Hi, What is the society/faculty fiasco? I'm pulling the plug on Refresher's day, we won't have a presence. We will only have somebody there from 10 - 11 and then a break, which will do us little good. Is mise le meas, Ian On 14 Feb 2012, at 11:37, Laura Cunningham wrote:

Voting on what? Pulling Refresher's day? We didn't but as tables are not booked and its first come first serve if we leave ours unoccupied we will lose it, which will happen between the hours of 11 and 12 (nobody is available), if we do have one from 10 to 11 (bear in mind there is a limited number and not enough for 1 per society). I do not want people to miss classes over this. It's also highly unlikely only starting at 12 that there will be spare tables. Is mise le meas, Ian On 14 Feb 2012, at 18:29, Laura Cunningham wrote:

Surely the few hours after 12 are worth trying to fill? Table Tennis set up ridiculously late on Freshers day and still had sign ups. The fiasco, may require a better name, but is the issue that only members of the societies (RedBrick and EngSoc) will receive Chromebooks intended for Faculty wide distribution, in our faculty that rules out at least 60% of the students. Surely it is important that we promote this even if it is for a limited amount of time. All the best, Ais. On 14 February 2012 18:35, Ian Kavanagh <ian.kavanagh4@mail.dcu.ie> wrote:

The "fiasco" definitely requires a different name. I do not see why there is an issue here. All other faculties chose classes (1 class per faculty) with less than 30 people in them and gave a Chromebook to each student in that class. 1 of the classes where every student received one is MINT4. The Engineering and Computing Faculty decided at committee level that the Chromebooks would be distributed through our societies and to our members. They have never been intended for faculty wide distribution, that is several years down the line if there is positive feedback returned from this trial. 60% of Students in the Engineering and Computing Faculty have not been ruled out because the Chromebooks are being distributed by our societies, they are welcome at any time to signup to either society which will also entitle them access to the common room. Moe has the ability to email all students in our Faculty and has said he will about this initiative. This initiative will be promoted but however long we are able to promote it will become shorter and shorter every day as the Engineering and Computing Faculty are the last to distribute their allocation of Chromebooks and the hope was they would have been distributed by Week 1. I do not agree with the road people want to take here. I do not agree that there should be 1 distributed to somebody in every year of every class. The whole reason they are being distributed by our societies is for them to be extra curricular rather than tied to a students studies and to have them external to the Faculty. I do not agree with the current mode of distribution because not everybody in our societies is being given an equal chance to avail of a Chromebook. A straight lottery of everybody who has listed at least 1 competent project is a much fairer way to distribute the Chromebooks with a proportional distribution between the amount of entries received by each society to at least ensure they all don't end up with one society. I do not see how it is fair that if the 1 person in ICE2 submits a completed application form that they automatically get a Chromebook whereas when you come to ME2 somebody who submits a completed application form has a much lower chance of receiving a Chromebook as their class only has 1 definite allocation. That is not a fair distribution amongst our members. I do understand the reasoning behind the idea but I do not think it is relevant as the Chromebooks will be distributed to Engineers or Computing students who most likely no matter what school they are in will not find a Chromebook any use in their studies whether it be using it for programming, CAD or extensive report writing when wifi is not available. I also do not see why we need to bring this back to a Faculty level when the Faculty already decided it should go down the route of the societies. I have explained everything I have been told or know about this initiative in one form or another already including everything in this email already as unbiased as possible. I have refrained from giving my opinion on this initiative as best I can until now. Is mise le meas, Ian On 14 Feb 2012, at 18:54, Aisling Dowd wrote:

I don't think we can afford to not be there. If we arrange it so its beside the Book Soc table I could work both of em at once. Means whoever pulls the first shift will need to be in at 9 to set up. There is nobody available to set up our table at 9 o'clock. It is currently not feasible for us to have a presence tomorrow. Moe had a great idea of us having a table in the Hub in Week 3 or 4 with the same purpose as tomorrow. Is mise le meas, Ian On 14 Feb 2012, at 19:11, Ruairi OBrien wrote:
