[Astronomy Ireland] Deep Space Art, Mars Lecture, Astrophysics Weekend
1. DEEP SPACE ART EXHIBITION, BIRR An exhibition of David Malin's astronomical photographs will be opened on Wednesday March 31 at 3pm in Birr Castle Demesne by the British Ambassador. You are all cordially invited. A group of us are travelling from Dublin if you want to meet up or car pool. The exhibition will then run for several weeks and is open 7 days a week 9am-6pm. David Malin is perhaps the world's best astrophotographer being a professional astronomer with access to giant professional telescopes. His images are stunning so the exhibition should be well worth travelling to see, and you can see the great 72inch telescope while you're there. Pass this notice on... 2. MARS LECTURE, ARMAGH On Thursday April 1st there is a public lecture "Mars: New Opportunities and Challenges for European Space Science" by Irishman Michael McKay who now works at the European Space Agency, ESTEC, The Netherlands. Mike was seen and heard on radio/TV when controlling ESA's Mars Express craft now safely mapping the red planet from orbit. It's at 8pm in The Rotunda Lecture Theatre, St Patrick's Trian, Armagh. Admission is free, but by ticket only: contact Aileen at Armagh observatory ambn@arm.ac.uk I hope to be there, let me know if anyone else is going? 3. ASTRONOMY & ASTROPHYSICS IN IRELAND, ARMAGH The ASGI (Astronomical Science Group of Ireland) is the all Ireland body for astronomy researchers in Ireland north and south. It holds 2 gatherings each year which will be of interest to Astronomy Ireland members who want to come and hear professional astronomers in Ireland presenting their work to their colleagues. The Spring 2004 ASGI meeting is special as the normally 1-day ASGI meeting is extended into a full weekend and is being run in co-operation with IOPI (the Institute of Physics in Ireland). The programme for the 3 days (Friday April 2 to Sunday April 4) is available at http://ireland.iop.org/weekend.html and all events take place in St. Patrick's Trian, Armagh. Friday sessions include: Solar and Stellar Astrophysics; Astrophysical Jets; High-Energy Astrophysics. Then on Saturday it's: Astronomy of the Solar System; Optics and Astronomical Instrumentation. On Sunday it's: Physics and Astronomy Education and Public Outreach (should be of interest to all AI members). I hope to get along Saturday and Sunday. Anyone else going?
