hey guys, im interested in doing a small arty play called 'The Shape of things' by an american playwright Neil La Bute. i've seen it twice, once professional and once by amateur studnets....its very minimal in that it requires next to nthng in set, props, and only 4 actors, 2 guys and 2 grls...its a very contemporary, american play and deals with how the line between art and life can blur. im interested in producing and directing but i need a little help..maybe an asistant director...also whts the deal with licencing etc? and where can i get my hands on a script...might need to make a few adjustments. let me knw if u can help, it'd be very much appreciated. thanks arsheen ps: chris said he'd help out organising it, but i still need an assistant who's been in drama soc and knws his way abt dcu drama world!

[Drama-committee] EMERGENCY meeting RE: musical

I'm sorry if this is too short notice be we need an emergency meeting with as many of the committee as possible tonight (6.30 before we leave for the show) or tomorrow at lunch time (we can talk to medb and mags individually before then if this is better so as to have their opinions). Its about the helix, whether or not to go into it. I'm putting the details here on the list to save time explaining later. helix's proposal : they take the first 7500 of ticket sales, we take the next 2000 and we split the rest 70/30 to us. not too bad a deal coming from their point of view in that this covers for them staff up to 2500, sound equipment up to 800 and the rest is rental which is usually 2500 per night. The proposal I want to send them is : They take the first 6000, this includes staff costs of 1800 (he tried to rape us on this point, this is paying them 20 euro an hour and yes there is no getting around this). and they get a rental fee of 4200 for the week. We take the next 2500 of ticket sales and we cover the cost of equipment hire which I BELIEVE we can get down to below 500 and anything over 8500 we slpit 60/40 to us which I believe will cover our costs and make it appealing to the helix to agree to. They will not allow us to rape them just because they dont have anyone else in there to take if off our hands and if we abuse this fact we loose any chance of future generations getting in there which would be a huge shame. Having spoken to Riona and Paul they do not agree that the Helix should be taking any cut after the initial takings which have yet to be passed but I disagree because its not going to make a huge difference in the long run and it looks alot more inviting to them and hopefully they will look favourably on drama soc and make this available an available option to the committee to come. This is what your opinion is needed on. Do either of these deals look ok and is the majority of us happy with going into the helix. My vote is a yes to my proposal. What say you? Having worked on the budget, 2000 from ticket sales will be close, 2500 should keep us afloat provided the preident gives us 2000, the spc gives us 5000 and the programme gets us 1200 ( approx 12 ads at 100 each) Any more money we can guarantee will enable us to modify the set and I think the president should be asked for a minimum of 2500 to allow us to do just this. Pleeeeese think about this and reply in a mail.

'The Importance of Being Earnest' on Friday week (the 5th of March, 8pm) at the Project Theatre, Temple Bar. I already mentioned this at the meeting, but just a reminder: we have 3 complementary tickets (If you like, you could even put up a ticket or two as a prize at the raffle), and I asked that 9 more be kept for us (e5 each for students). Just tell me exactly how much of this, if any, will be subsidised so I can post the news to the mailing list with a price estimate for the remaining 9. The only problem with collecting money (albeit a very small amount) is that tickets are kept for us, i.e. I don't have them in my hands to give to people. Perhaps if I get the mail out by tomorrow I can confidently guage interest, get monies from dramasoc, then get the tickets from Mark over the week-end and sell them next week. Incidentally, I know this is small potatoes in comparison to current developments with the musical, but what's the update on that cheque being sent to Mark Lynam-Loane? It's good PR if that's all resolved by the time I see him next. On another matter, I've hit a brick wall with Arsheen Qasim's play, as the reply from Drama League of Ireland explains. I've said that if she has anything else in mind, I'll check it out. In the meantime, workshop/auditions for 'lovers' is Monday & Tuesday (everybody come!). Hi Nick Further to our meeting with you on Tuesday about the provisional contract, we have held a meeting of the full drama committee to discuss the issue. We regret to inform you that the budget for the musical as it stands cannot support the extra costs incurred by holding it in the Helix. According to our projected revenue/ income breakdown, the only contract we could afford would be along the following lines: A 2500 flat fee for the Hire Wages for crew up to 1800 Our breakdown for the crew costs is as follows: 4 staff x Sunday at 20 euro an hour for 10 hours = 800 2 staff x monday at 20 euro an hour for 10 hours = 400 1 staff x (tues. wed. thurs) x at 20 euro an hour x 5 hours (7-12) = 300 1 staff x friday x 20 euro an hour x 6 hours (7-1) = 120 1 staff x friday x 20 euro an hour x hours x3 hours(just the move out) = 60 totalling 1680 (If there are any miscalculations in our figures please let us know) This figure of 4300 would be from first call on ticket takings. We would not be asking the Helix to cover any of our equipment hire costs. Apart from purely financial difficulties, there are also some other technical problems that have become clearer to us after talking to a number of ex-members and technical crew. Although the get-in time is quite tight, but possibly manageable, the get-out time (two hours after the last show on the Friday night) is not physically possible. The set we have requires a minimum of 20 hours to set up and roughly 8 hours to take down. Also, the lack of intelligent lighting means that our lighting director cannot go ahead with some of his plans for the lighting design, and while this is not a major problem in itself, it adds to the list of problems we have to consider when making a decision on this. We realise that this is significantly different from the contract we were discussing with you, but at this time, it is all that DCU Drama can offer the Helix. We appreciate the time and effort you have made available to us, and while we would love to use the Helix, we understand that this may not be possible. DIT Drama Festival 2004 Just pick a play and away we go! D.I.T. have already given us 3 complementary tickets for a night of our choice, so...Earnest, anyone? The DIT Drama Festival takes place from the 23rd Febrary until 6th March 2004. The title of Best Event 2003 is a lot to live up to, but all signs point to a more sucessful year than ever. The Venue is once again The Project Theatre in TempleBar. We have doubled our run to two weeks, but do arrive early to avoid dissappointment. All shows start at 8:00pm.
