money from Windows 8 apps. It will also be a great opportunity to network with 300 other professional Irish developers. The event is free and open to all members however it has limited places. We are currently working on tracking these details down so that we can investigate the overly long wait for the hoodies. We apologise for the scarcity of information at this point in time. We will let you know all the details as they come. ======== Daniel Downtime ======== This coming Thursday (17th May) at approximately 2pm the admin team will be applying security updates to daniel our VM server. We recommend that you shut down your VMs before this so as to not lose any work. These updates were previously scheduled for the 27th of April however admin team have been busy lately, we felt it was better to reschedule for a later date to ensure the updates run smoothly.
