Hey everyone, Hope ye're all recovered from Thursday (Steve, ya seriously missed out!) Anyway, I just wanted to direct everybody's attention to the forums on the life.dcu.ie. There's one especially for Drama Soc and I think it'd be cool if we got people to post to it pretty regularly and let us know what they think is good, bad or whatever about Drama this year. I know we have that dinky little message board on the web-site but NOBODY uses that except for weird people spamming about poker websites. Also, I don't think we can even moderate that message board and the life.dcu.ie. In this show Andrew Dawson explores the relationship with his father after he had died and lay in his house undiscovered for ten days. Its a very quiet and simple work but one of the most touching and beautiful shows I've seen in a while. Super tender and sensous. Please go and see it. PS: I dont make this kind of recommendations often. A Trinity of Two is one of Ulick O'Connor's most rated plays. It tells the story of an encounter between two great Dubliners, Oscar Wilde and Edward Carson. Patrick Bergin will play Edward Carson and Adrian Dunbar will play Oscar Wilde. Both actors were interested in the new perspective they have gained on these two men through reading O'Connors play. Bergin has said "Edward Carson is a very complex and paradoxical figure. Dunbar was intrigued to find out more about Wilde as he grew up in Enniskillen where Wilde had attended school. In conjunction with the Arts Council, and Siren Productions' new production of Titus Andronicus (premiering in the Project theatre in December), internationally acclaimed theatre designer and consultant Jean-Guy Lecat is planning to host a workshop in Dublin on 'Adapting a Space to Modern Theatre Practice'. This workshop will be open to students and young professionals engaged in architecture, set design, directing or similar areas. The workshop will be held in Dublin from the 7th - 11th November, from 10am - 6pm daily. This is a free course, and basic materials will be supplied. In this workshop, lead by internationally acclaimed theatre consultant and designer Jean-Guy Lecat, participants will explore the nature and qualities of the performance space. In theatre, "that which favours concentration is right, that which hinders it is not" (Peter Brook). Theatrical space must be a source of energy, whilst acting as a catalyst and vehicle for the imagination. How does modern theatrical practice translate into physical space? This workshop seeks to investigate: � What dimensions should be given to this imaginative space? � How can we find a form for an ideal theatrical arena in the existing spaces today? � What form of space can best encourage a beneficial relationship with the actors and facilitate an enjoyable and educational theatrical experience for the audience? � How can the technical risks - which are a necessary part of the creative process - be taken without jeopardising the production? � Should those who occupy and utilise the space understand and develop their own space? In this context of continual movement, what is the role of the architect? The theme text for this workshop will be Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus as directed for Siren Productions by Selina Cartmell, who will be discussing the text as part of the workshop. There will also be field trips to various Dublin theatres to view working theatre spaces. Over the course of the 5 days, participants will be split into small mixed groups. Each group will transform a given space with paper (they may also add their own materials, such as small pieces of wood, paintings, photos, projections or videos) or to create a model box based on their experiments. There are 20 places available on this course. This is a free workshop, and basic materials will be provided (participants may supply their own additional materials.) Both designers have worked extensively in their fields, and are both also highly involved in the practical production of the work, and in the subsequent touring of productions. Each course will focus on the practicalities of translating a designer's initial ideas into a satisfactory reality, while working successfully with the director, other designers and crew. The lighting course will also give an introduction to drafting programs such as Max Lux Pro and Softplot 3D, and the set course will give the participants the opportunity to conceive and/or develop a design during the week. As part of its Feis Ceol week long celebration of all things Irish, O'Neill's will now transport a slice of the festival atmosphere back into its pubs in the UK. This year Livingston, the winner of O'Neill's recent national Battle of the Bands competition, performed in The Ambassador Theatre at the Fringe's Uncut event as part of their prize. The five piece band will now tour O'Neill's during Feis Ceol . Livingston owe their unique and edgy sound to their global origins, with members hailing from as far apart as South Africa, Italy and Germany. Their music resonates influences from rock, indie and world music and has earned praise from industry experts