I guess the key question is: What do we want a "book" ?
What is it for? Who do we imagine reading it? Will it be a throw away book or something we want people to actually keep as a souvenir (ignoring the fact that at least a handful of brickies would probably keep paper napkins as souvenir if we wrote "Redbrick 10th Anniversary" on them ;o))? How much is Redbrick willing to spend on it (bearing in mind Rb will also want to put on events, hire bands, buy cake, etc.)?
Truely I see the book as many things - going over the Encyclopedia I found lots of cool and amusing bits of redbrick I didnt know before and I see the book as extending this. I also see it as a way to get alot of people envolved in the society, talking with people who say dont usually use chat or even as basic as checking out other user's sites. Who it would be for - heh difficult question though Id like to think that it would interest everyone to some degree or another. Looking at the stuff on the wiki this certainly seems to look promising! From a personally view point I'd fit into the category of reading it to laugh at the best heys, to read up on the history - especially the stumbles redbrick has had in the past ;) I'd like to think people will hang on to these - read it again or reference it sometimes. I'm in favour of a magazine format for the 'book'. DCU has several magazines coming out monthly so I believe applying to the SPC to produce one large magazine for our members, say even 300 as I cant see the whole membership going out to purchase a copy :) At the meeting today it was discussed the idea of having a site where submissions can be made and the idea that all articals and whatever can be made avaible on it - but the 'book' itself would include the best of everything. For instance the idea that a user can submit their hey log - all the heys can be made available and, as markpb suggested, have one of the best heys on the bottom of every page. Cost wise, as Bernard posted, can be nicly covered by sponsorship *crosses fingers* and I'd recommend the cmt ask for a hefty bit paid by the SPC :) This is a big enough part of the society this year and I'd hope they would support us in this. Also if the 'book' was to take a magazine format there are what 3 or 4 monthly..or whatever it is, magazines produced by socs in DCU so I assume we should be able to get a good enough price... Karl, the only with a good memory today, will mail about what we discussed later :)
Just a few ideas for people to discuss. Or not. :o)
my two euro and fifty cent ;) John
