Oh, the madness, the absolute madness. As I write, I'm sitting on Fung Wah's Chinese special bus to New York (only $15 one-way from Boston!!) and gave up trying to sleep, so I decided to scribble the first instalment of my "crap diary" of the J1 Visa Summer Experience. Ho Hum. The fun started back in Dublin last week, when I slowly realised that the average week does NOT contain nine 36-hour days, and that I hadn't enough time to get properly organised before my trip. I sort of unwisely decided to work right up until the Thursday afternoon before my flight (which was at seven am Saturday), foolishly conning myself into thinking that a day and a half was LOADS of time to get fully packed, cart most of my belongings to Skerries/the Bubble/the DCU equipment room, sort out various random college related things, sort out my bike insurance/phone bill/etc, move out of the attractive rat-hole of a dorm that I had been living in since September and get my ass out to the airport. In addition to all of this, there was the small matter of my friend Shelly's birthday session to be attended on Friday night too. "Aaaaargh" is the best word I can think of to describe my situation, or possibly "eeeek." Oh, to those of you who are wondering what on earth I am talking about when I say "the Bubble," I am describing a playful lunatic asylum where many of my friends live. It's a marvellous experience, you should check it out… Anyhoo, our story begins on Friday afternoon, just as I am beginning to realise that I am running out of time. Yuck. I had driven the bike to Skerries for storage (*sniff*) that morning, which was an experience in itself, and made my way back down to the big smoke for about 1pm. Much frantic stuffing of various articles of clothing into my rucksack followed. Then I realised that I had to scrub the rat-hole before surrendering the keys to management, or my deposit would suffer. Ah crap. It's no fun whatsoever spending your last afternoon in Ireland cleaning your apartment. Trust me. I got that done and decided against my original plan of heading out to the airport to drop my bags in left luggage so that I could go out for the night and then straight to the airport. Again, the lack of 36 hours in a day prevented me from carrying out this plan. Plan B was to simply leave all of my things in the rat-hole, leave the pub early, go back and get them and head for the Bubble until it was time to head for the airport (about 3am). Although the flight wasn't 'til 7am, Dublin airport has developed a reputation for horrendously long queues at security, often leading to missed flights. Personally, I'd rather spend an hour twiddling my thumbs than miss the bloody plane. So off I went to Messrs. McGuire for pints at 6pm. I hooked up with my brother Glen, best mate Stu and assorted DCU-ites. The DCU-ites kindly gave me a going away card, which gently reminded me of my age (titled "Old Git"). Bastards. Shelly was looking well (doesn't she always?) and brought out the usual crew of maniacs with her. A few scoops in McGuire's were followed by a few more in Doyle's and then I had to bugger off just as things were getting frisky and interesting. Ah crap, again. What's even MORE fun than having to move out of your apartment at midnight, while ferrying loads of your belongings across the DCU campus? Doing it all while on a four-pint buzz, that's what. But, with a little help from Conor, Joe, Glenn and Dave we got it all done and headed for the aforementioned Bubble, where I promptly fell asleep until it was time to look for a cab to the airport. I arrived to a completely deserted Dublin airport and hooked up with Mark, my travelling companion and partner-in-crime for the summer. We spent an hour arsing about waiting for the check-in desk to open but managed to meet Noel "minker" Menehan (a friend from another life) while we were at it. He was off to Scotland for the cup final, the plonker, wearing (logically enough) his Sligo Rovers jersey. We got through check-in and breezed through security. Well, if you can call having to remove your shoes and every single piece of metal from your person "breezing." Our reward for arriving so early and organised to the airport was, once more, a completely deserted departure area with absolutely nothing open and nowhere to even get a bloody cuppa. Great. So I decided to catch a few zzz's on a couch in departures. Upon my waking, it became apparent that we had done the right thing by coming to the airport early, as by the time I woke up again at about 5.30am, the place was a f*cking ZOO. The departures lounge was jammed with irate travellers and queues were out the door of all the food establishments, bars and even the bleedin' newsagents. I'd hate to see what the line at security was like by that stage… The flight to London was uneventful, with the new-and-improved (read: cheapass) Aer Lingus. Although I think the captain had a little too much coffee (or uppers, who knows?) because the landing was a feckin' disaster. He bounced the bloody plane all the way down the runway, doing his best "Kangaroo Jack" impression and then had the gall to tell us to enjoy our day in London. There were more than a few queasy-looking victims shuffling off the plane that morning, I can tell ya. One overpriced vegetarian breakfast in a smoky Heathrow bar later (remember smoky bars?) and