Re: [Minds-disaster] Fw: Status of Minds on the University Network

I guess this puts an end to our arguments over who should go to see the CC. Thank god.
I do however find this deeply worrying. If they won't even talk to us then I really think they need an attitude adjustment. Although I'd prefer for them to meet with us directly, look at the language used, and what is said, in the email. It seems rather positive.
I guess the only good side to this is that JK will be able to get us a very good deal but still it's not exactly the most curtious thing to do and certainly justifies and suppliments my already less than positive view on John O'Connel & the CC as a whole. Personally, I'm quite pleased with the email. Their "attitude" towards us seems to have improved since John Keating has talked to them about us. You'll notice the following sentences: "The University would like to see some service in place that would meet your needs" -- look at what is being said here. "I will work with John and support the establishment of a minds style server when I am convinced that the users of any such system will comply with the University Policy on Responsible Computing, The Code of Conduct for users of University Computing Facilities and the Heanet Acceptable Use Policy." -- and here too. They will *support* an establishment of the server when they are convinced that we'll follow the rules, rules we're supposed to follow anyway (and the two people who I know haven't have been dealt with accordingly - Darragh Sherwin (for ".kill.pl" and ".killer.pl") and David Bolger (for that stupid email thing) ).
All we need to do is to convince them we'll follow the rules... and with Phil and Cian also on the case I'm sure we can bar people from breaking the rules (or at least the major ones, and prevent the rest through education). I think the main thing they'd be worried about is something like this happening: http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/encyclopedia/encyc.cgi?heading=s&file=spike.encyc David Barrett
