Ahoy gang, I made a slight goof regarding the musical callbacks... Some of you have received emails inviting you to come to callbacks today at 6pm. I had previously said that if you didn't receive an email, then you weren't in the show. Ooops. Some parts have in fact already been cast! Those lucky few who have been cast already have NOT been informed by email. This is because we want to post the entire cast list at the same time. ..which means that if you didn't receive an email you either didn't make the show OR you have definitely been cast! Eeek. The full cast list will be posted on the announce-drama mailing list by the end of the week :) BUT if you have not been cast in a definite role, fret not! We will be needing extras, chorus members and backstage help, as well as set painters, promotional helpers, makeup people, band members, prop helpers, and all manner of randomness. [Drama-alumni] This Week: Clubs & Socs Day 2 & more...

Ahoy all you intrepid DramaHeads! ALL MY SONS: ...was performed on three nights last week to great critical acclaim in the Venue. Fantastic performances were turned in by the entire cast, and the audience loved it. Given that Arthur Miller plays tend not to be the happiest, it was a testament to the talent of the cast and the vision of director Fiona Colhoun that the show was so well received... Loads of stuff going on this week... MUSICAL CALLBACKS: First off, well done to all those who came over to the auditions for this year's musical, "Guys and Dolls." The turnout was massive! Unfortunately, not all of those who tried out were successful in getting a callback. We would love to put all of you in the show, but that would necessitate a stage the size of Texas. Those of you who got a callback have already been informed via email. Those of you that did not, I'm sorry :( Callbacks will be held on Wednesday (15th) evening at 6.00pm in XG14. Good luck! THE MERCHANT OF VENICE: Ha! Just when you thought that you were safe from another DCU Drama production, we come out with a little Shakespeare! The Merchant of Venice will run during week 3 from Monday 20th - Thursday 23rd at 7.00pm in the Space, the Helix, with matinees at 2pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets are a bargain bin price of 5 euro for DCU Drama members and 7 euro for anybody else. After the runaway success of our production of Macbeth last year, "Merchant" promises to continue DCU Drama's budding infatuation with the great Bard of Avon. Don't miss it! Watch out for our ticket stand in the HUB this week! Speaking of ticket stands, we need volunteers to man the aforementioned ticket stands, and to help out with promotional duties during next week. CLUBS AND SOCS DAY II: THE REVENGE! Yup, that's right. As if you didn't have enough back in October, with Clubs and Socs Day, it's back! We'll be setting up our recruitment stand in the Venue on WEDNESDAY 15th and need a selection of rabid volunteers to come and help sign up the last few students in DCU who haven't already joined Drama. Drop me a line at chair(a)dcudrama.ie to lend a hand... WORKSHOPS: Bob will be holding an informal VOCAL PROJECTION AND DICTION workshop in the Space, the Helix at 1pm on Sunday the 19th. While this is primarily for the cast members of The Merchant of Venice, all who are interested are welcome to attend. Cost: FREE. This workshop will be invaluable to any budding actor - projection and diction are the two most important attributes you can have. You can know your lines backwards and have great presence and movement, but if no-one can hear you / understand what you're saying, you're outta luck. Another similar and larger workshop will be held in week 6 by our friends from the Gaiety School of Acting, prior to the Musical. Watch this space... We will also be holding a MAKEUP workshop in the next few weeks, again prior to the musical. One of our members, Liana, has kindly agreed to offer a quick course in stage makeup for anyone that is interested. Once more, watch this space! RedBrick Tech Week is coming, and because DCU Drama love getting into bed with RedBrick, we will be jointly offering LIGHTING and SOUND workshops for any budding techies out there. ...and so we all made it back from New York in one piece, thank (insert deity of your choice here). It was a mindblowing experience, and as soon as I get around to it, there'll be a write-up going onto the website, complete with about 400 photos! Yay! THIS WEEK: ALL MY SONS: ...will be showing in the Venue in the HUB, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 7.30pm this week (7/8/9th Feb). Arthur Miller's angst-ridden family drama, set in the 1940's Midwest America, features some astounding performances and is not to be missed! Tickets 4 euro or 5 for non-members of DCU Drama. Don't miss it! MUSICAL AUDITIONS: This year it's GUYS AND DOLLS and will be going on in the Venue in week 8, starting 27th March... [Drama-alumni] Scholarship and other opportunities

