1. 'Astronomy for Beginners'
Commence Tonight
Our extremely popular Evening Classes begin tonight, October 13th in Dublin. In all other locations nationwide they will begin next week, on Thursday, October 20th.
The classes are aimed at the beginner and cover everything you ever wanted to know about the Universe. There are eight classes in total and content covered includes an introduction to the night sky, the Sun and the Moon, planets and stars, history of astronomy, deep sky objects, the big bang and even a class on telescopes and how to use one.
2. Moon and Jupiter Blaze in Tonight's Sky
Tonight, after sunset, the Moon will rise over the eastern horizon at approximately 7pm. With it will be the stunningly bright planet Jupiter, which is currently at its closest to Earth, making it and the Moon the two brightest objects in the night sky. A map of this region of the sky can be found on our website HERE.
There is no need for any special equipment to see this - using your eyes give great views. However, if you have binoculars or a telescope, you will be able to see the cloud bands on Jupiter and its moons.
Conjunctions like this are particularly beautiful and attract lots of phone calls and emails to Astronomy Ireland from people wondering what they saw! Make sure you go outside tonight and take a look at this amazing celestial sight.
Remember to email your observation reports to observe@astronomy.ie so that we can include it in an upcoming issue of Astronomy & Space magazine.
3. Billion-Euro Satellite to be Named After Irish Child!
One very lucky Irish child will have one of the new European Galileo satellites named after them. The Galileo Project is Europe's answer to the USA's GPS system, and will consist of a network of Earth-orbiting satellites, worth a billion euro each! Two satellites have already been named 'Thijs' and 'Natalia', after children from Belgium and Bulgaria
Astronomy Ireland wants to get schools and children involved in the Galileo Drawing Competition and its out-of-this-world prize!
The competition is open to children age 9 – 12 years in each of the 27 EU Member States. Each child must submit a piece of artwork based on the theme ‘Space and Aeronautics’. Entrants can use any drawing, painting and colouring material and techniques they wish to.
But HURRY! To be in with a chance of winning this truly once
in a lifetime prize you must submit your entry by November
15th 2011.
