Ahoy gang, Just a few thoughts on "Stars in their Eyes." I realise that I'm not producing, so feel free to tell me where to go, but a few issues have sprung to mind. I'm addressing this to the producers, Jes, Dave and Jay, and also the drama committee so that we all know exactly what's going on. I haven't really been talking to any of you much this week, and now I'm off home to Clare for the weekend, so here are a few things to think about before Monday. OK, here goes… THE STAGE: Shelly (who I gather is helping out) came to me on Thursday and announced that Elaine has said that we are NOT allowed to use the usual setup that we have in the past – where we stand up the stage flats on end, decorate them and hold the show on the floor in front of them. Apparently we have to hold the show on the stage itself, for sound reasons. This leads to a major headache. In previous years, it has been easy to put the set for the show together, whereas this year, if what Shelly says is true, is going to be much harder work. ART SOC: Have offered to help out, I think. Are we in touch with them? I believe Rachael.obrien7(a)mail.dcu.ie is their chair…or at least she's on committee. Do we have confirmation as to whether we MUST use the stage, or can we carry on as we have in previous years? THE ACTS: Do we have a running order? Apparently Breifne Earley will be late in arriving in Dublin, so it might be prudent to put the Blues Brothers on in the second half. REHEARSALS: How have rehearsals been going? Have they been going? Our acts will need to rehearse on a stage, to get their movements right and their spacing etc. I'm suggesting Tuesday, in the Venue (unless it's otherwise engaged), so that we can do some tech work while we are at it… COSTUMES: Are our acts providing their own? Are Drama offering help on that front? MUSIC: Do we have karaoke style copies of all the tracks necessary? If not, who is looking into that? I have a copy of the song Yvonne Tuohy sang last year when she won, for her reprise performance. She has been asking about rehearsals too. We still have the torn wedding dress she wore last year – it's in the equipment room. MPS: I know that the impromptu taping session for today (Fri) had to be put off because of short notice and the myriad of other things happening around campus. Have the tapings been rescheduled? If so, for when? We need to have the tapings done by Monday at the very latest, as MPS have to have enough time to edit them and make them look purdy… SCREEN: We need to hire a screen and a projector for Wednesday night so that we can show the "before" sessions. Are MPS looking after that or do we have someone on it? We can get one from the AV loans, C162, no need to pay for one. TECH: I am aware of the assorted hiccups that we had in setting up the RHPS. Eoghan: any word on a potential lighting workshop for Tuesday night? In advance of perhaps getting some newbies to help out on Wed? SOUND: What are the issues concerning the use of microphones etc in terms of feedback, stage location and whatnot? Realistically, we need to be in the Venue from about 4pm Wednesday for tech run throughs etc. RADIO MIKES: Some acts might prefer to use them, like the Spice Girls so that mic leads don't get in the way of their dance routines… PRESENTERS: Has Roisin Cooper committed to presenting the show? Have we got a co-presenter? If not, I volunteer my services (I did it last year Anyhoo…). Our presenters need to meet with all of the contestants BEFORE the show, to drill them for info and stuff so that the interviews during the show go smoothly. Will the presenters be using radio mikes? If so, we'll have to get them back from Skerries… JUDGES: I believe Sarah Farrell is on board. That leaves two spots. Have we approached anyone else? Names that I would suggest include: Charlene Connolly, chair of Music Soc. Riona JudgeMcCormack, all-round Drama legend and alumni. Brian Smyth, chair of the SPC Claire O Neill, cos we miss her Father John/Sister Barbara – they are always willing to help out, and after my turn this week at the SVP quiz, they kinda owe me one. Michael Moriarty, another alumni, but may be in attendance anyway as an audience member. We need to sort out our judges and soon. SPEAKING OF MICHAEL MORIARTY: I spoke to him at the launch of life.dcu.ie<http://life.dcu.ie>and he said that his company, KPMG (I think) are thinking of holding their own "Stars" show next April (with a budget of 50,000 euro, fuckers), and may be popping along to see the show, with some muckers from work to SHOW THEM HOW IT'S DONE. So no pressure thenJ POSTERS: I know that we have a poster designed. Have they been printed yet? We should have enough in our account over at campus print – if not, please put in 20 bucks, keep a receipt and Shane will reimburse ya. We need 30 A3 and about 20 A4 posters, and WE NEED TO PUT THEM UP!!! Monday, as early as possible. Everywhere. Are MPS mentioned on the poster? TICKETS: Have we got a ticket design? If not, use a shrunk version of the poster, 12 to a page and get them printed up at campus print. 25 pages = 300 tix, more than enough. We need volunteers to man the ticket desk (which I shall mention in the announce drama email) and we need that desk manned mon-wed from the hours of 11am to 4pm. There's stuff happening in the street in the HUB all week, it being Arts week, so we will have a target audience to sell to. I suggest 5 bucks and 4 for members of Drama, MPS and ArtSoc (if they're helping out). Get the back of the tickets stamped with the SPC stamp for verification purposes. PRIZES: What have we got? Has anything been organised at all? We need a plaque/trophy of some description for the winner, and we also need second & third place prizes. The trophy shop on Marlborough Street (where we got the prizes for last year's DADAs) will do nicely, but they need to be contacted Saturday or Monday at the very latest. OK, nothing else is springing to mind, so I hope that you're not all overwhelmed with the amount of crap that I've just dumped into your collective laps. I realise that I am NOT the producer, and you might already have all or most (or some) of these points covered, but there's no harm in throwing my two cents into the ring. There's a lot of work to do, and not a lot of time in which to do it. Yayness! Just a quick note… As I write this on the bloody train to Limerick, a few thoughts occurred to me. The early showing of "Whose Line…?' was a great success, albeit an under attended one. What audience we got was well impressed, and we have discovered a wealth of improv talent. We also have a panel