from NME, Q and Fender. Alongside Livingston, two other critically acclaimed acts from Ireland will be performing 'fresh from the fringe' at selected O'Neill's - Jaded Sun and Kudos. Jaded Sun are a Dublin based guitar band who have been stamping their own unique brand of rock'n'roll on the Irish music scene since forming in early 2002. As well as reaching number one in the CPU Records Artists' chart, their EP has also received critical acclaim, being play-listed across Ireland and picking up rave reviews from the Irish music press. Committee... I want to book this theatre trip to see Aladdin the Pantomime in The Gaiety Theatre for the Wed 14th of December? Maybe like a 'DCU Drama Christmas day out?' The lady says it'll be €22 each, but a 10% discount if we get more than 20. Also, i have yet to sweet talk her so maybe a bit cheaper. Just does anyone think we should go to it in January instead or what, ya know with christmas shopping and all that shite? (Note- If ya wanna buy me something- i look great in black... and lace... so, use your imagination...) SHELLY- I have the memory of a fish (a forgetful fish at that) would you mind e-mailing me the list of all our volunteers for helping out in the panto? Thanks, also a meeting of minds needs to be arranged!!! SHANE- Could we meet friday to sort out which part your playing in this Pantomime? Say at two? ...well, maybe more than a few. Better sit down, and perhaps grab a cuppa. You're gonna be reading for a while. And please read all the way to the end - Monday's meeting was quite truncated and the only meeting we've had where the full committee was present thus far was the EGM, which doesn't really count. And we have a lotta shit to deal with. First things first: ROCKY HORROR: As of this moment, we have 96 tickets sold, and under Shane's estimates, another 24 covers our costs for the show. Yayness! Conor Farrell has asked me to reserve 5 for him for tomorrow, and many people have told me "ah, sure I'll get one off you tomorrow," the usual shite. For various reasons, the prop shopping was NOT done today, but Jay assures me that he has a handle on it, and will get it done tomorrow. We have about 30 working water pistols - do we need to buy more?? Lemme know what you all think. Soon, so that we can pass the word along to Jay. He will cover what needs to be covered out of his own pocket, and I've told him to keep receipts. Ashley Ridiculousfuckinglongsurname is going with him. Jay is also sorting out the screen and projector for about 5.30 ish, and ASSURES me that he knows exactly how to set it up for the show. The union have asked me if they can use it when we are done, to show horror movies. Given that we probably won't be finished before 11.30, I reckon they'll squeeze in one movie and I can't see it being a problem. I'll be out in the HUB at 10am to sell tickets, sorry about today. I was off in a bloody lecture before I realised that the tickets and money box were locked into my room. Ooops. Even though we didn't start selling until 2pm today, we still sold about 30 tickets. We get in there all day tomorrow and we could flog off our entire allotment. Result! Mind you, I can't stay at the desk all day, so will be looking for help :) There's lots of toilet paper, rice and a big box of slutty costumes in the equipment room. We seperated them from the rest when we tidied the room. We'll need all hands on deck from about 5.30 - 6ish tomorrow. There's a lot of prep work to be done for the RHPS, especially loading the goodie bags. I've asked Jay to have a look for lots of cheap popcorn for tomorrow night too. Eoghan has sorted out a projector and screen for the script, we can keep them overnight, but I would reccommend that we NOT leave them in the Venue. My gaff will do nicely. We need two laptops - we can show the movie on mine, but need another for the script-projector combo. As for rehearsals, here's the deal. About 10 people turned up to Monday night's screening, and a grand total of zero to this afternoon's. But that's fine. It'll be more of a case of the crowd coming in and having a complete laugh than doing an organised RHPS thing. But what the hell. I'm thinking if we sort of lead the way, they'll get the idea, especially with the abuse-hurling... Because it's the Halloween Ball, more people will be wandering in and out of the Venue throughout the night, as opposed to being there specifically for the RHPS. Meh. In terms of needing a ticket, that's a bit of a tricky issue. As of now we have plenty of tickets to spare (to do with as we wish etc), so I'm thinking that we should just give a freebie to committee members (so we all officially have a ticket to the ball) and perhaps Jay too, seeing as he has done so much in John's absence. OTHER STUFF: BROADWAY: Carol Cohen at bestofbroadway.com <http://bestofbroadway.com> has emailed me to say that the Spamalot tix are waiting for us at the box office. She has yet to receive the other two payments though, and is getting a bit impatient. When were they mailed? I figured they would take 5 days, which means if they were mailed last Wednesday, she should have got them