1. New Year Lecture: Mars:
Curiosity, Water, and Life
Will Curiosity find life on Mars? Maybe.
It cost $2.5 billion, took 8 years to build, and right now NASA's Curiosity is roving across Mars at the behest of 400 scientists. Curiosity is effectively a roving geo-chemist that hopes to find evidence for conditions to support life on Mars, at least in the past. It's a fascinating mission that is intriguing the general public.
In Astronomy Ireland’s special New Year Public Lecture, Dr Peter Grindrod from the University of London, will examine the rover's goals, which include the search for water on Mars and thus ultimately the search for life. He will present the most up to date results and breathtaking images from this most advanced mission so far to our near planetary neighbour.
