Re: [Minds-disaster] A word!
I've kept out of this so far, because quite frankly it is a load of bollox.
However, there apparently is a ?monopoly? in existence. I wasn't aware of this.
I'm not going to debate that! There was and i know people who agree with me and thats all i have to say on that matter!
I didn't see you doing anything, but hey you were busy.
Yes i was! Who went to brian and explained why we wanted our elections next year? And then persuaded him why it was a good idea? Who talked to Noel about Minds? He tried to help us get back up and talk to the CC about us!
It was up to you. If you had actually said anything (and I'm not referring to this meeting), it would have been listened to.
Well ... at least i dont go around beating people over the heads with plastic axes! As to members, we do need suggestions. But i think that this should come after the meeting with the CC We need to know what is going to be happening with Minds before we can decide what to do about that! Will we be up and running or will we still be down! if we're down we have to focus more on events than networking naturally! So what events? Are we still giving out the disks and what is the final content of them? Are they even ready to be burned? Has Dave got access to the stuff? If not, do we want to spring for freebies and entice members that way? As for whether our existing machine will be back up, well that is in the hands of james cotter and stephen brown. James has yet to implement the firewall, which would give us our limited access. Myself and dave have offered to help, but he hasn't given us any access so far. He will be back from holidays this week (I think), I'll be in on friday, and I'll see if I can have a look at the setup. Presumably bart has filled you in on the new machine, just to be clear on it, we will have full access to it, from within and without the college. Bart also probably knows best when exactly it will be up and running also. I'm fascinated by this monopoly, and the mysterious way you refer to it. You still haven't told me what major decisions were made, I can't think of any. Dave will tell you about the minds cd, it is almost done. We need to make cardboard/paper sleeves for the cd's. As for the plastic axe, it was well deserved. ----- Original Message ----- From: <honeybear@cuddle.co.uk> To: <minds-disaster@redbrick.dcu.ie> Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 8:38 PM Subject: Re: [Minds-disaster] A word!

Phil,
As for whether our existing machine will be back up, well that is in the hands of james cotter and stephen brown.
It will be a while yet and the CC are still comming out with more obstacles which JK is having to knock down again and again ... we can now not have a mail server without what they consider to be adequate virus protection! But leave all this up to JK.
I'm fascinated by this monopoly, and the mysterious way you refer to it. You still haven't told me what major decisions were made, I can't think of any. Are you blind!!! I would not use the word monopoly though ... clique is more appropriate .... it's not that any MAJOR decisions haev been made but some people are completely ignored and left out of alll discussions (appart from this list). I agree with Bon on this one and so do a number of other
Dave will tell you about the minds cd, it is almost done. We need to make cardboard/paper sleeves for the cd's. Has the final content been decided on and approved by the committee? As for the sleaves if black & white is OK I guess I can run them off in
As for the plastic axe, it was well deserved. Phil, on this one I STRONGLY dissagree. Me & Gareth were trying to give constructive criticism to help put together the MOST IMPORTANT document a society has and you and Kev kept cutting us down both verbally and in
The biggest stumbling block is still the firewall and JK is useing some of his contacts in Industry to try get one sponsired but it will be a few weeks yet till anything happens. people. the research lab for yous. the end even physically (with the axe) and in fairness I really feel an appology to me and Gar is what was called for not a clubing! I've kept out of this so far, because quite frankly it is a load of bollox. However, there apparently is a ?monopoly? in existence. I wasn't aware of this. I'm not going to debate that! There was and i know people who agree with me and thats all i have to say on that matter! We're hardly going to come to a good solution with that.
I didn't see you doing anything, but hey you were busy. Yes i was! Who went to brian and explained why we wanted our elections next year? And then persuaded him why it was a good idea? Who talked to Noel about Minds? He tried to help us get back up and talk to the CC about us! I don't understand. You claim that there was a monopoly. You claim that all the important things were done by me (or Phil)... but you also claim to have done these things, which I *know* you did, which were very important.
It was up to you. If you had actually said anything (and I'm not referring to this meeting), it would have been listened to. Well ... at least i dont go around beating people over the heads with plastic axes! Actually, Siobhan did raise the point, on Minds, that she thought she had nothing to do and didn't like it. I explained that I didn't like giving out people work, that I was well capable of doing, that I was not prepared to do myself. I also explained that I didn't want to take her time away from Astro 2... a society in which she had more responsibility (as Chair/President). She then explained that she didn't mind, and really wanted to help out more. I then increased her involvement in the society, and stopped taking all the work on myself.
I therefore listened to her grievances and took measures to solve them.
As to members, we do need suggestions. But i think that this should come after the meeting with the CC We need to know what is going to be happening with Minds before we can decide what to do about that! If you've read the list, you will have seen what will be happening to the Minds machine around April (this time is a guess).
Will we be up and running or will we still be down! Probably up, but down if we don't discuss it with them... hence the meeting is VERY IMPORTANT.
if we're down we have to focus more on events than networking naturally! So what events? Please, can you suggest some? Kevin has suggested a sponsored parachute jump, paintball and Quazar.
Are we still giving out the disks and what is the final content of them? Yes. The content is listed on the Minds newsgroups, which we
Are they even ready to be burned? No, because I don't have the list, or access to a fast download connection.
Has Dave got access to the stuff? I don't have access to the list... I'm stuck in work. I need physical access to the machine to read the list that was decided upon.
That said, I have, from the list and ready to burn: WinAmp (latest full), DJGPP (all packages), Buzz 1.2Beta (music creation package), Ghostview + Ghostcript (latest, for Windows and Unix), Abuse 2 (game), Parsec Project (game, Windows and Linux), several game systems, all FreeBSD documentation (HTML , PuTTY and all related clients (including an SFTP [ftp over ssh] client), XMMS (for Unix), etc. I would also like to include: Apache 1.3.20 (Windows and Unix), PHP 4 (Windows and Unix), MySQL (Windows and Unix), PostgreSQL (Unix).. and perhaps some a graphical development environment for DJGPP (similar to Visual C++'s, I've seen a few). We might also be able to use the latest JDK.
If not, do we want to spring for freebies and entice members that way? A Freebie CD would be very good.
