I have read through every thing in this preopsal and this is how I see it.
>The major Budget costs I see at present are as follows:
>Marketing Costs:
>-Design Costs . . ..
> -Posters . . . I already have a rough draft of the Poster done in PPT
>(see separate enclosure)
> This can be touched up, detail added and taken to >printers
> -Flyers ? we can print these in-house
All the above are fine, this will be done at a max of ?50
> -Media ? approach local Newspapers & Radio
(is this nessary as the venue in the hub only holds 250 people and to go
public will cost an awful lot . Newspaper advertisements can cost anywhere
from 100-1000 euro)!!!
>Production Costs:
> -Fees (Director ? no cost)
>(Producer & Designer ? if outside personnel, -Fee to be agreed with Dramsoc)
We would not be wiling to pay for external procution costs (pro.producers
can cost up to 5000 euro). We would encourage members of the society to
get involved and get experience in these areas....that what we're here for.
> -Set ? the 4? x 12? stage sections in the venue could be used as main
>stage
> - A circular cistern to be built in the middle
maybe you could contact art soc and see if they are willing to look into
this as a project.
>- Steps would be built up on 3 sides to the front
you know what stair cases we have to work with and building more will be
a huge cost up to 1500 euro.
>- The stage entrance would consist of building 8? high frames
>- I have a rough stage plan but it would need to be drawn to scale!
>(Rough cost ?400)
if you have quotes for this great but to just assemble a stage costs 300
euro.
this will have to be taken into considertion.
>-
>-Costumes ? its proposed we ask Musical groups to hire costumes
>- Failing that I have costume designs, we buy the material & make
can you sow?
material is nearly as expencive as renting but I am in favour of doing these
things ourselves however getting capable people to sow is often a hardship.
dress makers charge approx 80 euro per garment depending on the detail you
want in the costumes and we are only prepaired to go down this route if
it is a last option and only for a very select number of costumes.
>-Makeup ? use Dramsoc makeup (?20 to restock)
You obviously dont wear makeup ;)
its very expencive and 20 euro might only buy foundation!
we have always asked actors to supply their own makeup unless speciality
makeup is required (eg one year we make a white guy black to look like a
young michael jackson for a show)
>-Props ? a full props list is enclosed separately
>- The major area of concern @ the moment is making the Severed Head -
>any ideas?
to get a prop like this made will cost up to 500 euro but art soc might
be intrested, if not I might know a few people that might do it for just
he cost of the materials.
>- Soldiers weapons can be made
or the pound shop or even ask fencing club for a loan.
>-Lighting /Sound - blue lighting Gels & scrim (rough cost ?80)
> - I have the sound CD
>- I character mick?d up
>-Royalties ? Royalties do not have to be paid on Oscar Wile performances
that a looks fine.
Total Expenditure ?1,200 - ?1,400??
The thing about drama soc is that each person who decides to take on a production
is 100% responcible for ever aspect unless they themselves find someone
else to share responcibility (ie find a producer, a costume designer etc...).
dcu drama is a society ful of people looking for experience and we would
expect you to write a letter to the membership which we would then send
out on your behalf. If you feel that it is a big undertaking then you can
even look into the posibility of getting togeather a little committee to
look after things like promotion and prop finding. Any help you need if
you get really stuck the committee are there to help but as you can see
from the provisional calander we have a lot to oversee this year so we dont
handel the running of each individual show, thats for the producer and director
of each show to handel by themselves as best they can and we are there as
a source of information to help you do things yourself.
>If this show is to be put on we have to look closely at the Timescale required.
>It was mentioned at the meeting to put play on for Arts Week ? wk starting
>17th Nov. This Timescale in my opinion is too short. This might be possible
>with an experienced crew. Can the production team actually put the show
that >is being described? ? Salome together in that short time??? . Not
knowing the >work of Dramsoc you would have to answer that one yourselves!!
>Also some complex characterisations will need a good deal of rehearsal.
>I propose we aim for week 10 (wk starting 1st Dec.) & put show on in >Space,
Helix or alternatively week 11 (wk starting 8th Dec.) & put show on >in
Venue!
If you feel that putting the show on soon will be a problem then there's
always semester two.We are allocated one week in the helix every year and
we take it for the experience but the Helix take 50% of our ticket sales
instead of charging us a fee as it is the newest and most expencive theatre
in Ireland. If you really wanted to put on a show in the Helix then heavy
sponcership would be required and you would be expected to source this yourself
or someone from your production crew and if you could aquire this funding
we would then pull whatever strings we could for you to get you the best
price we can.
How many weeks rehersal do you intend on putting on?
you must take into consideration that 4 weeks is the standard rehersal time
expected of a short play (under an hour long) and anything more than this
will put people off as they tend to get bored with it after this length
of time.
