(suddenly feels like I should have worn a suit to this..) As to who I am.. Helpdesk last year, Webgroup currently. Only 9th gen. In terms of qualifications - not many :) I'm afraid the only thing I can offer in terms of the editor team is being able to put a good amount of time into it ;)

Hey, Let's have a meeting. Next week's kinda busy for me, how about some evening the following week in one of Karl's nice coffee places that he's always going on about? Brian.
I'd like to volunteer to help also. I'm events officer on the committee next year, so I'll be co-ordinating the birthday celebrations along with the PRO(Jesjes). My experience with stuff like this to none, but I'll be more than happy to get my hands dirty when needed. Regards, Bernard
Hey, Basically, for this we need a max of 3 people. Anymore and it'll be a pain in the ass. A big old meeting wouldn't be a good idea, except to decide on those 2 or 3 people. Personally I nominate Karl to do it. :) I'll happily volunteer my services for the design of the book if needed, I'll leave the editing/collating stuff to someone else though. - Kevin On Fri, Jun 03, 2005 at 12:43:20PM +0100, dregin@redbrick.dcu.ie wrote:

I think a limit of 3 people is too constricting. Also, would having the team made up solely of associates not leave quite a bit of Redbrick's history out of the book? I think at least one open meeting should be had so that people will get to voice their opinions on the plans for the book. A small group of people are going to find it hard to cater to everyone's tastes, so I think an open meeting will at least give the team a better idea of what is wanted. Bernard

Sounds good to me - see my other mail about our meeting in town? (associate & member friendly, in a central post-work place!) Btw, we totally wouldn't let associates take this bad boy over. This is for everyone (and for everyone in the future). I like the meeting idea so that you cool committee people can see us "associates" aren't all wrinkles and anger. :-) Karl On Fri, Jun 03, 2005 at 03:37:29PM +0100, dregin@redbrick.dcu.ie wrote:

Well, having worked on many things, the more heads on the organising group the slower it takes ot get done. That doesn't mean that more people can't contribute, just that there's only 3 people max, acting as editors. Ideally, we'd have one editor, 1/2 sub editors who collate all the content and make the crucial decisions. Other people submitting articles etc... is cool though.
Also, would having the team made up solely of associates not leave quite a bit of Redbrick's history out of the book?
I agree - I'm not advocating that.

It doesn't matter whateveryone wants. What matters is getting something done, and done well. Looking for a consensus just wastes time - just look at the UN! A few smart people can figure that out, by asking people what they want. - Kevin
I'm not asking for concenus, just to give others a say. I didnt realise that the team would just be editing. It looked like the plan was to have them make all the contributions. I was wrong. proceed :-) On 6/3/05, Kevin <p@redbrick.dcu.ie> wrote:

I'll happily volunteer for setting up the technical side of the book, and LaTeX'ising things for people not familiar with LaTeX aswell as answering any questions and I might even write documentation and a guide. I've actually done this before, which saves a fair amount of effort. I nominate singer for the editorial thingy aswell btw. -- colmmacc@redbrick.dcu.ie PubKey: colmmacc+pgp@redbrick.dcu.ie Web: http://devnull.redbrick.dcu.ie/

Cool, everyone's so enthusiastic! Great stuff. For our meeting, how about: Date - Tuesday 14th Time - 6.30pm Venue - Bewleys, Grafton St. (It's open til 11pm, is central, should have space) I'd like to throw my own name in to help edit the book; for the record I'm a former chairperson & webmaster (also have sat on the SPC, helped form the Postgrad Soc, and have an "Uaneen" award), and I've also spent 2 years recently having written work continuously criticised by unpleasant academics, so should be able to contribute (in a much nicer way!) with "editorial" comments :-) We're all quite qualified on this list to make this thing a success though, so I'd say the best thing is for a few of us to share it - I guess we could work out the best thing when we meet up. I'll bring in old stuff I've got (that could inspire some ideas & content), and we'll have a good buzzy chat about it regardless. Kevin (p) mentioned before that maybe it doesn't have to be a "book", so much as a fancier booklet (in the style of a cool, easier-to-publish magazine maybe). I guess it would depend on how much content we have. Thought I'd float the idea again anyway to think about. If anyone has other suggestions for times/venues - if you feel like heying/mailing me with them, I can collate them all & let the list know (so as to circumvent many many emails to the list). As you say I'd say alot will come down to the amount of content that is finally included in the book. I like the idea of a magazine though :) John
