[Drama-Committee] C199
Hey guys, just so you know what's going on.... I've copied you on this... Hi there ladies, Sorry to be bugging you with this on a friday, but the following matter has been brought to my attention by DCU Drama. As you may know, Drama have a lot of shows coming up in the next few months and need rehearsal space. Traditionally they have used the larger rooms in the X Building - XG14, XG01 and so on. Rehearsals typically take place in the evenings and (when closer to shows) at the weekends. For smaller shows, other rooms are suitable (such as rooms in the Henry Grattan) but for the Musical especially, a larger room is definitely required for rehearsing dance numbers etc. What been brought to my attention is this: As of the start of Semester 2, the X Building has become "Swipe-Card Access ONLY" after 6pm and at weekends. Valerie Davitt in Educational Services (valerie.davitt@dcu.ie , 700 5247) has assured me that societies will no longer be granted access to rooms in the X Building for rehearsal purposes. Because the Venue is almost constantly booked out (just ask Shea), this represents a severe problem in terms of acquiring rehearsal space for Drama and space for other societies also. I of course appreciate the security concerns regarding the X Building, and accept that it is probable that socs will no longer be permitted to gain access to it after 6pm. Representatives from DCU Drama suggested to Valerie that C199, the large room upstairs in the Henry Grattan would be perfect for rehearsals and the like. She has refused to book the room to any society at any time. When asked for justification for this she stated that C199 is both a classroom and an examination room and will not be booked out to students. Sorry, but that just doesn't follow. Every room in the Henry Grattan is a classroom and there is no problem booking any of them. Both the Venue and the Sports Hall are examination rooms and there is never a problem booking them either. So Valerie's justification for refusing societies access to C199 hasn't got a leg to stand on. I'm writing this to you, Una and Lisa, because as staff members, there is a greater chance of Valerie Davitt listening to you than to me, should you attempt to request the use of C199 for societies' use. I am also forwarding this email to Marie-Louise O Donnell (a staff member and president of DCU Drama) and Charlene Connolly, the SU President, to make you all aware of this troublesome situation. I am hoping that with all of your help, Valerie Davitt can be persuaded to change her mind and grant societies access to C199. Thanks for listening, Bob -- Roibeard O Mhurcu # 54144094 CS3 Class Rep.