The musical usually takes 6-7 weeks of proper rehersal and it is the biggest
show of the year.

>Production Team
>Does Dramsoc have sufficient experience in Design? There's no point assigning
>someone to do the job of set design if they have no practical construction
>experience and knowledge.
This is an amature production society and we are here so that people without
experience can achieve it.
DCU drama is a *society* not a company. We have students studying communication
, multimedia, science and lots more and all of these people have talents
that can be sourced and used to help in your production. We always hire
someone to construct the set for health and saftey reasons but if you have
a large set in mind it will be costly and all the design will have to be
done beforehand.
>Producer
>At the moment I do not have a Producer in mind. Am dependent on Dramsoc
to >identify Producer who will organise and chair regular production meetings
>between the production team to ensure smooth progression. The Producer
would >also be responsible for the allocation and organisation of play Budgets.
I have commented on the role of the producer and how you may aquire one
but we dont hire professional people to help out on ameture prodcuctions.
I know you are trying to do this as efficiently as possible but if you require
people then it is from within the membership they will be obtained as that
is what this society is all about. We will forward any corrospondance you
wish to send to the membership and we hope that you will recieve a large
responce as there are so many with previous expierence itching to take part.
It will be up to you to pick whoever you deem most suitable for the role.
>Director
>I, Ger Considine would be responsible for directing the play and would
have a >major input into the overall LAF (Look & Feel) of the show. Being
the >originator of this play proposal I would see myself concentrating more
on the >actors and movement of the play rather that trying to organise the
entire >show.
>Choreographer
>The director would require a Choreographer to take charge of Salome?s Dance
>scene that occurs on stage. The Choreographer would work with director
to >ensure movement fits in with his ideas & intentions.
Dance soc have a great number of expierenced dancers who would be willing
to help you out here as well as our own members who have had dance expierence.
A choreoghrapher would have to be obtained the same way as a producer.

Budgeting
The expenditure quoted above is probably overestimated but better to err
on the side of caution!
Expenditure
Main areas of expenditure are as follows:
Performance Rights: Free on this occasion!
Publicity: The Publicity budget should be given high priority
? No Publicity => No Income
? Posters
? 100xA4 prints = ?15.00
100xA3 prints = ?30.00
? ~ ?50 should cover Radio, Papers etc
? Publicity budget also used for FOH items & Publicity Photos
Sets / Staging: Unable to give an exact cost on this but I have a Chippie
contact that will build the set. A competent stage designer should be able
to give a rough costing of how much the materials for the show will cost.
**************************
connections that can build...I like it, the money that would normally pay
him can then be used elsewhere.
**************************
Props: Props can be made up & the expenditure here is minimal
Making of the severed Head might pose a slight problem!
See full list of Props enclosed.
Lighting: If play is being staged in the Space, Lighting will not be an
issue.
***************************
if you get funding to hire out the space that is the costs will include
the 450 euro to hire one of their own technitians as they are very protective
of their equipment and insist that one of their people are onhad at all
times.
***************************
If staged in the Venue we?ll have to go with less sophisticated lighting
plan
Costumes: Ideally this show requires full period costume, which would have
to be hired. It is proposed though that the costumes be made so the budget
will need to cover the cost of purchasing the material. Do Dramsoc have
any stock material?
The expenses should never exceed the expected income, which brings us to
. . .
Income
Tickets
Income will come primarily from ticket sales
Having formally worked in the PR Area I would be able to offer valuable
input on publicity inside & outside the College. It is not unfeasible for
a popular, well-known show like Salome with a large cast to get in excess
of 100 audience per night. The price of tickets should be set with students
in mind, and not be overly expensive. It may be possible to use the Dress
Rehearsal as a Preview night and invite members of the press!
Sponsorship
Sponsorship is a good avenue for income although it may be a little late
at this stage to approach companies. Having said that a number of our electronic
component vendors are interested in our activities and could be approached.
Sponsorship can also be sought from various funds within College.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
all exhausted!
its not too late if you look to put it on in the second semester.
Program
It is envisaged that a proper program would be done up and printed.
Money can be made from selling adverts in the program.
again sponsorship is essential. I sugest you look for someone to help you
get sponsorship for this event on your own.
Merchandising
T-Shirts for the show can act as good publicity, and a small mark-up of
a ?uro or so can quite happily be made on them, a large-ish cast and crew
means that you can make maybe £50 on merchandise.
*************************************
t-shirts are very expensive to get made. Approx ten euro each and students
wont pay this to be honest. Drama soc are only charging 6 euro for their
t-shirts.
*************************************
Union Grant
I am not altogether ofe with the internal Grants that are available but
they should contain a small amount of money to underwrite and assist College
productions.
you can always look into this.
