In this show Andrew Dawson explores the relationship with his father after he had died and lay in his house undiscovered for ten days. Its a very quiet and simple work but one of the most touching and beautiful shows I've seen in a while. Super tender and sensous. Please go and see it. PS: I dont make this kind of recommendations often. But its a show that I would have loved to have at the Fringe, so I feel strongly that work like this needs to be seen. cheers Wolfgang Director Dublin Fringe Festival ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire presents NOVEMBERFEST A mini-festival of dance and physical theatre November 1st - 5th 2005 As part of Pavilion Theatre's ongoing commitment to innovative theatre and dance, and following the hugely successful inaugural festival in 2004 we are delighted to bring you Novemberfest 05 - a small but perfectly formed dance festival, offering five productions with a very international flavour. Some press quotes from Novemberfest 04: "Their feats of compressed acrobatics... are breathtaking and beautiful" Village Magazine (on Pandora 88). "Madcap... intriguing and entertaining" Irish Times (on Trava). Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd November 8pm The Holy Body Tattoo (Canada) in the Irish premiere of Running Wild An evening of stunning solos and duets with music by The Tiger Lillies and an original commissioned score by acclaimed UK band, Tindersticks (known for their signature gutter ballads). Wednesday 2nd November 6pm Nomadi (Finland) present the Irish premiere of Flow Choreography and dance: Arja Raatikainen Awarded the Finnish State Prize for Dance in 1999, Nomadi is one of the most successful Finnish contemporary dance companies. A mistress of stillness, Arja Raatikainen creates a space around herself that allows us to come to her rather than vice-versa. With exquisite lighting and set design by Jukka Huitila and evocative percussion, bells and gongs, Flow binds human and animal appearance into a musical, timeless dialogue. Friday 4th and Saturday 5th November 8pm in association with Dublin Fringe Festival the Irish Premiere of Absence and Presence Realised and performed by Andrew Dawson A deeply intimate and tender production in which dancer and mime artist, Andrew Dawson, explores - not without wry humour - the death of his father. When his father died in 1985, his body lay tragically undiscovered for ten days, inspiring this unusual autobiographical work dealing with loss and guilt, affection and conflict, and the unique emotions of a son to his father. From the gesture of grief to dancing with Max Bygraves... the work uses sculpture, video, mime and the delicate, sensitive movement Dawson has long established as his artistic signature. "a heart-wrenchingly beautiful etude on parental love and loss." The Stage Friday 4th November 6pm Night Star Dance Company (Ireland) in Bow-tie like 'Chioni' and The Ante-Room Choreographer/Artistic Director: Ingrid Nachstern Bow-tie like 'Chioni' is a work made in 2003 after the death of the choreographer's father - Polish violinist Arthur Nachstern, featuring the Purple Electric Violin Concerto by Ed Alleyne-Johnson. Performed in this crumbling landscape Tumbledowntown is a new work written by teenagers living in the area. Taking place in one of the abandoned flats it invites you to excavate the past, present, myth, reality, dreams and nightmares that are embedded within the tower block. Walk through childhood memories recorded by young people from 8 years and up and witness the personal stories of those whose experiences ghost the apartments walls. Playwright and director Louise Lowe and visual artist Owen Boss were commissioned by Breaking Ground 2 and played 21 sell-out performances as part of the Fringe this year and went on to win the Project Arts Centre/Dublin Fringe Festival commissioning award. 'The astonishing Tumbledowntown demonstrated some of the finest performances of this or any other festival and the delivery of the brilliatn ensemble is more devastating for its ontrolled understatement. The short scenes were by turn threatening, humourous, poignant and profoundly moving. A towering achievement.' A Trinity of Two is one of Ulick O'Connor's most rated plays. It tells the story of an encounter between two great Dubliners, Oscar Wilde and Edward Carson. Patrick Bergin will play Edward Carson and Adrian Dunbar will play Oscar Wilde. Both actors were interested in the new perspective they have gained on these two men through reading O'Connors play. Bergin has said "Edward Carson is a very complex and paradoxical figure. I was surprised to discover that he was from Dublin not Belfast, that Patrick Pearse and Roger Casement respected & praised him, that he did not want partition, that he supported the separation of church and state". Dunbar was intrigued to find out more about Wilde as he grew up in Enniskillen where Wilde had attended school. According to Adrian, when he was growing up Oscar Wilde had always seemed "real and alive to me". A Trinity of Two is a fantastic opportunity to see two prominent Irish men from a slightly different perspective. The roles are powerful and witty and the Independent wrote "O'Connor has used the contrast between the two to achieve the practically impossible task of saying something a little bit new about Oscar Wilde". Workshop: Adapting a Space to Modern Theatre Practice. Facilitator: Jean-Guy Lecat. Dates: November 7th - 11th, Time: 10am - 6pm. Where: Dublin Venue: Iveagh Markets, Francis St Dublin 8 and classroom/workshop Open to: Young professionals or students engaged in the areas of architecture, directing and set design, or similar areas. In conjunction with the Arts Council, and Siren Productions' new production of Titus Andronicus (premiering in the Project theatre in December), internationally acclaimed theatre designer and consultant Jean-Guy Lecat is planning to host a workshop in Dublin on 'Adapting a Space to Modern Theatre Practice'. This workshop will be open to students and young professionals engaged in architecture, set design, directing or similar areas. The workshop will be held in Dublin from the 7th - 11th November, from 10am - 6pm daily. This is a free course, and basic materials will be supplied. For further information, contact dean_tanya@yahoo.co.uk. In this workshop, lead by internationally acclaimed theatre consultant and designer Jean-Guy Lecat, participants will explore the nature and qualities of the performance space. In theatre, "that which favours concentration is right, that which hinders it is not" (Peter Brook). Theatrical space must be a source of energy, whilst acting as a catalyst and vehicle for the imagination. How does modern theatrical practice translate into physical space? This workshop seeks to investigate: What dimensions should be given to this imaginative space? How can we find a form for an ideal theatrical arena in the existing spaces today? What form of space can best encourage a beneficial relationship with the actors and facilitate an enjoyable and educational theatrical experience for the audience? How can the technical risks - which are a necessary part of the creative process - be taken without jeopardising the production? Should those who occupy and utilise the space understand and develop their own space? In this context of continual movement, what is the role of the architect? The theme text for this workshop will be Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus as directed for Siren Productions by Selina Cartmell, who will be discussing the text as part of the workshop. There will also be field trips to various Dublin theatres to view working theatre spaces. Over the course of the 5 days, participants will be split into small mixed groups. Each group will transform a given space with paper (they may also add their own materials, such as small pieces of wood, paintings, photos, projections or videos) or to create a model box based on their experiments. There are 20 places available on this course. This is a free workshop, and basic materials will be provided (participants may supply their own additional materials.) However, applicants must be able to attend all 5 days. Application is via email. Email dean_tanya@yahoo.co.uk with the following information: Name. Age. Contact information (email, telephone number) Profession. (Architect, set designer, student, etc.) Reasons for wanting to attend workshop. Deadline for application is: 24th October. For further information, contact dean_tanya@yahoo.co.uk. Jean-Guy Lecat has been technical director and space designer for Peter Brook for over 35 years. The lighting course will also give an introduction to drafting programs such as Max Lux Pro and Softplot 3D, and the set course will give the participants the opportunity to conceive and/or develop a design during the week. This workshop is suitable for people with some previous experience or interest in designing for theatre, students, or early professionals. Lighting: 14th - 18th November, 11am-4pm. As part of its Feis Ceol week long celebration of all things Irish, O'Neill's will now transport a slice of the festival atmosphere back into its pubs in the UK. This year Livingston, the winner of O'Neill's recent national Battle of the Bands competition, performed in The Ambassador Theatre at the Fringe's Uncut event as part of their prize. The five piece band will now tour O'Neill's during Feis Ceol . Livingston owe their unique and edgy sound to their global origins, with members hailing from as far apart as South Africa, Italy and Germany. Their music resonates influences from rock, indie and world music and has earned praise from industry experts from NME, Q and Fender. Alongside Livingston, two other critically acclaimed acts from Ireland will be performing 'fresh from the fringe' at selected O'Neill's - Jaded Sun and Kudos. Jaded Sun are a Dublin based guitar band who have been stamping their own unique brand of rock'n'roll on the Irish music scene since forming in early 2002. As well as reaching number one in the CPU Records Artists' chart, their EP has also received critical acclaim, being play-listed across Ireland and picking up rave reviews from the Irish music press. Four-piece Dublin based band, Kudos, formed ten years ago and now boast a strong history of radio airplay and live gigs across Ireland. Their music combines delicately layered melodies with full on rock energy, producing a sound that whilst forceful, possesses the kind of popular accessibility rarely found in the often uncompromising sound of young bands. Fringe acts will be appearing at the following O'Neill's: Tuesday 22 November Oxford Kudos Glasgow Merchant Square Jaded Sun Bath Livingston Wednesday 23 November Didsbury Kudos Bournemouth Livingston Thursday 24 November Birmingham Livingston Reading Jaded Sun Richmond Kudos Friday 25 November Leytonstone Kudos Liverpool Livingston Wardour Street, London Jaded Sun Saturday 26 November Beckenham Jaded Sun Feis Ceol will run across all O'Neill's for a full week from Monday 21st November.