Hi all, Hope the new year is looking bright for you! Just in case you're looking for something to get involved with in 2006, here's two things to get you thinking... the first is a Scholarship opportunity, the second is a voluntary youth group. *1. Rotary Scholarship* As some of you may know, a few months ago I was lucky enough to be awarded a Rotary Scholarship. Whenever I tell people about it, their reaction is always "How did I not hear of this before?!!" Well, it's true, not enough people *do* hear about it. And as most of you lovely people would be ideal candidates, that's just not right :) So here goes... The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship is a phenomenal year-long €26,000 scholarship to study anything, anywhere in the world, as long as it furthers international goodwill and will in some way contributes to global understanding and development. There's an equal emphasis on your study results, and the difference you make while over there - you are expected to take on community or voluntary work, learn about your host country, and generally be a good Ambassador for Ireland. The group that fund it is Rotary International ( www.rotary.org ), which is basically a global voluntary organisation that aims to find ways to serve the community, whether that be locally or internationally. Their byword is "Service above self", which sums it up. At the same time its a very social organisation, so they meet up regularly, plan events and fundraisers, and consider everyone within Rotary a friend they haven't yet met. When you go to your host country, you'll be met there by Rotararians who help you find accomodation, settle in, and learn about the place. If you're interested in applying, the first place you should look is here: http://www.rotary.org/foundation/educational/amb_scho/index.html The application form contains quite a bit to think about - where you'd like to go, why you feel you'd be an asset to Rotary, how the Scholarship will help you achieve whatever it is you want in life... Once you've done that, you should give me a shout and I can explain it all in more detail. The application deadline is in June, and there are a few other steps that need to be taken around then, but I can talk you through all that. I'll have more information and resources online later in the year (when I get a spare minute!). Bear in mind it is awarded a year in advance, so if you were applying this June, you wouldn't be going abroad until *August/ September 2007*. I can't begin to explain what an opportunity it is, I really can't. Rotary is such a welcoming organisation, and even the application process was such a learning experience. If you think you're interested, I'll bend over backwards to help you out. They only award one Scholarship annually in Ireland, so you'll need to have a very good idea of what it's all about and why you'd make a strong candidate. One of the ways you might like to do this is by getting involved in Rotaract. What is Rotaract, I hear you say? Aha...! *2. Rotaract* Looking for something to get involved in? (Especially all you old society hacks!) The best way to describe Rotaract is that it's like a society for after college! It's the Youth (18-30) branch of Rotary, and it has much the same aims: Personal development, voluntary service, meeting new people, trying new things... a bit like a cross between SVDP and AIESEC :) Although there is a lot of centralised support, every Rotaract club sets its own agenda. So one club might run a musical fundraiser, another might organise guest speakers, or run an international project or stage a debate. www.rotaract.org.uk/ealing is an example of one club in the UK and what they do. There are Rotaract clubs all around the world, but in Ireland it's only taking off. There's one club in Dublin at the moment, but there's a nationwide team being assembled and Rotary clubs around the country are looking to set up Rotaract clubs. Ahoy Dramaheads! This week: It's all about the panto! Babez in da Hood, our hilarious