Calling all Students, Science Teachers, Parents!

Don’t miss this opportunity!

Astronomy Ireland is launching a new secondary schools competition for World Space Week 2011.

This competition is open to all students attending a second-level school in Ireland.

World Space Week runs from October 4th – 10th and to celebrate Astronomy Ireland are giving away fantastic prizes to three lucky secondary school students and their schools. To give as many students a chance as possible we are running the competition for two weeks from the start of World Space Week with the deadline for entries on the 18th October at 17.00. The winners will be announced on our website on October 19th. To be in with a chance to win all they have to do is log on to www.astronomy.ie/competition and answer one simple space-related question.

The theme of this year’s World Space Week is 50 years of human space-flight and in honouring the theme we are giving away hardback copies of the highly acclaimedProject Mercury’ by John Catchpole, worth over €50 to three lucky students. To make it even better, the students will also win a year’s subscription to Astronomy & Space magazine for their school.

‘Project Mercury’ is a riveting account of the first ever US Manned Space Program, and it lay the groundwork for Project Gemini and the follow-on Apollo Moon–landing program. This book is ideal for any young space buffs out there and we would encourage all science teachers to tell their students about the competition and how they can go about entering!

The year’s subscription to ‘Astronomy&Space’ Magazine is a valuable prize for any school. It is an excellent teaching tool and the ideal addition to any school library. It can serve as an invaluable educational resource for science students of all levels and disciplines. Our magazine features regular updates on what’s happening with the ISS, Hubble Space Telescope and much more. It also features and hugely popular reader’s gallery and we welcome contributions from young budding astrophotographers!

PLEASE TELL ALL STUDENTS ABOUT THIS FANTASTIC COMPETITION AND HELP US TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT SPACE AND ASTRONOMY AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY
