So It's week 12, That means the last week of college before exams. This year flew by.. Anyway == Coding Contest == The coding contest winners will be announced next Thursday. == Hoodie & Pints == Thursday, 29th of April, from 5pm we'll be in the Nubar. Welcome to week 11, == New Committee 2010/2011 == Congratulations to the new committee for next year. Lotta Mikkonen (Attol) Chair, Nina Hanzlikova (Geekity) Secretary, Emma Gallagher (Emma) Events, Carri Fuery (Carri) PRO, James Reilly (Fun) and Seamus Ronan (Train) Admins, Craig Mac Entee (Credak) Webmaster and Paul Bunbury (Bunbun) and Shane Stacey (isaac702) Helpdesk. == Positions available == There are still a few openings on the committee for next year. The two positions available are admin and treasurer. In order to be eligible for the admin position you must first pass a test. Past papers can be found at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/help/exams/ . If you'd like any more information email committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie == Constitutional amendments == The proposed constitutional amendment to reduce helpdesk from three people to two was passed by a majority show of hands == IRLCPC Winners! == Congratulations to Team Kenny who competed in the first intervarsity IRLCPC intervarsity programming competition and won first place. The team consisted of Paul Bunbury (bunbun), Kenny Tang (Astro) and Owen Corrigan (Toby). Team RB, Redbrick's second team, came in 4th place. 14 teams from colleges across the country competed. Congratulations to all the participants! Maybe next year we can take all four top spots! Hope everyone isn't too stressed out and if you need a break from studying/projects/assignments etc.. Welcome to week 10, == AGM == This Thursday the 15th of April at 7pm in CG04 we're having our AGM. Want to have your say on how Redbrick is run? Maybe you wanna run for committee? If so you should come to the AGM. There will be a session where we have number of short discussions about small topics, like what you need to know about security, LDAP, obscure linux settings 101 etc. If anyone has any ideas let us know, if you would like to stand up and talk to us about something you want to share and know really we you are more then welcome (depending on the subject matter, no hello kitty please). Amendment Of Constitution

Hi Everyone, A member has proposed the following. We would like to bring it up in the AGM on the 15th of April, at 7pm, in CG04. Austin Halpin, (Haus): I'd like to propose an amendment to the constitution, to reduce the number of Education Officers from 3 to 2 to be voted on next week. Basically because I don't feel that there's a big enough workload to warrant having 3 people on the team. "Notice of a proposal to seek an amendment to this constitution shall be given to members at least five days prior to the meeting at which such proposal shall be considered. Such a proposal must receive the approval of two thirds of the ordinary members present at such meeting." It's 7 days until the meeting, so I hope I've given you guys enough time to discuss this before you have to notify the rest of the membership. Hey Redbrickers, Welcome to week 8. Here's what's happening this week == Quiz == This Tuesday, the 30th of March, we're having our annual Table quiz in the Oldbar. The raffle prize is a Dell Mini netbook and prizes for the winning teams include portable hard drives. There will also be 2nd and 3rd prizes and also spot prizes on the night some include a free pint. Entry is €12 per team and it's in teams of 4. It will be legendary! Be there :) == Coding Contest == Just a reminder that entries for the coding contest is due today. Entries up till midnight will be accepted. Any entries submitted after this time will not be accepted. So if you haven't done already email: committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie with you're entry now before it's too late. Just a reminder about the prizes: For the easy contest the winner will get an external hard drive. For the advanced one the winner get a 22 inch LG HD monitor. In both contests 2nd prize is an 8gb usb stick and 3rd prize is free redbrick membership for next year. == Geek Meets == We'll continue our lil meet ups this Thursday, 1st Of April, at 6.30pm in LG26. again it's basically we're just gonna meet up, start up projects together and chat about techy stuff. Again there may be a few sweets and drinks thrown in too. So come along :D === Admins: Reinstalling Carbon === In order to facilitate Carbon's use by members as a development box it will be reinstalled with Ubuntu Lucid on Monday, this will enable us to provide members with more up to date software while still using the Ubuntu packaging repos. Going forward we hope to keep carbon up to date inline with ubuntu's 6 month release cycle. This work will cause several hours of downtime on Monday. That's all for now. Welcome to week 7, So here's what's happening this week. == Admin training == Unix fundamentals. Talk given by Cian Synnott (pooka) this Tuesday, 23rd of March, 7pm. LG26 (School of Computing). "UNIX fundamentals. The talk will be rooted (ho ho) in the idea that the OS needs to share computer resources between different programs and protect each from the others. I'll cover the id...eas of user and kernel space, the central abstraction of the process and its lifecycle, an aside on memory organization/management, and the file system. I won't just be talking easily-forgotten crap though; I'll be demonstrating everything using everyday UNIX tools like ps, ls, strace, etc." == Geek meets == This Thursday, 25th March, we're gonna have our first geek meet up. Basically we're just gonna meet up, start up projects together and chat about techy stuff. There may be a few sweets and drinks thrown in too.
