You seem to be taking this a little too well cian. As it stands, minds members will not be able to log in to the new machine from college, and
Look, I appreciate as much as anyone else what JK did, I know he got more than we could have, so STOP throwing that at me. No, I don't think I know more than JK, or a fraction of what he knows. But he didn't make this rule, its not his fault, so quit on about JK. You don't think the CC have an attitude problem? They have just dropped another roadblock on us, for no apparent reason (well until they tell us exactly why). They are obviously not bothered about us, they gave in to JK, but not out of any regard for us. This might seem very pessimistic, but its just my opinion, and I'm entitled to it. As for getting around it, well if they don't want our members logging in at all, they should just tell us to fuck off completely. They know damn well we will get around it. I was thinking of redbrick also, maybe they could setup a proxy box for us, which would only accept logins from our ip range, and would only allow ssh to minds. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bart Busschots" <bart.busschots@e-merge.ie> To: "Philip Brennan" <newfoundwealth@hotmail.com> Sent: Friday, July 20, 2001 1:16 PM Subject: Re: [Minds-disaster] RE: [Minds-disaster] Fw: BIG NEWS the
status of the old machine hasn't changed either. Which leaves us with no server. Sure, we can bounce off an outside machine, but what outside machine administrator will let us do this? Look we can get arround these problems. Maybe we could make some sort of deal with redbrick???
JK might even be able to sort something out for us ... compared to before that's a MINOR problem.
You say it is a 'strange' rule. More like ridiculous. Theres no good security reasoning behind it, its the old "your machine with its newer, more advanced software, and its administrators who patch it regularly, is more vulnerable than our crappy win95 machines" attitude all over again. Theres no sense in it. It shows no regard at all for the idea of a computer society, we might as well be the potted plant society. OK ... you mean to tell me YOU a little undergrad knows more than JK ... fine but your talking through your ass. I'm sick of all this crap. Why can't some of you see this for what it is A GREAT DEAL THAT WE SHOULD BE THANKFULL of ... to me it looks like this society has a SERIOUS attitude problem .. not the CC.
WE GOT A GREAT DEAL AND SHOULD BE HAPPY ... go talk to JK if you don't believe me but just make sure you are nice to him because he has been very good to us and if he could see this crap he'd be well within his rights to pull the plug on the whole thing and tell MiNDS> to get stuffed.
As for a hardware firewall, I reckon a separate unix box running ipfw or ip chains is >= the best off the shelf solution. Talk to JK on this one ... I don't know the technical specs.
Our first priority has to be to try and get some access from the college, or at least ask them to tell us why they have done this. Then if they haven't moved, we will have to find some machine to bounce off. Again talk to JK but really you should trust JK .. hr knows what he's at!
Bart: whose fault is it that we went up without their permission? I blame college politics, but thats a bit too vague.... Try JC ... put it up without telling them or making it clear to us that we were going against the CC with it.
