[Minds-disaster] (no subject)
Right, Having seen the security document, and realising its about as secure as Alcatraz, I have but two things to say 1) Is there no way we can have FTP for minds, cause its fairly important for me & a few others, like I need to be able to access my files from home and work with them. I know csa7 provides ftp , and The CC doesnt have issues with that (as of yet), so if possible can we get it back. 2) If the answer to the previous is NO, then I would like to suggest that we carry out this plan asap, cause I am getting tired of going to meetings, and talking/discussing/arguing, I think we have done enough. Lets go try get MiNDS> back I better stop now des http://www.may.ie

Heh, that was just the networks document, the security document is a work in progress. ;o)
1) Is there no way we can have FTP for minds, cause its fairly important for me & a few others, like I need to be able to access my files from home and work with them. I know csa7 provides ftp , and The CC doesnt have issues with that (as of yet), so if possible can we get it back.
There is a way you can have FTP, even with this setup. The trick here is to avoid sending MiNDS passwords around in the outside world in plaintext; external FTP would allow that. However, thanks to the wonders of a particularly cool protocol, you are able to tunnel other protocols via SSH. This means that once you've opened your ssh session to MiNDS (with some special options - I don't know the details under Windows, but can find them out pretty easily) you can tunnel your FTP session via the encrypted channel! SSH rocks. So, this doesn't deprive you of FTP, it just makes the FTP experience a little more complicated and a lot more secure.
2) If the answer to the previous is NO, then I would like to suggest that we carry out this plan asap, cause I am getting tired of going to meetings, and talking/discussing/arguing, I think we have done enough. Lets go try get MiNDS> back
Once we have the networks & security documents written, it would be good to pass them by Stephen Brown & James Cotter, so they can see what we're up to. It would be even better if one or the other (or both) could attach letters of approval to the documents; but that's only if they like them, of course. There may be stuff they want us to change before going to the Computer Centre. Slow and careful is good here; rashly going to the CC and demanding things isn't going to get us anywhere. We have to look very good for the next little while. Cian -- "there is nothing wrong /* Cian with emulating a man ** I need to sleep. Let me sleep. who has a nice beard" */ while(student);
