I still like the idea of a book. :)
There is a loose plan to have a big awards dinner (blacktie or not), at somewhere like the Guinness Storehouse, but Carolie (bootie) made a fine point that us redbrickers might be better off with just a fancy bar place (same venue?), and not a sit down meal.
I wouldn't want to have pat-on-the-back "best brickie" awards at the event - Just a few speakers, some cake, and lots of networking :) These can occur whether or not there's a meal. I think we should aim for a high-profile event, with the book launched and the collage present. Also in attendance could be old servers, some sponsors, media types, people from companies who employ brickies, etc. I think that the current committee shouldn't waste an enormous amount of time on the parts of the event that cater for the alumni - the event should be used by the present committee to showcase the society and services as it is at present, and they should be given ample opportunity to do so. The AGM will be at a similar time of year, this should be taken into consideration when planning the event.
My webpage is crappy - can we make a mailing list? (and then continue the discussion from there)
Bah, can't we use an AJAX-powered RSS-feed-available wiki? Oh, ok then... http://lists.redbrick.dcu.ie/mailman/listinfo/redbrick-birthday Brian. -- "Immigrants! I knew it was them! Even when it was the bears, I knew it was them."
Good man Brian! Well done on creating the list. Hast it been announced on the boards etc.? On the book: great idea indeed, sure let's give it a go. Regarding publishing (which might be the most important logistical thing we need to plan ahead for) - here's a few things to think about: - legitimate publishers - who? - how long would it take to publish? - how many copies do we need? - what timescale do they need from submission to produced book? - size of book - authors of articles - structure of book - design of book Any others, add away. I don't think he literally meant publish a book. More a booklet of sorts, right. Easy enought to get smething like that printed up, though not incredibly cheap. It is a big bit of effort though, we'd need to make sure the money & time is best spent on it. :) - Kevin
Does DCU have a journalist soc, or a media soc, or a book publishing soc? I'm guessing there would be several societies that we could rope into helping us - they get experience / practice / publicity / CV fodder, we get what amounts to professional design at cheap rates. It has better than that. It has a Societies and *publications* committee, the SPC :) RedBrick can put in a grant app specifically for a publication, indeed it's pretty likely to suceed if put the right way! Especially if its in cooperation with the two publication societies.

There's a few ways to approach this, we need to figure out what we want first: DCU get lots of stuff printed every year - they've got to have some good contacts. The SU, SPC and maybe whoever looks after printing for DCU should be harrassed. We should find some books similar to the style in which we want it published - maybe they're published in Ireland. It might be worth looking at that UCD Lit and Hist Soc. history book that was published recently. Maybe the book could be in the style of an O'Reilly book? Brian.

Here's the website for the UCD L&H 150 year celebtration: http://www.landh150.com/index.php Jeez, aren't we deadly that we're considering something (almost) as fancy as this for our -10- year celebration? We must be a pretty deadly society! Intruiging idea about the O'Reilly book! Although they've never been picture/photo friendly, so we could always do some sort of Hybrid if you wanted to go with that idea... A glossier picturyer thingy might be better. Kp, eloquent -- Hello.
