2. August
Lecture
On August 9th at 8pm, Dr. John Quinn
will enthral his audience on the subject of Gamma Ray astronomy. Gamma rays
are electromagnetic radiations of very high frequencies, that are associated
with black holes and collapsing supernovae. Recent research shows that
concentrated bursts from gamma rays can affect life on earth, especially
planktons in the ocean. He will also talk about cutting edge research
happening in his laboratory that might be beat the LHC in the race to the
Higgs-Boson.
Book your tickets at our lecture
page and read more about these dangerous gamma rays and how
they can affect us here.
3. Astronomy Tips
-
Plasma ejections from Sunday should
arrive at Earth early Wednesday morning, allowing for some spectacular auroras
at the higher latitudes.
-
The Dumbbell Nebula (M27 - NGC 6853)
is visible high in the night sky at the moment, so get your telescopes
ready!
-
Jupiter is the closest to
us for the next 12 years, so keep an eye out as it will be the
brightest object in the night sky.
-
For more information on what to see
in the night sky this week check out the
Sky Diary
section in the August issue of
'Astronomy &
Space' magazine.
Don't forget to email what
you see to
observe@astronomy.ie and we will
try to publish your pictures and observations in forthcoming issues of
the magazine.
