About
Cyrano
Barabbas’ Cyrano is an ambitious and innovative
adaptation by Veronica Coburn of the original Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond de Rostand. Cyrano de Bergerac was first performed
in 1897 and featured a robust cast of poets, soldiers and bakers. Barabbas’ Cyrano is transposed to a modern idiom
which will relate the most human of stories to a modern
audience.
In this updated version Cyrano
is a celebrity chef – bedrock of the establishment. He competes with young chef
hotshot Christian, for the affections of the beautiful New York Times food
critic, Roxanne. The classic tale of a very big desire and an even bigger nose
will be played out in the contemporary world of celebrity ‘chefdom’ where what
you look like and how successful you are is everything.
This modern day love story
tackles with trademark Barabbas humour, themes of body image, the urgency of the
mid 30’s body clock and the divine optimism of youth.
