Hey Welcome to week 8, == Pooka Python Talk == Tomorrow Monday the 16th Nov, at 7pm in LG26 Cian Synnott (pooka) will be giving a short introduction to the increasingly popular Python programming language. It's easy-to-learn but powerful, runs practically everywhere, and has a large and useful standard library. The talk is aimed at smart brickies who are new(ish) to programming. People more familiar with programming might find it a little slow but hopefully there'll be notes of interest along the way. So come along and check it out. == Qzar and Bowling trip == On Tuesday, 24th Nov, We will be going to Qzar and Bowling. We will be meeting outside Spar at 6pm. This trip will only cost you €4 for both bowling and Qzar. Hello everyone. Welcome to week 7! ==New Admin== Congratulations to Andrew Martin (Werdz) who was elected as our new admin! ==Clubs and Socs Ball== We have six tickets available for the Clubs and Socs Ball. It will be held in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Santry. The evening consists of a four course dinner and entertainment. The dress code is formal. Tickets are €45 each. Please be prepared to pay by 2pm on Wednesday 11th November or your ticket will be reallocated. It will be held by our guest speaker Cian Synnott (Pooka) on Monday 16th November at 7pm in LG25 Why learn Python? It is a very versatile programming language that will tackle almost any problem. It is portable so whether you want your code to run on a Windows, Mac or Linux machine (or even your phone) that will not be an issue. Thanks to its clear, easy to understand syntax it can be learned quickly, even by beginners. A few examples of who uses Python: Google, Industrial Light & Magic (the visual effects company that created Star Wars), YouTube. ==Hoodies== A reminder that we are looking for a new hoodie design. The contest ends on Tuesday the 10th of November at 3pm. If you would like to enter your design this is your last chance to do so. Hey again, Here is an update on what's happening with Redbrick this week: == EGM == This is the last reminder about our EGM at 2.30pm this Wednesday, 4th of November, in T101. It's to elect our new admin. So come along. We will be heading to Eddie Rocket's in the Omni to celebrate afterwards. Free fries with every burger, == Hoodie Competition == The hoodie competition has been extended till next Tuesday, the 10th of November. So you still have loads of time to get your designs into us. If you would like to submit a design please email it to committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie == Halloween Ball == Our Halloween Ball is this Thursday, 5th of November, in the Vaults (just under Connolly Station. www.thevaults.ie for more info on the venue). Drinks will be buy one get one free :) Entry is free and the first 10 associates to come will get a free drink. Like I said before it's just another excuse to wear your Halloween outfits again. Hey Everyone, It's coming up to Halloween :D Everyone excited?? I know I am :D == InstallFeast == So on the 27th of October, this tuesday, in LG25 at 5pm the famous installfeast is on. Basically you bring your laptops, we'll help you install Linux on them and you get free Pizza :D You don't even have to bring your laptop. You can just come, watch and get pizza. So come along :D == Ubuntu dinner == If anyone is not really doing anything for Halloween on the 31st of October there's a dinner, followed by drinks to celebrate the release of Karmic Koala. EGM || Tutorial || Hoodie Competition || Usernames

Hi everyone, I'm back again. Here to tell you what's happening for week four: == EGM == So we're having another EGM on Wednesday the 4th of November, at 2.30pm in T101. This is to elect a new Admin for our committee. There's an Admin test on this Tuesday at 7pm. You must sit and pass this test to be eligible to run for admin position. == Tutorial == We're running a helpdesk workshop on how to use various aspects of our system, including how to program on redbrick and screen. Screen is more commonly known as "the thing that lets you stay logged into chat". It's a bit tricky to get the hang of at first and it can alot more than just that so come along and we'll show you how it's done. We'll also show you how to avail of the programming services we have on redbrick which is far easier than having to install the language libraries on your own machine. We'll be heading over to the bar after that (should be finished up ~6pm) for a few pints (yeay alcohol :D) So even if you don't come to the tutorial do come along to the bar for a chat and a free pint**! == Hoodie Competition == So like I said before there's going to be a hoodie competition. I told you's I'd tell you more about it when I knew more. Well what do you know I know more now and here it is :) Hoodie design contest: So basically you can use the current logo if you want or create your own. Deadline: 2 weeks. Prize : A free hoodie, with your logo. How awesome will that be :)? == Usernames == Ever wonder why somepne pick there username? Why did you choose your username? Admin Resignation || Second EGM

Hello everyone, Apologies for yet another announce email. We regret to inform you that David (Coconut) has decided to resign from his position as admin. This means that we will be holding another EGM on Wednesday 4th of November. Full details will be announced soon. If you would like to run for this position you must pass an admin test. If you wish to sit this test please email admins(a)redbrick.dcu.ie by Friday. The job description taken from our constitution : " The System Administrators shall be held ultimately responsible for the administration, security, and maintenance of the society's computer systems. They shall be responsible for the notification of the committee in regard to any breaches of the rules and regulations of the system. They are hereby authorised to take any administrative action necessary to discharge their duties, so long as such actions are constitutional. Such actions are open to review by the committee.