panto, is showing tonight at 7.30 and on Wednesday at 5.30 in the venue. It opened yesterday to thunderous applause & laughter, and is the funniest thing you'll ever see. Ever. So get along to the Venue tonight and see what all the fuss is about! WED, 8pm: DCU DRAMA/REDBRICK/MUSIC SOC CHRISTMAS PARTY! After the panto ends on Wednesday night, we've got a monster party! Live music, Santa WITH presents, all manner of madness, and it's all happening in the Venue from 8pm! Tickets are ridiculously cheap - if you go to the panto and hold on to your ticket, you'll get in for just €2!! Beat that. ...and that's it. Have a great week! Hey Aideen Cat here - and you're not the only one that left Ireland straight from college. Was living in NYC a while, but now I'm pretty settled in London for the last year and a half and working as a consultant for JPMorgan. You'll have to let me know when you're gigging in London next so we can meet up and reminisce on the good ol' days. Found a fantastic drama group in the city - they're great fun - altho can never compare with good old DCU Drama) and just finished my second musical over here, Dames At Sea there last Saturday so I'm all drama-d up at the moment and trying to recover from a mental week. Any other drama heads in the UK? I've been getting all nostalgic recently... probably the realisation that it has in fact been 2 whole years since I left Ireland- that's a reasonable chunk of time... and I don't have any immediate plans to come back (which is really scarey!) But the arts scene over here is just so big and vibrant and full of opportunities that I can't imagine ever having in Ireland... Hmm... any thoughts anyone? I've been keeping in touch with my national identity however- in the most tradtional of ways- by working in a (proper) Irish pub! Nice old place run by a couple from Cork and Kerry- lots of music and drinking (we sell lots of tayto and magners/bulmers to the legions of Irish pharmacy students?!) http://thebugleinn.blogspot.com/ is where all the news is- you can see me on the entry on the 30 June! [Drama-alumni] Results of One Act Wonder Festival!

Ahoy Campers! The 3rd Annual One Act Wonder Festival wrapped up tonight over at St. Patrick's, and what a night it was for DCU Drama! Our two plays, "The Play's the Thing" and "The Breakfast Club" were performed on Monday night to tumultuous applause - well done to all of our actors, directors and helpers. Thursday night saw a change of pace, with workshops and snippets of shows to come! Our intrepid cast of the forthcoming production of "All My Sons" performed a powerful excerpt from the show on the night, which was very well received. The very first Intervarsity performance of the increasingly popular "Whose Line is it Anyway?" was a great success, with our own Bob as MC, and the fabulous Eoin O Callaghan representing DCU. The cast was rounded out by Eddie (DIT), Conor (St. Pat's) and Anne-Marie (Mater Dei). For a group that met for the first time half an hour before the show, the magic happened and the sparks flew! After the fun and games, we retired to the Cat & Cage for an uproarious Awards Ceremony... ...and what a ceremony it was! DCU Drama walked away on the night with FIVE awards! Our haul in full: BEST DIRECTOR: Aislinn O Loughlin, "The Play's the Thing" - the judges were unanimous in their praise for the entire play, and heaped glory on the lovely Ashi! JUDGES SPECIAL AWARD: "Whose Line is it Anyway?" - for the zaniest and wackiest improv show seen this side of the real thing. BEST ACTOR (PRETENDING TO BE AN ACTOR): Gary Furlong, "The Play's the Thing" - for his bumbling, spoonerism-tastic turn as Harold. BEST APPLICATION OF LIPSTICK: Kitty Boyle, "The Breakfast Club" - who managed to apply a perfect coating without the use of her hands! (Use your imagination) BEST SLAP: Siobhan Hickey, "All My Sons" - who nearly knocked Bob to the floor and drew gasps from the audience! A very well done to all involved - Ashi, Dave, Mark, Gary, Bob, Kitty, Laura x2 (Heading & Whitmore), Dallan, Abi, Phil, Joe, Eoin, Siobhan and Peter, and of couse all of you who came along to cheers us on! Aha! So there are people I know out there!! Lovely to know that you're all still alive and kicking- and yes- I'm sure you're all making a scene :) Well- I'm still playing the oul' drums- been playing with quite a few bands around Brighton and London (I've been based in Brighton for 2 years) and I've been doing some really wicked gigs- including- oh yes- Glastonbury!
