[Minds-disaster] Letter to front Computer Center document
The letter to front this all is here... comments/corrections post to the list -------------------------------------------------------------------- To whom it may concern, This document is a look at Minds, the Net Society of NUI Maynooth, in the past, present and where we plan to go in the future [1]. As you will read, the society's machine is well secured [2], though can be secured even further by a different network configuration [3]. The society has provided well for other Clubs and Societies of Maynooth [4], and will provide even more services if we are allowed to offer them [5]. It should be clear that the society is an asset to the college and the students in it; and that Minds, though secure already, can be made even more so. I would also like to make it clear that internal disciplinary action has been taken against David Bolger (sargon) and his access rights to the system have been removed. Darragh Sherwin has resigned from his position as Chairperson "for the benefit of the society and the members". [See 6] Document Contents: [1] Minds::Past, Present and Future -- Margaret McGaley and David Barrett [2] Security Report for Maynooth Networking & Development Society -- Cian Synnott [3] Proposal for Network Policy for Maynooth Networking & Development Society -- Cian Synnott [4] Letter from the Societies Officer, SU -- Bart Busschots [5] Nervecenter Proposal -- David Barrett [6] Minutes of Disaster Meetings -- Fiachra Matthews [7] The Committee of Minds Please read over these carefully; and I would appreciate a reply as soon as possible. I don't really like the letter, in form or in content. It's more obsequious than we really need to be, and doesn't look all that professional. Plus, there are some things in the list of attached documents that I would question. The nervecentre proposal seems sort of out-of-place - it's not really related to the current problems we face. Also, a much better document to attach than the minutes of that meeting would be a description of exactly what happened, from 'm-day' up 'till now. While such a document would include some details of that meeting, it would be more directly relevant and more in the line of what the CC will really be interested in. More work, I know, and some wasted effort so far, but getting the very best out of all this is very important. By the way, I'm sure you realise that I'm not out to offend, I'm just dangerously blunt and to the point when something I care about is threatened. :o) Here is an alternative document I've put together (not quite complete, but closer to what we need, IMO): --- begin CCLet.txt --- Dear Sir/Madam, The collection of documents accompanying this letter offer an overview of the Maynooth Networking and Development Society (MiNDS) as it stands now, its history and its future plans. We have compiled these documents in the wake of the Denial of Service incident involving one of our users and the Department of Finance, and the subsequent shutting down of the MiNDS system. It is hoped that this introductory package will allow us to enter into informed discussions with the Computer Centre on the future of the society. The accompanying documents are: * MiNDS: Past, Present and Future -- Margaret McGaley David Barrett * Security Report for MiNDS -- Cian Synnott * Proposal for Network Policy for MiNDS -- Cian Synnott * The Dept. of Finance DoS -- ?? * A letter from the Societies Officer, SU -- Bart Busschots Please consider these documents at your leisure; let me know if you need anything further, or if you would like to arrange a meeting with any or all of the committee. Thank you for your time, --- David Barrett Chairperson, Maynooth Networking and Development Society --- end CCLet.txt --- I realise it's more terse than the previous one, and doesn't mention some of the things the other did, but I think a lot of that can be offloaded to the PPF document, my security docs, and a full report on the DoS.
