[Drama-Committee] Rehearsals
Dear Rebecca and Drama Committee, Unfortunately an issue has arose regarding Monday rehearsals. The first scheduled hair rehearsal is due to take place this Monday at 6.30. This comes in the aftermath of rebecca, kevin, colm and myself agreeing that for the initial weeks, rehearsals will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. We need three rehearsals a week. There has always been Monday rehearsals for the last few years and as Ger, Sinead or any of our 08/09 committee will tell you, anyone involved it RENT managed to adapt and ajust accordingly in order to accomodate the Monday rehearsal. A Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday scenario is not a runner as it would be too demanding on cast and crew. We do not want anyone to suffer from burnout or complacency. The Tuesday break is neccesary for all. There seems to be a unique situation where it is not humanly possible for the committee to find any alternative time to meet. This is of strong concern to us as 2/3's of the committe are in the cast and Rob and Blaithin have lead roles. We have hit a roadblock and I don't know how to get around it. I have the first cast email typed and ready to send so beit a Monday or Tuesday rehearsal I need to send it out as early as possible tomorrow in order to give the cast adequate notice. Please respond as hastely as possible. Regards, Ed. -- Ed Leamy DCU PRO Societies and Publications Committee 09/10 HAIR - The DCU Musical. Producer 09/10 --
To Ed and The Committee, I am surprised that we have not even begun and although we are doing the same rehearsal schedule as previous years, this seems to be a problem for The Committee. I have no interest in having a back and forth argument with anyone on the Committee. As Ed has put across below, The Production Team, did not choose these days at random. There is a reason why each year The Production Team picks the same days. This is because they are the only days possible to achieve the best out of everyone without people burning out before the show even opens. We pick Thursday instead of Friday, to give people a chance to go home during the early stages of rehearsals because later in the process people won't be able to go home seeing as we will be having weekend rehearsals. Tuesday must be a day off as Ed said below because people need a break. Our rehearsal times are such because we have no other choice. Why can't The Committee change their times? Because at the moment I have been given no reason as to why this is. This has never been a problem in previous years and I am extremely unimpressed that this is, needlessly, being made into an issue. I will be having rehearsals on a Monday at 6:30pm, Wednesday at 3pm and Thursday at 6:30pm. I am very sorry to have to deal with this in such a way, however there is no feasible alternative. If you are in the show and on the committee I understand that you are in a difficult situation but, if you want to be in the numbers, you will be there on Monday. DCU Drama want to be professional and because of this you have hired Professionals on The Production Team to make this a reality. We will be treating you as such and therefore, if you are not present each day there will be consequences. This needs to be sorted by 2pm otherwise, I will let Ed send out the email as the committee have come up with no suitable alternative and it is unfair on the cast to keep them in the dark as they need to have time to prepare. Hi guys, I understand your concerns but I'm just wondering why it was left so late to deal with this issue. I'm happy to work around rehearsal times to find an alternative time for the committee meetings. However this is easier said than done this year as most of the committee are really busy and a lot are final years. I do *not* appreciate being given an ultimatum as seems to be the case from the above emails. A lot of us have just gotten back from New York and I'd say most haven't checked their emails yet. I suggest a short meeting between Rebecca, Ed and a few members of the committee tomorrow to sort this out. Jen On Sun, Feb 7, 2010 at 11:02 AM, Rebecca Hickey <rebecca.m.hickey@gmail.com>wrote:

Hey all, Being at the centre of all this, and as both the Secretary on the committee and associate producer of the Hair production team, I felt it was probably time to share my thoughts! It has been extremely difficult trying to find a time for the committee meetings, as people have class and work and other commitments, and the only time we could find was the Monday evening, which I said to Ed at the time. The fact that this situation is arising is not good as it presents a massive conflict of interest for eight of our eleven committee members, as most of the committee are in the Hair cast. The same applies to members of the Dance Soc committee, I think there are three or four of them in Hair, and as far as I am aware, they have their meetings on Mondays as well. Being in a position where I can see both sides, I have to say that, in this matter, I can see where the committee are coming from. It is not fair to expect people to choose between the committee and the musical, and this has never been the case. It is unique this year, as there are so many committee members in the cast (eight out of eleven), where there were only three last year, making it easier for the committee to work around. It is easy to suggest an alternative time for the meetings, but almost impossible to find one, as we cannot have them on Tuesdays either, because our Acting Workshops take place, aimed at people outside the musical cast, meaning our Training Officer could not attend committee meetings, resulting in her having to leave the committee to facilitate the Hair cast, even though she is not even n the cast herself. However, because these workshops are aimed at those not participating in the musical, I see no reason why rehearsals cannot go ahead on Tuesdays. People have class all day, and as you say, Friday is unsuitable for almost everyone due to work commitments. Indeed, the Committee have been through conflicts before over meeting times and it seems Monday is the only time that suits. I have even tried again since this arose to get another meeting time, but to no avail, as people have had class at suggested alternative times. I hate to have to go on one side of the conflict or the other but it seems I have no other choice, as it presents a personal conflict of interests, not just for me, but for seven other Drama committee members and several Dance committee members also. The idea that people will be tired after three days in a row, if we go Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday makes sense, but they have four days off in between to recover and I'm sure people would much rather that than have their day off in between and be forced to choose between the Production and their Committee, which has never arisen before and is quite unfair. Is there any particular reason that Tuesday is off the cards for a rehearsal? It seems we have hit a roadblock, and I don't think email is the best way to resolve it. Perhaps the face-to-face meeting Jenni suggested is in order? I'm sorry this has come up, but being both on production and committee, as well as being a cast member, I think it is important that this is resolved sooner rather than later, as it is not fair on me or the other cast members on committee to be in this position. P.S, With regards to this week's email it is probably best to send it out as it is to keep the cast in the loop with this week's arrangements, and to come up with a permanent arrangement for the duration of rehearsals when we meet face to face, as it is indeed unfair on the cast to be wondering what is going on. That is my opinion anyway. On Sun, Feb 7, 2010 at 3:02 PM, Maeve McQuillan - Secretary for DCU Drama < sec@dcudrama.ie> wrote:

To All Involved, I am so disheartened by all that has gone on today. First off, the reason why we are not starting with Tuesday is irrelevant seeing as in three weeks the rehearsals will be stepped up to include Tuesdays and stepped up again in another week or two after that to include Friday and the weekends. As far as I am concerned I never intended to put any of my cast members in such a predicament and therefore If any of you wish to step down and fully commit to your role in the DCU Drama Committee there will be no hard feelings what-so-ever and I will find others to take your roles in the show. Furthermore, both Connor and Sinead made it extremely clear in the beginning that The Committees job was to set up the Production Team and then they didn't want to have any creative input with the show apart from supporting it. This however, has not come to pass. Neither has you all wanting to be treated like professionals, I have tried to, however today's events can only been deemed at the very least as, unprofessional. I have been brought in to Direct this show from England and have taken time out of my career to do so. This was of course my choice, but had I known that I wouldn't even have my foot in the door than to be met with problems and roadblocks as Maeve put it so well, I may have reconsidered. I have completed the timetable for the show and put in a lot of time preparing it as was asked of me in November. I understand where you are coming from in so far as you want a meeting, but at this late stage, It wouldn't resolve anything. This needs to be dealt with now.

Hi guys,
I understand your concerns but I'm just wondering why it was left so late to deal with this issue. I'm happy to work around rehearsal times to find an alternative time for the committee meetings. However this is easier said than done this year as most of the committee are really busy and a lot are final years. I do not appreciate being given an ultimatum as seems to be the case from the above emails. A lot of us have just gotten back from New York and I'd say most haven't checked their emails yet. I suggest a short meeting between Rebecca, Ed and a few members of the committee tomorrow to sort this out.

To Ed and The Committee,
I am surprised that we have not even begun and although we are doing the same rehearsal schedule as previous years, this seems to be a problem for The Committee.
Yours Sincerely
Rebecca Hickey

Dear Rebecca and Drama Committee,
Unfortunately an issue has arose regarding Monday rehearsals.
Regards,
Ed.
