Hi all, Here are the topics of this week's announce: =Web Development Talk= =Linux InstallFest= =Irish Cancer Society Fundraiser= =Trip Away: FOSDEM= =Admin Exam= =HelpDesk : Developing on Redbrick= =Admin Training= =Web Development Talk= Date: Tuesday 12th November Time: 5pm Location: LG26 This week instead of our helpdesk talk we will be having our very own Maximilian Hoffmann (tsov). Max is currently working for Terminal4 while finishing his final year, and he'll be showing us how to create a good looking website easily. We will be going from the very basics upwards, so if you have no experience don't worry! There may be a sneaky surprise as well at the talk, so bring along your friends. We will be covering a number of topics during the workshop, including: - HTML5 and CSS3 - The box model - Cross browser compatibility - Introduction to Bootstrap There will of course be pizza! =Linux InstallFest= Date: Thursday 14th November Time: 5pm Location: L101 If you would like to install Linux on your own personal machine, join us next week when our Helpdesk and Admin teams will help you to do so. We will provide installation discs to those who attend and if your laptop doesn't have a cd drive please bring a USB stick that's at least 2GB in size. We will be offering copies of OpenSUSE, MInt and Ubuntu with both Dual Boot and VM options available. =Irish Cancer Society Fundraiser= Website: http://www.mycharity.ie/event/katia_valadeaus_event/ Some members of Redbrick who have been affected by cancer are working together to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society. The members will be dying their hair, getting their legs waxed (ouch!) and getting cancer related tattoos. If you would like to donate, you can contact lithium@redbrick.dcu.ie . =Trip Away: FOSDEM= Dates: 31st January - 2nd February 2014 Location: ULB Campus Solbosh,Brussels, Belgium Website: https://fosdem.org/2014/ As you might be aware, a few years ago Redbrick went on the grand voyage to Brussels to attend FOSDEM (Free Open Source Developer European Meeting). This year the committee would really love to treat you and go again. The only issue is that we would have to leave Ireland on the final day of winter exams. This could pose a problem for some people, so we would love if you could email us at committee@redbrick.dcu.ie with any alternatives that you can think of! =Admin Exam= If you are interested in becoming a Redbrick System Administrator please email us at committee@redbrick.dcu.ie . Previous exams can be found at: http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/help/exams . =HelpDesk : Developing on Redbrick= Date: Tuesday 19th November Time: 5pm Location: LG26 In this talk our Helpdesk team will be introducing you to our development server Pygmalion. They will be walking you through the selection of compilers and interpreters available on our systems (javac, gcc, python). If you're a code junkie or an aspiring developer, this is not something to be missed! We especially recommend this talk to any first years who have just started programming. =Admin Training= Date: Thursday 21st November Time: 6pm Location: L128 We'll be finishing off our install of the LAMP stack and taking you through setting up PHP and MYSQL, we will also show you some cool tricks! Then we'll have a beginners look at Shell scripting! As usual there will be pizza.