today, or tomorrow at the latest. I've been in contact with the Hostel and they have booked 3 x 10 bed dorms for us - it's the only way we are guaranteed not to have to share with complete strangers, but it does mean that there will be 9 girls and 1 bloke in one of the rooms. Who's the lucky fella? Total cost: $3,840, which is going on MY credit card :( SOCS BALL TIX: Shane, you the man on this issue. Charlie asked me to ask you if you had a ticket for him. I don't know if you had already factored in the committee when doing your maths or what, so let us know. Pleeeease! Cheers. BLOODY MUSICAL: I spoke briefly with Lennox today, and she said that the music that they receieved for one version of Alice in Wonderland was bollocks. The music for the other version had to come from the States or something, it was complicated and stuff. It's looking increasingly like Guys and Dolls, which would not necessarily be a bad thing - it's a known show with popular songs. I know that another group are going to be doing it around the same time. Which leaves us with two issues: Are they going to wipe the floor with us on this (and really, do we care?), AND will we even get the rights? DANIEL BEVAN: Wants to meet me re: production team for his show. Also wants to do it in first semester, expects me to pull the Helix outta my ass. I'm trying to convince him to use the Interfaith, but he still needs a production team. Joe M, can I get you to email the production mailing list and see who's interested? DEE JONES: Held auditions on Tuesday for her play "My Mother Said I Never Should" and cast herself and one other girl, leaving two empty spots. She wants more auditions next Tuesday and has already booked a room. I like this girl, she gets off her ass and does things. The show will be in semester 2, at some bloody stage. Attention Stormtroopers!! There is now an addition to the previous mission... ...You should all be aware of the Clubs and Societies office (upstairs in the Hub). Therein, you will find a stack of posters on top of the wooden "cubby-hole" unit, to the left of the photocopier (just ask if you're lost). These are advertising "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" - what we need you to do is to take them and put them on display. The next part is important, so listen up: ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: There are certain RULES you need to follow in order to survive a "postering"!!: Be careful, or WE WILL GET FINED!!!!!! DO NOT put posters on WALLS!! DO NOT put posters on GLASS!! Basically, don't put them on the actual Building, Just... ...NOTICE BOARDS!! These are everywhere, in every building in the college - so fill em up!! Priorities are in this order: The Hub (don't put all of them here, but it's important to have a few) The Henry Grattan Building The Rest - every other building!! GorBleedinBlimeyGuvnor! There's just sooo much stuff going on this week in DCU Drama, it's all a little overwhelming. But we persevere, because WE ARE DRAMA, DAMMIT! Righty Ho, first off, Drama have managed to get their grubby little hands on an undisclosed number of tickets for the Socs Ball, the premier night out of the college year. We will offer said tickets to our members BEFORE they go on sale to the general public at exactly the same price. We only have a few, so it's first come, first served! Sorry... The Socs Ball is probably the most in-demand ticket of the year (with the exception of DCU Drama's annual musical), and last year tickets went on sale at 10am and sold out at 10.25. And if you hadn't been queuing since 8.30, you were shit outta luck. It's all happening at the Burlington Hotel on the 29th of November, and tickets are a bargain bin 45 euro. It's the fairest way :) THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is upon us again! This year, we are holding it in association with the SU Halloween Ball on Thursday night the 27th (this Thursday!). It's a great opportunity to put on women's clothes (if you're a guy) or dress really slutty (if you're a girl, a guy, or other). We then get to sit in the Venue, watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show, scream, yell abuse, throw stuff, sing and dance. It's what Drama is all about, and has become an annual favourite of our members. Here's the deal: Tickets for the Halloween Ball are 8 euro. HOWEVER, Drama are offering discount priced tickets to our members! 'Cos we looove our members, basically. So if you're a member of DCU Drama, you get to go to the Rocky Horror Picture Show AND the Halloween Ball for a ridiculously cheap price! Yay! Watch out for our stand in the HUB during the week! So get over to CG05, the Henry Grattan Building at 6pm this Tuesday and meet the Director! No other preparation is necessary, just show up! (you'd better be a girl though, sorry guys). MERCHANT OF VENICE: We were pleasantly surprised at the level of interest at DCU Drama's second stab at Shakespeare (we did Macbeth last year to great acclaim). To the extent that we need to have further auditons and callbacks to determine our cast. So get along to XG14 at 2pm wednesday and do just that!
