[Minds-disaster] History report from Meaigs
Part of the report: MiNDS (Maynooth Networking and Development Society) was started in 1998 by a group of students from the Computer Science department. The aims of the society were to spread knowledge and interest in computers and to provide a social forum different from any yet available in the college. A number of the students involved in founding the society had experienced similar societies in other colleges, including RedBrick in DCU and Skynet in UL. All of these students had found membership of those societies a positive, and worthwhile aspect of college life, and were surprised to find that such a society did not already exist at NUIM. Most of 1998/99 was spent trying to get a server up and running, since the services we provide are such an integral part of what we do. These services include; personalised e-mail facilities, a society news server, web-pages and as many different types of software development tools and tutorials as we can find, and fit on one machine. We also held a pub-quiz to help increase our funds. By the end of 1998/99, with a lot of support from the Computer Science department, we had a working server which committee members could log onto. During the summer of 1999 a lot of work was done on the server to ensure that member registration would run smoothly, and that members of the society would be able to log on and use our services. During the academic year 1999/2000, we built up a small but dedicated group of members who enjoyed using our services, and were committed to seeing the society flourish. We helped to organise a live music event in the Temple Bar Music Centre in conjunction with other similar societies from around the country.
