INVITATION TO ASTRONOMY IRELAND PUBLIC LECTURE FEB. 9 "The Enigma of the origin of life on Earth and the Question of Extraterrestrial Life; Facts and Fictions" by Prof R.N. Butler from the Chemistry Dept, NUI Galway on Monday February 9 at 8:00pm in the Henry Grattan Building, Dublin City University At a time when two rovers are scrutinising rocks on Mars for evidence for life sustaining conditions, this lecture that should satisfy your curiosity once and for all about how does life get started, where might it exist locally in our solar system and/or the rest of the universe. Prof Butler will: (i) critically assess the current state of knowledge on the origin of Life on Earth (ii) Assess the planetary bodies Mars, Europa, Titan and Triton from the point of view of Life and (iii) Comment on the prospects for Life elsewhere in the Universe in our space-time. The lecture will be at a 'popular level' and no chemical formulae or equations will be used.
