1. Astronomy Ireland Astro-Expo
Astronomy Ireland's annual Astro-Expo will take place this year on Saturday, November 19th in the SNIAM Building, Trinity College Dublin. We have an exciting line-up of guest speakers at this year’s event, namely
1:00pm - "The Complete Amateur Solar Observatory" By Dave Gradwell
Dave Gradwell has been observing the Sun for many years and his solar images are known worldwide. From his observatory near Birr he observes many aspects of solar activity, all of which are in reach of the amateur. This year he has accurately predicted 3 occurrences of the Northern Lights over Ireland. In this talk he will explain, how to observe the Sun through telescopes, capture solar flares as they happen, and observe the effect of the Sun's magnetic field on the Earth and as a result predict occurrences of the Northern Lights.
3:00pm – "Faster Than Light - Was Einstein Wrong?" Dr. Cormac O'Raifeartaigh
In September 2011, a group of scientists announced that they had observed subatomic particles travelling at speeds greater than the speed of light in vacuum. The finding has been met with great scepticism as it appears to be in conflict with Einstein’s theory of relativity. This lecture will describe the experiment and explain the grounds for scepticism
This year’s event will also feature DCU Physics Society who will demonstrate some interesting physics experiments and astrophotography workshops hosted by Carl O Beirnes.
There will be a variety of science and astronomy information stands and activities at this year’s event, if you or your business are interested in partaking as an exhibitor please contact us on (01) 890 11 11 or email sec@astronomy.ie
Admission to the exhibition is free, admission to the lectures cost 10euro (8euro member’s rate) for each lecture or 18euro (15euro member’s rate) for a day pass. As always, these lectures will be available for everyone in Ireland on DVD.

One very lucky Irish child will have one of the new European Galileo satellites named after them. The competition is open to children age 9 – 11 years in each of the 27 EU member states.
Each child must submit a piece of artwork based on the theme ‘space and aeronautics’. Entrants can use any drawing, painting and colouring material and techniques they wish to. But HURRY!
