1. "Cosmic Ghost"
- Major Summer Public Lectures - International
Speaker
For our big Summer Public Lecture, Astronomy
Ireland are flying in a very special speaker from the Netherlands to speak to
you in Donegal and Dublin. Hanny Van Arkel, a school teacher and amateur
astronomer, is currently on a world tour, and will be explaining the one
million, million, million, miles wide object which she discovered. The object
has not yet officially been classified, but is thought to be the size of a
galaxy. It has been named 'Hanny's
Voorwerp' in her honour, and has baffled scientists and astronomers
alike since its discovery in 2008. Hanny will come to Ireland next
week to tell her story about this unknown object, what it is thought to be, and how
citizen science plays an important part in developing our understanding of the
universe.
Hanny will deliver her lecture for you in
two locations in Ireland:
- June 15, at 8pm, Trinity College Dublin.
To book your tickets click HERE.
- June 17, at 8pm, Letterkenny IT, Donegal.
To book your tickets click HERE.
Tickets are 7euro (non-members) or 5euro
(members and concessions).
Please book early as we may have to book a
larger theatre for the Dublin event.
There will be a reception with complimentary
food in The Lombard at 9:30pm, after the Dublin Lecture (see below).
CHARITY
EVENT
As you know, most
of our volunteers come from the Dublin area, and consequently we are trying
to add a social dimension to our monthly lectures. To this end, The Lombard have
been very good to us recently, providing complimentary food at our post-lecture
receptions since April. There will be a social reception at
9:30pm next Monday following Hanny's lecture. All are welcome to
attend.
Further to this,
the staff at The Lombard have kindly invited us to a charity event on Friday
evening, June 12, in aid of the Bubblegum Club for Kids. All are welcome to
attend, and there will be live music, promotions, spot prizes, food and,
fun! For more details about the charity, visit www.bubblegumclub.ie.
