Hi all, just regarding the magazine, I know there are a few people working on it but I a) can't quite remember them all and b) don't know if anyone has written much, so could those who ARE involved speak now, and just say whether things have been written? Heya all, I've been on this list since before the summer and I've seen a lot of ideas come and go. Now I'm wondering, do we have a list of the ideas that are going to be followed through on? The magazine is one, I hope, any others? The other point I want to bring up is donations. As you all know, we are very eager to get lots of money scabbed from the associates (AND members, don't worry), and I'd like to extend the hand of begging to everyone on this list first. We're looking into getting a paypal account at the moment, but if that can't happen does anyone have any great ideas? Hello all, As you may or may not be aware, last night I unwittenly get myself involved with the committee this year as the new Events Officer. As you can all assume the 10th year birthday is now the most important date in my mind (its sad i know) so the 3rd of March it is. Already I have a meeting with a lovely lady from clontarf castle trying to pitch her hotel to me, i'll see what great deals I can get from her (it'll probably be like gettting blood from a stone but i'll fill you all in on the gorey details later) For those who havent been to Clontarf Castle before or for those who would like a quick reminder what room/place I am talking about here is a few pics http://www.thez0rekorp.com/private/v/clontarf/ >From now on, please email me all your ideas and suggestions for this event, I see there is somethings going on and if any support is needed for these to continue please let me know and i'll see what I can do.. Sorry if this has been raised, but only going through the archives now and haven't seen it.. Why have a book? If it's going to cost �X00 and involve a lot of wrangling, is there anything more worthy of that money, time, and effort? I'm just wondering.. people have jumped on the idea of the book without really anyone setting out a case for it? Like someone else said, maybe it could be a magazine or something smaller instead? Or maybe a website like RedbrickAt10.com (or something, I'm not some domain name thinking up guy :o)) since we have the space and so many talented web design people and the cost would be minimal to register the domain. Don't mean to throw cold water on the idea but just wanted to play devil's advocate especially when it's an idea that could so easily not work out that well (good intentions and all that) Peace, C -- Tum Ganesh nahiin ho! Hey up, In attendance: art_wolf, markpb, kpodesta. Summary: We had a nice chat for about an hour, mostly discussing possible ideas as opposed to coming up with a definate plan. But it's not up to us to make a plan & tell everyone how it is anyway (especially not without any committee members present!) - merely to talk out ideas and roughly agree on how we can progress them. Important: we should make sure we try and organise things together as best we can - without any poor people (cmte or associates) storming ahead with their own ideas, on their own time! "Book": - For the moment, everyone (list/offlist) should contribute to the wiki - An email alias could be added for lazy redbrick members to mail stories to - Revisit the content/wiki properly in perhaps 2 months time to guage content Event: - A few ideas exist; we could possibly vote on which would suit us all best - 1838 Club (DCU fancy dining room): could host meal, slideshow, collage/book - Year long programme of events: Redbrick could use birthday idea thru year - We should make sure committee don't take the entire burden! Collage: - Scan in any stuff (posters/tickets/photos), thumbnail it on web, so that people can create "digital" layouts for the collage, or a digital collage - Pick a day in a month or two's time in DCU: everyone brings in stuff, we do it all on the floor of The Hub Seminar Room (or something). Hey up, We suggested a meeting for tomorrow night (Tuesday 14th), but it clashes with a SAGE-IE talk! (http://www.sage-ie.org/meetings.html) Is it ok to postpone it until next Tuesday (21st)? If people still want to meet up to chat about it tomorrow that's cool. Just that myself/singer/others(?) won't be there unfortunately. In the meantime, John art_wolf had a good suggestion on the wiki, so I changed the page to stick "everything we've got" onto it. So that could be something to get us started - we can just all edit away on that for the moment! We need a couple of people to take ownership of this and do it. Having written stuff by Committee before the most important lesson I learnt was not to write stuff by Committee. Someone has to be anchoring. They don't have to be providing any material themselves but they have to take responsibility for collating contributions and the like. So long as this person or persons pays attention to the views of the people on the subscription list and the current Committee we should be willing to go along. Remember, the book is ONE of the ideas for the tenth birthday celebrations, albeit possibly the most comprehensive one. Someone needs to start thinking about the function and what is planned, someone else might want to look into tracking down past members, especially Committee members, to let them know about it as many might not know. If I can make a suggestion we need a couple of working groups doing what is necessary on the various proposals: Book Function Fundraising (Auction of RB memorobilia at function?) etc. and bring these people together every month or couple of months because I assure you, the organisation of this whole thing is not going to be done over the email. One person needs to anchor each of those and people can tie into any or none of those groups and take on specific bits of work. In the interests of transparency all reports and notes and emails of those groups can be kept here so that future generations of archivists can wonder if so much organising was necessary. :) Unlike Doc, I think advertising could be useful in paying for it but I think we should be very targetted in our search for advertising to avoid doomed dotcom companies appearing and the ads should be more along the lines of: 'Sinn Fein wishes Redbrick a Happy Tenth Birthday and congratulates the members past and present on their accomplishments.' Or better yet, those clubs and socs who have their sites on our server, the SU, the SPC etc. And one last general point, perhaps unsurprisingly considering the nature of the society and the fact that most people on this list are tech people there hasn't been a lot of focus on the other stuff, both social events and the non-techy community and where are they now. Hiyas, What do you all think is the best way to get started on the Anniversary book? (1) Decide on a structure here, then farm off bits to people (while also accepting any random things that other people write in the meantime) or (2) Make a "call for submission", and set a first deadline on when stuff has to be in, and to be read/reviewed by people on the list. ? I think the "call for submission" thing, while formal, mightn't prompt as much action. Whereas if we provisionally assign people with bits of the book, we all might feel compelled to write stuff (and at the same time with this option, allow anyone who randomly writes something or comes up with an idea, for it to go in too). I don't know if we need an editor(s) at this stage; this list could probably do? Articles/Sections: - "Overview" section: a brief bit about what Redbrick does/provides atm. - "History" section: an overall history in straight readable form - "Generations" section: 2-page spread for each gen? In 'collage' style.. - "Encyclopedia" section: this could be quite bulky actually, hmm - "Yearbook" section: like magluby's photo site? Drusilla suggested this! - "Corporate" section: What redbrick members are doing in businesses - "Academic" section: What redbrick members are doing in academia - "Projects" section: What cool projects or things have been done Maybe I should phone up some book editors and check out costs (in case this yoke gets too big!), or phone UCD L&H or something :-) [ Please pick the structure apart, or add up stuff you think should also be in the book ] Kp -- Hello. What makes this even more admirable is that all these efforts are provided by Redbrick members, for other redbrick members, so there is a huge sharing and transfer of knowledge going on within redbrick. And to cap it all, as if that wasnt' enough, the redbrick society provide all these facilities and resources not just for students in CA, but for students across the campus. If the University wanted to try and emulate the facilities that Redbrick provies to such members we would not do so easily. I have had some dealings with the society as HEad of School in terms of providing rooms for courses etc., and have always found dealing with the soiety to be mature and respectful. I try to accede to reasonalbe requests from them for facilities, for resources, and even for equipments, and I would have no hesitation in supporting them wherever I can. In summary I am delighted to state that I believe that redbrick is a wonderful asset to the University, that we are very licky that it is as successful as it is, andd that I hope their present success will continue long into the future.
