[Minds-disaster] Stop
Ok people. Stop. Stop. Let the foam die down. I think everyone is getting a little worked up. I have proposed that this is a little more than a PRO meeting. Dave disagrees. I have proposed that we send our top 2 elected representatives + a techie. Dave disagrees. Dave suggests we send our Chair, PRO and a technical person. He has good reasons for this as he believes this to be nothing more than a PRO meeting. Here is where the disagreement lies. Is this meeting a PRO excercise, or more than that? I believe it to be more than a PRO excercise as it's our first good face-to-face meeting with the CC since the EVENT. I also believe we should be treating this meeting as more than a PRO event. It is a serious policy meeting. Please stop this anomosity. If anyone has nothing good to say please don't say it. We're going to have to come up with a team for this meeting from the people who read the list. Could people write back and tell us wheather they 1. believe this to be a PRO meeting or not 2. Who should go. I don't think this list is the best place to discuss everything. I think we have to formalise an interactive meeting place that we can use even if minds is down. I think the IRC (internet relay chat) idea is good. What do y'all think. --me http://www.may.ie

Ok people. Stop.
Stop.
Let the foam die down. What?
I think everyone is getting a little worked up. I have proposed that
is a little more than a PRO meeting. Dave disagrees. No. If it was a PRO meeting, then Kevin needs to go alone. My point is that it is a public relations excercise, therefore within the scope of the PRO's
this portfolio. Whether or not Kevin is finally confirmed as the fourth attendee is irrelevant to this point.
I have proposed that we send our top 2 elected representatives + a techie. Dave disagrees. Yes. I think we should get someone else in who can argue a point effectively and calmly.
Dave suggests we send our Chair, PRO and a technical person. He has
good
reasons for this as he believes this to be nothing more than a PRO meeting. No. I have stated many times that this meeting is very important indeed.
Here is where the disagreement lies. Is this meeting a PRO excercise,
or
more than that? It's a PR exercise, not a PRO exercise. At the core of it is that fact that our image within the college is not too good. This *must* be improved upon.
I believe it to be more than a PRO excercise as it's our first good
meeting with the CC since the EVENT. I also believe we should be treating
face-to-face this
meeting as more than a PRO event. It is a serious policy meeting A policy meeting? Can you please explain this point?
This meeting is *VERY IMPORTANT*, but that does not mean it's not public relations. In fact, it is a *VERY IMPORTANT* public relations excercise. Though it is within the scope of the PRO's portfolio, which is quite obvious, such is the level of importance that the portfolio restrictions matter very little. As I have stated SEVERAL times: Whether or not the PRO is finally confirmed as the fourth attendee is irrelevant to the fact that it is within his portfolio. The fourth attendee has NOT been finalised, but I know Kevin and Des are ready and able to go.
Please stop this anomosity. If anyone has nothing good to say please
don't
say it. And as advice, I would like to ask everyone to read posts fully and carefully before replying, and to do so in a manner that will promote discussion of matters important to the society. This goes to everyone, including me.
We're going to have to come up with a team for this meeting from the
people
who read the list. Could people write back and tell us wheather they 1. believe this to be a PRO meeting or not Read the point two above this.
2. Who should go.
Which is what should be discussed here.
I don't think this list is the best place to discuss everything. I
we have to formalise an interactive meeting place that we can use even if minds is down. I think the IRC (internet relay chat) idea is good. What do y'all think. Well, I know my access to the net, at home, is fairly shaky in terms of definite times... it's my Dad's PC connecting to the net, and he's very
think protective. I can therefore only guarantee the required level of net access in work, and that is a 9-5:30 job. Some people do not have access to the net in work, so they will be able to connect at a later time. Because of this, the list is perfect. The only thing better (and I'm not certain about it's security) would be a bulletin board... and, if needed, I *think* I can install vBulletin Lite on the Minds account on Redbrick. David Barrett
We're going to have to come up with a team for this meeting from the people who read the list. Could people write back and tell us wheather they 1. believe this to be a PRO meeting or not
2. Who should go. OK I've already said that I feel the P & VP should go and also a tech person, I would prefer Cian. I also feel that because MiNDS> has a larger role within the college an SU rep is waranted and I feel I know enough about MiNDS> CLubs & Socs in general and have a good reputation with the college so I feel I could do
I don't think this list is the best place to discuss everything. I
NO ... I believe this to be MUCH more ... this is a formal meeting between the top MiNDS> people and the top CC people, hence I feel the P & VP should be there. As MiNDS> is at it's core a techie society we should also send a sysadmin. At this point I feel the role of PRO needs to be cleared up in everyones head ... it is the job of the PRO to comunicate with the PUBLIC, that large faceless body of students out there, and somehow convince them that MiNDS> is great and that they should be bending over backways to give us their pound! This meeting with the CC is NOT about that at all, it is a policy meeting and without a shadow of a doubt the MOST IMPORTANT MEETING in MiNDS> entire existence .... hence VP over PRO. this well. think
we have to formalise an interactive meeting place that we can use even if minds is down. I think the IRC (internet relay chat) idea is good. What do y'all think. That sounds like a good Idea, we could also use ICQ chat.

