HEAnet is Ireland's National Education & Research Network. It connects all of Ireland's universities, IoTs and other HEIs (along with every primary & secondary school) to the Internet and supplies a number of other related services. This talk will give a brief introduction to the company and its 3 layered network, as well as touching on some of the more interesting, if less precise, ways it can be monitored! Brian Nisbet is the Network Operations Manager for HEAnet. His team are responsible for building and maintaining HEAnet's networks and keeping an eye on them at all times. He realises that, these days, Internet connectivity is like any other utility, people only notice it when it stops working, so he does his best to make sure people don't forget what's involved in 21st Century plumbing.
