Star-B-Q 2010 - The Secrets of the Stones Astronomy Ireland will celebrate Ireland's ancient astronomers at this year's Star-B-Q as we announce our second speaker of the night. Anthony Murphy of Mythical Ireland will take guests on a tour of Ireland's ancient burial sites, including Newgrange, Knowth, and Dowth, and show how the mysterious Stone Age tombs were, in fact, colossal observatories built to observe the motions of the Sun and the Moon. Over the course of his talk, Anthony will speak about the ancient artwork inscribed on stones all over the country, how the Stone Age people of Ireland were master astronomers and why they linked astronomy with burial sites The Star-B-Q is Astronomy Ireland's biggest annual fundraiser, and will feature numerous talks from national and international speakers. Guests will be treated to a delicious barbecue served up by Michelin-experienced chefs. Some of Ireland's biggest and most powerful telescopes will be set up for everyone to use as they wish to explore the wonders of the Universe. The highlight on the night will be Jupiter, which is at its closest and brightest for 12 years, and the telescopes will reveal its cloud belts, vast storms, and moons At this Star-B-Q, which promises to be our biggest ever, guests will be treated to a top-quality barbecue cooked by a Michelin chef, before enjoying a series of special intriguing talks covering all aspects of astronomy and space, an array of telescopes to look through, junior section for children, evening entertainment, and Astronomy Ireland Shop displays.