I always thought the Public Relations Officer dealt with public relations, and that extended beyond posters, and certainly beyond Fair's Day. I also thought that "the public" was more than just students. Please explain why this is not the case. > This meeting with the CC is NOT about that at all, it is a policy > meeting and without a shadow of a doubt the MOST IMPORTANT MEETING in MiNDS> > entire existence .... hence VP over PRO. As I have said: * It is a public relations exercise (with a particular subsection of the public... college staff). * The portfolio distinctions are lessened in importance because of how critical this meeting is. For example, Des has been considered... but he's the treasurer. > OK I've already said that I feel the P & VP should go and also a tech person, > I would prefer Cian. Ditto. > I also feel that because MiNDS> has a larger role within the college an > SU rep is waranted and I feel I know enough about MiNDS> CLubs & Socs in > general and have a good reputation with the college so I feel I could do > this well. I still don't think that you're needed, or that you will be any better at the meeting than Kevin or Des. Thank you for volunteering though. I'd also like everyone to discuss this, as I think me and Bart are the only two to actually say anything about the possibility of Bart's involvement. > That sounds like a good Idea, we could also use ICQ chat. My post in reply to the one you replied to (if you've gotten it yet) describes why this is a bad idea. Should this be called the Common Time scenario? The lack of a common timeframe for interaction is the reason this is a bad idea. You'll only get some of the group participating, not all. David Barrett
Dave,
I always thought the Public Relations Officer dealt with public relations, and that extended beyond posters, and certainly beyond Fair's Day. I also thought that "the public" was more than just students. Please explain why this is not the case. I never said it was just about posters and fairs day .... the PRO should be orgainsiing all sorts of novel events to get the students in ALL YEAR ROUND ... I would consider last years BBQ as a PR event. If it helps at all you can sum up the PRO's responsibilities as "a PA System & Recruitment Officer". It is seen (weather rightly or wrongly) as the lowest of the committee possitions and hence the PRO comming COULD be interpreted as us not taking this seriously, while the VP gives the impression that we are serious about this.
I'd also like everyone to discuss this, as I think me and Bart are the only two to actually say anything about the possibility of Bart's involvement. Indeed ... do other people feel that it would be helpfull or pointless for me to be there??? I only volunteered because I feel it is for the good of the society if you (the committee as as whole) dissagree that's grand, but the offer is there.
Should this be called the Common Time scenario? The lack of a common timeframe for interaction is the reason this is a bad idea. You'll only get some of the group participating, not all. A message board is probably better or a news group. It is also tecxhnically possible to vote by email but this will take time (about a day for a vote) so we would need to have a very clear and concise motion to vote on before we start making a decision.

I have set up a message board here: http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/145279 It will be reasonably private, in that no-one will know the URL, but in fairness, a search on google will probably find it. I don't have a problem with this. ===== _________________________________________________________________ Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries! _________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It will be reasonably private, in that no-one will know the URL, but in fairness, a search on google will probably find it. I don't have a problem with this. Thanks Andy. I'd recommend, however, that people keep on the list, at least for now. I'm going to install vBulletin Lite on RB tonight (it's free and legit) to see if it has the ability to only allow access to approved users (so we only get the committee on board for the committee forum, for example). I know vBulletin 2.0.1 does, which is VERY nice.
It also has polls, and I'll see if it has the option to limit one vote per user (good for a vote). Thanks for the help though, and who know, vBulletin might not work! :) David Barrett
Bugger. vB LITE isn't that good. The full version rocks though. Anyone got $160? :-) Seriously though, the list should be used, and Andy's board too. David Barrett