Mark and I were ready to jump on the British Airways jumbo to Boston. What a world of difference there is between Aer Lingus and British Airways. The two just don't compare. We had a nice shiny new Jumbo Jet, complete with pleasant and helpful (i.e. not surly) stewardesses, our own private TV with 18 movie channels and a quality vegetarian meal to boot – curried apricots with couscous. I know it sounds gross, but don't knock it 'til you've tried it. The result of all that malarkey was that we arrived early and refreshed to Boston. Damian hooked up with us at the airport and we were faced with a new dilemma. We were going to the U2 concert that night, but of course Mark and I were weighed down with all of our bags – there was no way we were taking them to the Fleet Center with us. We settled on looking for a cheap hotel where we could dump the bags and crash for the night after the gig. Our previous plan of leaving the bags in left luggage at the bus station was scuppered by the fact that left luggage was to close at the ludicrously early time of 5pm. Bugger. Complications arose when we realised that it was Memorial Weekend in the States, and it was gonna be a bitch to get accommodation. The last time I had been in Boston for Memorial Weekend I was asked to leave Fenway Park during a Red Sox-Yankees game by several burly security types. It's a long and funny story, and some of you have heard it before. Fond memories though… We lucked out and managed to locate a city centre hotel with a three-bed (and monster beds, as it turned out) suite for the bargain-bin price of just $240 for the night. Eighty bucks a head was a small price to pay to rid us of our luggage-based headaches. We got settled in and decided to head to "Cheers" for a swift jar or three before the gig. They've done their best to make the interior look like the set of the TV show, but it's just not the same (it's too fecking small for one thing). And you're almost expecting Norm to turn up at any moment too. Warning to J1-ers heading to Boston: Damian is 31, Mark 24 and I am 30. We got asked for ID in every single bar we went into that night (and there were a few, heh heh). So watch out. Other J1-related stuff: At immigration, I was NOT asked for proof of funds (i.e. how much cash I was carrying), even when I offered, I was told it wasn't necessary. The silly woman DID ask me what I did for a living back home before coming to the US on my student visa. "Um, I'm a full-time STUDENT," I answered, while keeping my best straight face and not sniggering. And you do get fingerprinted and photographed, it's all a bit scary... Mark is mates with Bono's niece (it's good to have connections) and she managed to hook us up with three tickets to a sold out concert, the final gig of the US leg of U2's Vertigo tour. Sweeeet. We got in and headed to the floor section, having gorged ourselves on overpriced draught Miller Lite (yuck) in the arena bar. The support was from Kings of Leon, a perfect mixture of The Strokes and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bizarre bunch of guys but great tunes nonetheless. I cleverly managed to sneak my camera into the gig (by stuffing it into my underwear, the bouncers were "intimate" to say the least) and filled the entire memory chip with pictures and video of U2's performance. And what a performance! The boys were seriously on-form, lashing out reams of classic tunes to an overjoyed rabid audience. Perhaps it was because it was the last show of the tour, but they stayed onstage for much longer than they usually do, cracking jokes with the audience and playing a few songs they hadn't played live in years. We were treated to a flaking version of "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses," a song they had not played live in ten years! For "One," Bono implored the audience send texts to a number about Third World debt. Within seconds, every mobile phone in the arena was held aloft. I think it's possible that the phone may replace the cigarette lighter as a symbol of appreciation at concerts. It was a little disconcerting (and a little emotional) to see a veritable sea of cellphones being waved about, lighting up the audience like an ocean of undulating stars, casting a green-blue glow over the masses. You may not think that the sight of 20,000 phones lit up and waving about could bring a tear to the eye, but then again, you weren't there… Boston U2 fans are a lot like their baseball fans – knowledgeable and extremely passionate about their idols. They welcomed us into their fold and filled our heads with tales of previous gigs and their various struggles in getting tickets. We were surrounded by them and they made us feel very much at home, delighted to have some Irish kids to talk to. Finally we trooped out of the concert, happy and partly deafened, in search of a decent bar. We settled for a half decent one, having been asked for ID yet again at the door. A few quick Amstel Lights (ah, memories) and some seriously dodgy nachos later and we were set for bed. Our king sized hotel beds beckoned… …and here we are, on the bus to New York City. Woo Hoo! I will be scribbling updates as the summer progresses, although I'll try not to suffer from diahorrea of the keyboard TOO much. Evening all, So it seems that a mail came from my account outting me? That explains