Hi, I'm interested in directing a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth. I feel it is a timeless plot and can be connected to even in modern times. Also, Macbeth is on the Leaving Cert English exam for 2004 and I think this would be an opportunity for schools to see a production of the play. I have a few basic ideas: First of all, I think the play could have a modern setting. Macbeth could be a jealous gang member trying to take control of a city, killing a gang leader in order to get to the top. The production could involve things relative to modern society (this way their interest could be held throughout the production): guns instead of swords, drug addicts as the witches, police forces as the armies gathering against Macbeth. Maybe some scenes could be set in nightclubs etc., using dance music to set an atmosphere. I also think that the fact that it's set in modern times could cut down on the costs of props and costumes (no need to make period costumes, actors could wear their own clothes; toy guns/water pistols used instead of bulky and probably expensive swords...). These are just some very basic ideas which can be expanded on. I'll be attending the meeting tonight in the Slipper and I'm looking forward to discussing the possibilty of putting on this production. -- Conor Farrell
