We need a couple of people to take ownership of this and do it. Having written stuff by Committee before the most important lesson I learnt was not to write stuff by Committee. Someone has to be anchoring. They don't have to be providing any material themselves but they have to take responsibility for collating contributions and the like. So long as this person or persons pays attention to the views of the people on the subscription list and the current Committee we should be willing to go along. Remember, the book is ONE of the ideas for the tenth birthday celebrations, albeit possibly the most comprehensive one. Someone needs to start thinking about the function and what is planned, someone else might want to look into tracking down past members, especially Committee members, to let them know about it as many might not know. If I can make a suggestion we need a couple of working groups doing what is necessary on the various proposals: Book Function Fundraising (Auction of RB memorobilia at function?) etc. and bring these people together every month or couple of months because I assure you, the organisation of this whole thing is not going to be done over the email. One person needs to anchor each of those and people can tie into any or none of those groups and take on specific bits of work. In the interests of transparency all reports and notes and emails of those groups can be kept here so that future generations of archivists can wonder if so much organising was necessary. :) Unlike Doc, I think advertising could be useful in paying for it but I think we should be very targetted in our search for advertising to avoid doomed dotcom companies appearing and the ads should be more along the lines of: 'Sinn Fein wishes Redbrick a Happy Tenth Birthday and congratulates the members past and present on their accomplishments.' Or better yet, those clubs and socs who have their sites on our server, the SU, the SPC etc. And one last general point, perhaps unsurprisingly considering the nature of the society and the fact that most people on this list are tech people there hasn't been a lot of focus on the other stuff, both social events and the non-techy community and where are they now. Hiyas, What do you all think is the best way to get started on the Anniversary book? (1) Decide on a structure here, then farm off bits to people (while also accepting any random things that other people write in the meantime) or (2) Make a "call for submission", and set a first deadline on when stuff has to be in, and to be read/reviewed by people on the list. ? I think the "call for submission" thing, while formal, mightn't prompt as much action. Whereas if we provisionally assign people with bits of the book, we all might feel compelled to write stuff (and at the same time with this option, allow anyone who randomly writes something or comes up with an idea, for it to go in too). I don't know if we need an editor(s) at this stage; this list could probably do? Articles/Sections: - "Overview" section: a brief bit about what Redbrick does/provides atm. - "History" section: an overall history in straight readable form - "Generations" section: 2-page spread for each gen? In 'collage' style.. - "Encyclopedia" section: this could be quite bulky actually, hmm - "Yearbook" section: like magluby's photo site? Drusilla suggested this! - "Corporate" section: What redbrick members are doing in businesses - "Academic" section: What redbrick members are doing in academia - "Projects" section: What cool projects or things have been done Maybe I should phone up some book editors and check out costs (in case this yoke gets too big!), or phone UCD L&H or something :-) [ Please pick the structure apart, or add up stuff you think should also be in the book ] Kp -- Hello. Actually, I'd take a couple of copies of that for people I know called Karl. Look, this isn't rocket science here. Karl has put forward a suggestion for something to be included in the book. Paul, Doc and I think, and I so far have indicated they think it's a good idea. Dave is opposed to it. Fair enough. Now, if every decision on the book is going to be subject to a referendum of the membership we might as well close up shop now. I think singer has posted on the boards indicating people are working on such a book and asking them to contribute or suggest ideas. Hopefully material will come from that. In the meantime I think there is no harm on working away on Karl's idea. If Dave is opposed to it and perhaps wants to keep his name out of it then that is regrettable but obviously his choice. While he might not want Redbrick taking credit for his computing skills, arguably Redbrick would not want to take credit for his interpersonal skills as so amply demonstrated on this thread. So, lets push ahead with Karl's idea, continue through the boards and this group to get suggestions for items of inclusion and start allocating specific jobs of work to specific people otherwise we'll become a wee talking shop. Finally found this. Not sure if we can use it. But interesting reading anyway - many of you have probably not seen it, and I reckon it's ok to email it around at this stage. If we were going to use it, we'd have to ask Alan for permission, etc. (I imagine you could have an entire page or 2 pages with endorsements from CA staff if you wanted). What makes this even more admirable is that all these efforts are provided by Redbrick members, for other redbrick members, so there is a huge sharing and transfer of knowledge going on within redbrick. And to cap it all, as if that wasnt' enough, the redbrick society provide all these facilities and resources not just for students in CA, but for students across the campus. If the University wanted to try and emulate the facilities that Redbrick provies to such members we would not do so easily. I have had some dealings with the society as HEad of School in terms of providing rooms for courses etc., and have always found dealing with the soiety to be mature and respectful. I try to accede to reasonalbe requests from them for facilities, for resources, and even for equipments, and I would have no hesitation in supporting them wherever I can. In summary I am delighted to state that I believe that redbrick is a wonderful asset to the University, that we are very licky that it is as successful as it is, andd that I hope their present success will continue long into the future. I think we should aim for a high-profile event, with the book launched and the collage present. Also in attendance could be old servers, some sponsors, media types, people from companies who employ brickies, etc. I think that the current committee shouldn't waste an enormous amount of time on the parts of the event that cater for the alumni - the event should be used by the present committee to showcase the society and services as it is at present, and they should be given ample opportunity to do so.