to work tonight's performance in the Helix, which is something of a relief, seeing as it is advertised on all of the posters J Anyhoo, it has been suggested that Drama could a): make this an annual event and b): possibly even do it again perhaps in the New Bar during Arts week (maybe thurs. afternoon). It's a rowdy and boisterous show, and doesn't demand too much concentration from the audience. Or rehearsal from the cast, yayness etc. Oh and it's a great fucking laugh too. So whaddaya think? Evening comrades, Better be prepared to spare a few minutes for this, cause it aint pretty. Just to highlight the stuff that was brought up at the SPC TGM (Term General Meeting, to answer the question), most of which you all probably know already. Firstly, to start on a high ( not that the rest of the email is bad news), it is my great pleasure to say that DCU Drama has been officially allocated the following for the year 2005/2006: Activities: €3,699 Travel:€4,290 Equipment: €11,040 Misc: €400 That's a total of €9229, Yayness! And the musical has a seperate allocation of €4000. That' s considerably more than any other society recieved, the next being about 8.2k, and thats more than the socs ball is being funded (€8,400). Next, the SPC gets approx €175,000 to allocate amongst societies, of which approx €106,000 has been allocated, that means we can apply for lots more funding!!! The exact details of our grant app, and everybody else's will be available from Siobhan from Monday, with all grant app's being published on Life for all college members to see. Regarding funding, Brina (SPC Chair) has said that basically form the start of Semester 2, any events applied for must be post on Life, or no funding will be granted. I aint to sure if this will, or wont happen, but the basic idea is to get people to use the site, especially after so much money has been wasted, i mean invested, in it. Moving swiftly along, the Bics: For those who dont know, the bics will be held in dit this year. Anyway, there was meant to be a meeting re the bics last monday, but it had to be cancelled. This meeting is to be held in a few weeks time, exact date to be decided, and Brain has that one orv two mmebers of each committee try to attend Next, I don't know if we have keys to our noticeboard, but if not a set can be organised by Lisa. Almost there, as many of you may ,or may not know, Drama's locker was broken into during the summer, and cables and some other stuff was taken. Now, the SPC don't know exactly what was in the locker, but have agreed to replace it all, so this is our chance to get a few freebies of the SPC, within reason, NO ROBOT'S!! Our beloved equipment room!! is now going to be shared wit every other society that wants it. We barely have enough room as it is, let alone have more shit thrown in on top of our stuff!! So we have to look for alternative accomadation for our stuff (the old buildongs building), Regarding the safety of our gear, ive been told that the plan is to put cages in the room whereby each society can store their stuff in their respective cage, which will be locked and be accessible to that society only, ie our stuff wont be fleeced by other societies, or at least that's the idea... An equipment council has been set up to deal with the above issues re lockers, cages etc.and is being chaired by Elaine, and Eoin is on it. Last paragraph, and im getting a pain in my arse from sitting in front of the computer for so long. All bookings for the venue are apparently going to be put on Life by Mr. Events Officier who is harder to find than fucking houdini. It's a case of seeing is believing with this one, i think. Ooooh, more thoughts. Stars in their eyes is on next week. When are the tickets going sale, who's selling them, and who's producing the show???? More stuff. Arts week budget has been emailed to you all. As you can see, Stars hasn't been granted all it applied for, im lookin into why, more news to follow One final note, Bob could you email me all the costs that you are putting on your credit card re broadway, just so ill know what is owed to you. [Drama-Committee] St. Pat's Meeting

Hey guys, Just a few things I thought I'd mention in relation to the meeting in St. Pat's tonight. First of all, Bob, could you e-mail the running times of the two one-act plays to Martin French and ditdrama(a)gmail.com. DIT also need cast lists and a short blurb about each of the plays. Also, Dave, I know you have connections with Miller and we were wondering if there's any chance that you could arrange for them to hold a drinks promotion in the 'Cat & Cage' on the night of the awards ceremony. It wouldn't be officially associated with the festival of course but we've been promised the 'Cat & Cage' for free, provided that we can fill it, and we reckon that a drinks promotion of some kind might entice a couple of extra people to come along. We have been lumped with the responsablity of organising the four principal awards for the festival (Best Production, Best Director, Best Actor & Best 'Vibes'). Basically, we just need four engraved trophies of a reason size. I know Elaine knows stuff about this, but if anyone else could let me know where we could get a good deal, I'd really appreciate. Another thing, we were considering the possibility of using the DCU Drama Karaoke Machine on the night of the awards. Would this be ok? Mr. d'French assures me that he'd keep it safely locked up in the dungeons of St. Pat's until it's needed. Can that be used to play normal CD's and would it be loud enough to act as the sound system for the first part of the night before all the Karaoke begins? Tickets for students for one night of the festival will be €4 and there will be week long tickets available at a price of €10. If y'all could encourage people at rehearsals, auditions etc. to come along, that'd be really cool. I'd like to actually start collecting money from people so I can get them to commit to coming to the festival. Ok, one last thing. The next scheduled meeting for the festival is set to take place at 2pm on Friday the 18th in the TCD canteen, just to be vindictive or ironic or something. Unfortunately, I'm working that day and won't be able to make the meeting. If somebody else was prepared to go along, that'd be like so totally awesome. Lemme know. Shane, is there any chance you'd be able to mail her a copy of the grant aps for 'Stars' and the one-act plays. Ok, I really am sofa king wea todd did when it comes to this kinda stuff but I presume we can submit the same grant aps as we did to the SPC? Sorry for only forwarding this now.
