1. Asteroid Discoverers to reveal secrets at
Astro-Expo
Our annual astronomy conference and exhibition for
everyone in Ireland takes place tomorrow in the prestigious Science
Gallery in Trinity College Dublin.
We are hoping every one of you from all over Ireland will descend on our
biggest annual get-together.
Astronomy Ireland will present the first ever public
talk by the Irish asteroid discovery team of David McDonald,
David Grennan and Andreas Doppler.
Internationally renowned space author Brian Harvey who will explain how
China is to beat NASA in the race to land a man/woman on the Moon in the next
decade.
NASA scientist Dr. James McAteer will give an exciting talk on
the volatile nature of the Sun using stunning images and video clips
from all the NASA spacecraft now monitoring our star 24 hours a
day
Tickets for the lectures cost only a few euro but the huge exhibition
running in parallel is absolutely free of charge to
everyone.
This year's impressive list of exhibitors include
Planetaria, observatories,
meteorites, telescopes (including the giant
CGE 1400 - like those used to discover the Irish
asteroids) and so much more!
It is well worth taking a trip to Dublin, plus you will get to meet
fellow astronomy and space enthusiasts from all around
Ireland.
This is a perfect day out for all the family with something for everyone
and is an event not to be missed.
Admission is free and lecture tickets can be booked
online at www.astronomy.ie or by phone
at (01) 847 0777.
Join us afterwards
in Kennedy's pub (at the corner of Westland Row and Lincoln Place beside
TCD) at 8pm to raise a toast to the asteroid discovery team and to have a chat
with fellow astronomy enthusiasts.
2. Astronomy Shop
SALE at Astro-Expo
Due to the
strengthening dollar prices of telescopes in Europe are rising, by up to
40%. However, the extremely low prices introduced for telescopes in our
Shop over the summer will be kept for one day only at Astro-Expo so come along
for the bargain of the year.
PLUS FREE
DELIVERY! : Order your telescope at the event and the 15euro
delivery charge will be waived.
3. 'Smoking Stars' Lecture & DVD in
conjunction with Science Week
Our November lecture in Trinity College Dublin will be
'Smoking Stars' by Armagh Observatory research astronomer Dr. Simon Jeffery. If you cannot get to the
lecture it will be recorded and made available on DVD for everyone in
Ireland.
It is well known that stars,
like most fires, emit light. What is less well known is that some stars also
emit soot which can block out sunlight from a star and
pollute the space around it.
Why are stars so dirty? How can a star be
turned inside out? How do stellar systems work? Dr. Simon Jeffery will be
answering these fascinating questions and much more.
4. Day Trip to Armagh
Planetarium
Our annual day trip to
Armagh Planetarium goes from strength to strength and this year is going to
be our most successful yet.
This year’s trip will be
better than ever with an exclusive ticket to the brand new Mars show that hasn’t
been opened to the public yet. See it first!
We also have a special
private guided tour of the observatory available just for us.
Don’t miss out on what promises to be a wonderful
