[Minds-disaster] Limitations of Service

MiNDS is allowed back up for now with the following limitations: 1) We retain root access to all machines bar one used as webserver. 2) We can host web pages with whole-college access. 3) Telnet/FTP etcetera are accessable within the Computer Science Department only. 4) We have to set up all systems and the CS dept will change the web server root password. Implications: 1) One machine will be doing pretty much just webserving. 2) We could possibly conduct telnet, hey and development stuff on the webserver. 3) The second implication itself implies a ridiculous two-level MiNDS system and the fragmentation of it's users. Might be able to telnet from webserver to Minds that way from college (CS students can go through their CS Dept accounts). 4) We'll *need* two machines set up for these tasks. Points: 1) Er, it's pretty silly not having root access to the webserver when it should be firewalled on most ports *anyway* without us being able to change that from the machine itself. 2) One of their arguments against us is that societies change every year and there may be good and bad years. The problem with that is that it can be said of all organisations, including the Computer Center. The CC also don't seem to realise that the CS Department have joint root access to our machines. 3) Erm, it's a silly and backward way of doing things. I'd like everyone to pick holes in the CCs logic that they can find so that we can argue with them that the rules are not suitable for our society. David

[Minds-disaster] "DoS" facts

I'm finished writing my stuff for the CC docs, and I'm going to write a report on what happened with the system. I'd like everyone who knows *exactly* what happened before we got shut down to post some information here on exactly what happened, so I can figure out what to write happened with the system. As far as I can remember, Sargon set up the thing in a screen session, Bart tried to shut it down but didn't, and then after the system crashed Darragh rebooted it; but the mail queue was still there, so it kept sending those in the queue... but I can't tell the Computer Center stuff I am not sure of, so I'd appreciate if these three people especially could send me all they can remember.