the sympathetic e-mails and the odd texts I've been getting lately so! You have sadly been duped. That was the masterstroke of one Joe Murray, who rightly screwed me for leaving my terminal unguarded! As much as he'd want it otherwise, I'm strictly hetrosexual and that doesn't seem likely to change soon (unless perhaps, Laura Prepon gets a sex change operation!). Anyhow, kudos to Joe on the forgery. T'was most exceptionally detailed and a skilled attempt to playing my style. And now for something completely different! heya guys i'm trying to get all of the scores, etc from the musical to send them back, and i found out that some of them were missing!! Shane - i know you were in touch with the band, so can you ask anyone who hasnt given back scores for them Joe M - i know you know most of the people from the choir, so can you make sure that everyone gave back their chorus scores. anyway, here's a list of what's missing if you know anyone who might have one of them 4 vocal scores 1 prompt book 1 violin score 2 reed scores 1 trombone score i'll need to get these back to musicscope asap, so if you can hurry up contacting people we can send them back without it being a major team event :) cheers dudes Claire 087 2942137

Hi all, As it comes to the end of the year, I realise that half the time i'm gonna spend in this college has already passed, and i thought i would point out some things. Namely - my sexuality Contrary to contents of the occasional email sent from my inbox saying "Hey i'm gay", i'm actually not. However nor am I 100% staight. Although i'm sure most of you probably won't even care, i just thought, for myself, I would state that i am technically bisexual. I would appreciate it if you would all not make a big deal of this, especially since i will be working with most of you next year on Drama soc. Of course, i'm not asamed of it I just don't want a big deal made out of it. Thanks all for reading and I hope this does not change anyone's opinion of me. [Drama-Committee] Musical Meeting stuff

Ahoy gang, Well, last night a few of us had a quiet gathering and a meeting of minds (sort of), to discuss plans, ideas and tactics for next year's musical. Quite a bit of stuff was discussed, primarily Breifne's proposal that he be the producer next year. Breifne wasn't able to make the meeting, but did scribble a monster email, which we read at the meeting and I have included below... It was a bit of an information-sharing, brainstorming session and amongst the topics discussed were: Dates and venue: generally week 9 seems to work the best - or week 8 as a fallback. The Helix would be ideal, at the right price. Elaine is working on that one. Applying to the National Lottery and the Dept. of Education for additional funding/sponsorship. Shelly is gonna look into it. Initial auditions/casting in semester 1, around week 5 or 6. The reasoning being: even if half the cast drop out due to lack of interest/shit exam results, we still have less work to do than if we audition and cast in week 1, semester 2. The cast could meet informally once a week and do read throughs, giving them a better feel for their characters, more intimate knowledge of the show and a head start in general. It will make a difference in the level of "polish" in the performances. Set rental/purchase: Buying seems expensive and we have nowhere to store a set (at the moment), whereby renting is a possibilty we should look into. Volunteers? ADVERTISING: more promotion, definitely. If we get into the Helix, inclusion in their brochure/website is a plus, also publications such as Hot Press, In Dublin etc will be more likely to carry an ad for us. The AIMS (which we have to renew membership with) website could be a boon for us too. Much to do and to look into. Costumes: The Mills Factory have assloads of stuff that they throw out on a regular basis. Our New Best Friends :) The formation of a production team (NOT committee) to include producer(s), drama treasurer, stage manager, set designer/builder and possibly tech officer could sit in on a few meetings too. NO decisions were made as to the producer, much of Breifne's proposal was discussed - it was agree that some of his ideas have merit (earlier auditions), some are intriguing but unrealistic (over-involvement of multiple societies). Issues of dedication were raised - it was also generally agreed that ideally the producer should be on campus or at least available at zero notice. The Bloody Show: Loads of ideas were suggested, discussed at length, discarded for various reasons and bandied about in general. Including: GREASE: Pros: Well known show, seat filler, great songs etc Cons: Too expensive, rights not available due to constant touring/West End etc RENT: Pros: Well known show, topical, easy set, great songs, seat filler Cons: None, bar the fact that the rights aren't bloody available. *sighs* ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW: Pros: Wacky, out there, great songs, well known show. Cons: May not be available, concerns over selling-power TOMMY: Pros: Great songs, well known rock opera, seat filler Cons: Mammoth task, needs 1st class musicians/singers, no dialogue (it's an opera), availability? Several others were discussed and a shortlist was whittled down to the following shortlist which I (Bob) will be looking into re: rights availabilty. FOOTLOOSE JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT THE WIZ SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER GODSPELL COBACABANA CABARET EVITA A CHORUS LINE All have their attractions and their horrible sides - some need great dancers (Sat. Night, Copacabana, Footloose), some need extremely strong leads (Sat. Night, Footloose, Evita), some have very challenging songs (Evita), some have shitloads of male parts (Joseph) and some are a costume nightmare (Copacabana). The attractions of most are fairly apparent. Ideas? Comments? Go nuts here people. That's it I'm outta here. (another Homer-ism) Hugs, Bob PS: Here's Breifne's email, have a read... Here's my two cents, firstly can i suggest you make sure you have the guts of the next half hour free, this is pretty long, i just spent an hour typing it, so probably will take at least twenty minutes to read. The most important thing is to select the four following things: The Show The Venue The Director(s) The Producer(s) and i think that really doesn't matter which happens first. My belief is that if the all of the above are sorted asap, (at the very latest mid-summer) it can be happen. The Show: It doesn't really matter that much to me, either go for a classic (Sound of Music / Oklahoma / South Pacific / Grease / Any other guaranteed crowd puller) or something more arty. Personally, i feel that after this year, you need to get bums on seats, and you need to increase the profile of the auditions and stuff, and one of the classics will do that. I'm open to all suggestions from this years musical cast (I think that is the fairest way to do it) The Venue: In my opinion there is only one place to put this on, the Theatre in the Helix. with the right promotion and marketing, it is possible to make a nice profit on a week run (even at proper rates, a discount is a great bonus, and should be looked for 100%). The Director: I have absolutely no problem with recommending Alan Kinsella as next years Director, but if anyone has any suggestions with any other directors, it would probably be only fair to interview them or at least meet them. But with no other suggestions, Alan would definitely get my vote (that goes for Eadoine and Iain as well by the way) The Producer: I have made it quite clear my intentions, and would be interested in taking on the role of Producer for next years production. --------------------------------------------------------- Mark was looking for my bit to the Drama Soc, first let me start with a little background. We were all involved in the last production, lets just say that the attendances were less than satisfactory, I don't intend to point any fingers, lets just say that there needs to be a marked improvement in the profile of the show for next year. While DCU Drama need to be commended for their efforts in starting and sustaining an annual musical, trojan work over the last seven years, i feel it has come to the stage where it can almost be put on a pedastal, like the Societies Ball, and should have it's own little production committee, made up of representatives from a number of societies. Including a number of societies has a number of knock on effects. It widens the pool of people involved in the show, both on stage and off, which will also have an increase in the friends and family who come to the show, word of mouth will also be larger for promotion and work loads. It means that a specific job can be assigned to a society, and that will be their contribution to the production. (Publications Soc could be responsible for the programme / Redbrick might be responsible for a specific website / Dance would provide Dancers). If i were to produce this show, the possible societies (rough first draft) which might be involved would be: ? ArtHaus (Programme, Promotion & T-Shirts) ? Dance (On-Stage ? Dancers / Choreography) ? Debating (On-Stage ? Actors) ? Drama (On-Stage ? Actors / Singers / Dancers) ? Eclectic Music (Orchestra) ? Electronic Music Society (Orchestra) ? FotoSoc (Programme & Promotion) ? Media Production Society (Programme, Promotion & Video / DVD) ? Music (Orchestra / Cast / Pit Singers) ? Publications (Programme & Promotion) ? Redbrick (Website) why should Drama try and do all the above when there are people who's basic interests are doing the tasks above. Also over the past few nights in DCU, especially at the various open mic nights, there is some real talent in DCU, we need to start looking past the ends of our own noses. The only way to do that is to get the whole production bigger than DCU Drama Soc. I need to digress a little here, i don't want to offend any one, but a lot of people are intimitated by Drama Soc, its just the nature of the society, once you have been in a show, any show, you really get to know most of the cast, this forms a kinda of a cliche, we need to get away from that, getting a large number of societys on board will really help with this. What needs to be done over the next few months (by August 2005 at the very latest) ? Request choice of show from cast of ?Sweet Charity? ? Enquire about rights for all suggestions. ? Select Musical ? Obtain Musical Rights, Confirm Venue and select On-Stage Production Team. ? Organise Budget ? Initiate Sponsorship Programme ? Get as many societes on board as possible. What needs to be done (Auditions / Rehearsals - 2005-2006) ? Hold Auditions in week 4 / 5 / 6 of Semester 1 ? Rehearsals: One evening a week from Week 6 ? Week 12 of Semester 1 ? Two Evenings a week from Week 1 ? Week 4 of Semester 2 ? Three / Four Evenings Week 5 of Semester 2 ? Full Weekend of Week 5/6 ? Show for Full Week 6 One Rehearsal per week in Semester One, with a real emphasise on the social aspect, the rehearsal could be for a couple of hours every monday evening, and a few drinks in the bar afterwards (just a suggestion), to make everyone feel really welcome. Some sort of night in the bar for the first one or two rehearsals will really work wonders by the middle of semester 2. In second semester, step that up to two per week, and then pretty much 24 /7 for the week of the show, and the one before it. I think people are scared by the input which is needed, especially with your time, and spreading it out makes it more accessible for the casual participant, without alienating anyone who is dedicated. It also doesn't take over your life for six / eight weeks at the start of second semester. Other Suggestions. Have eight shows (five evening performances - Monday - Friday) with three matinees (Saturday / Sunday / Wednesday) Saturday / Sunday would basically be dress rehearsals. We all know how jumpy Children are at this sort of stuff, the set could be half built, the band out of tune, the singing in the wrong key, and they still wouldn't even know. The Shows would be for Local Primary / Secondary Schools and Children of DCU Staff, who are always looking for a reason to show their kids around their work, especially if its in the Helix, and they know well in advance. One aside on this, if you were doing a show which included some youngsters, to hold auditions and stuff in a number of local schools, and cast one or two kids from local schools, you could even have two or three kids playing each role, and let them do two / three shows each. then you invite their entire schools to the shows. The Schools would be excellent at getting a crowd to the show. Thats blatant promotion / marketing, and i make no apologies for that. You might only need to have them in for a few rehearsals each as well. Having two performances on the previous weekend allows the tech crews and the production teams to iron out any difficulties in a show setting, with out a hyper critical audience. All of this is only suggestion, there are other stuff which i haven't gone into, on the ways to get money out of the various people round the college, which is not a problem, as long as people get enough notice, and are asked the right question, in the right way, at the right time, by the right person. That might sound a bit mad, but trust me, that is exactly the way DCU works. There is money available if you ask the right people. (Not much, but enough to make it worth your while asking). and other stuff like sponsorship will be easier if we have the four basic points (Producer / Director / Venue / Show) decided asap. Thats a little more than 2 cents at this stage, but i am interested in doing the job of producing, and feel that i might bring some fresh new ideas to the table. If you and the Drama soc committee are prepared to give me the green light, we can get some work done over the next two weeks. ---------------------------------------------------- The only thing i haven't really touched on is the budget, but that will fall into place when we have decided the four topics. Ahoy Gang, Having spoken to Elaine about our proposed meeting for 3pm on Wednesday the 25th, she confirmed (as suspected) that that time was no good for her, no good for Alan Kinsella and probably no good for Riona either. Soooo, with that in mind, she proposed this: Those of us WHO ARE AVAILABLE (and that means if you're supposed to be studying for an exam, then stay at home and study) should come to a meeting next monday at 6.30 to meet with Alan, Elaine, myself, Breifne (assuming he can make it) and talk about his plans then. Anyone not at the meeting, we will catch you up on the action and we will have a vote at our meeting on the 25th. Whaddaya think? [Drama-Committee] 6:30=Monday Meeting

Okay folks, Many apologies for the confusion but it has been decided to stick with the original plan of having our Drama meeting this coming Monday (tomorrow) at 6:30. I realise that I sent out an e-mail with the sole intention of bringing the meeting back an hour so we could listen to Breifne's plans and not have to wait another week to finalise "all things musical". However, due to certain DCU Drama alumni being unable to make it, it is now our plan to begin our meeting at 6:30 without Breifne present and leave him discuss his ideas with us at a later date. Again, apologies for all the proposed changes. So: DCU DRAMA MEETING, 6:30. Clubs 'n' Socs. See ya then. P.S. Hey all, Sorry for annoying ye all during a precious weekend but I just wanna get some feedback regarding moving the proposed Monday meeting to 5:30 instead of the usual 6:30? Breifne is unable to make anything later than 5:30 to discuss his plans for the musical and I feel that it would be better to discuss all musical-related business in the one meeting rather than call another meeting the following week when the majority of us have exams, etc. So please get back to me if you can/can't make it either via e-mail or a text/call(086-3623644).
